Some people buy an iPad to step up to a screen size larger than their iPod touch. But consider the 1.2 pound Joybee GP2 Ultra Portable Mini Projector from BenQ. With its battery detached, it weighs less than an iPad or iPad 2, yet the image projected from a docked iPod or iPhone dwarfs anything shown on a tablet.
As an ultra-portable mini, the Joybee GP2 isn’t much larger than a pico projector, but with 200 Lumens, it is capable of pumping out 10 times the brightness of most picos. Moreover, it has 4 watts of integrated audio power, which means you’ll hear more oomph than the sound coming from most of the pico-class members. You could even use the GP2 as a simple speaker dock. As a projector, the GP2 is high-def ready with 720p resolution. Compare that to most pico projectors, which top out at standard definition/VGA or WVGA resolution.
While pico projection is built around one LED lamp, the Joybee GP2 incorporates three. The GP2 is illuminated by BenQ’s 3LED projection technology and a Texas Instruments DLP micro-mirror system. According to the company, utilizing red, green and blue LEDs as the light source enables the GP2 to project crisp picture quality with optimized brightness, contrast and color. Like other LED-based projectors, the life expectancy of the 3LEDs (rated for 20,000 to 30,000 hours) is equal to the life of the projector. Over the same period with a conventional projector, you’d have to replace the lamp multiple times.
With a 1.13 meter short-throw ratio, the projector needs to be only about 3 1/2 feet away from the wall to create a 44-inch diagonal picture. If the projector is perched at an angle, an auto keystone adjustment helps turn misshapen images, graphics and charts into pleasing squares.
The projector contains a USB input for playing content directly from a connected device, including a camera, flash drive or computer. There’s also an SD card slot. Plus, you can copy your media directly into the projector’s 2GB internal (1.3GB usable) memory. The Joybee has the intelligence to play most popular formats from entertainment to business documents. (See spec chart for compatible file types.) There’s an included wireless remote as an alternative to using the touch-sensitive controls atop the projector.
Beyond the 30-pin dock connector for attaching an iPod or iPhone, there are also an HDMI mini, VGA, composite video and stereo inputs as well was audio in/out mini jacks. The Joybee GP2 Ultra Portable Mini Projector comes with a 30-pin multi-input cable, AC Adapter, Quick Start Guide, User Manual CD, Carrying Bag and a remote control with battery.
