New WD TV Play Media Player

WD, a Western Digital company, has just announced their new WD TV Play media player. The WD TV Play provides access to movies, TV shows and music from entertainment apps including Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, Pandora, Spotify and more. It uses the latest wireless-N technology for fast streaming and no PC is required. You can also use it to access home videos, music and photos from your PC or Mac media library, USB drive, network drive or other DLNA/UPnP device. It supports most popular file formats and you can even use it to connect a camera or camcorder to your TV.

The WD TV Play connects to your TV’s HDMI or composite AV input, which makes it compatible with almost any TV. If you have a Wi-Fi home network, the WD TV Play can wirelessly stream content from anywhere in the house. However, the media player also features an Ethernet jack for completing a wired network connection. The WD TV Play supports Full HD 1080p video output via HDMI. There’s also a digital SPDIF optical audio output for sending surround sound from the media player to your AV receiver and home theater speakers.

The WD TV Play is also great for social networking. You can access online services such as Facebook, Twitter, Picasa Web Albums and more. You can also follow your favorite bloggers and stream the latest audio and video with up-to-the-minute RSS feeds. Plus, the device features an on-screen keyboard that makes searching for content, typing and updating profiles fast and easy. If you prefer a more traditional typing experience, you can also connect a wired or wireless USB keyboard using the USB 2.0 port.

The WD TV Play offers a handful of convenience features as well. One of these is Automatic Play, which allows you to select your favorite apps to automatically play when the unit is turned on. You can also customize your home screen with just the apps you want. And the intuitive user interface supports multiple languages for compatibility with a wide audience.

The WD TV Play also includes an easy-to-use remote control that’s equipped with preprogrammed buttons for one-touch access to your favorite apps. You can use your Android or iOS mobile device as a remote as well. All that’s required is the free WD TV Remote app. The versatile media player even comes pre-installed with games including Rockswap, Sudoku and Texas Hold'Em.

The compact design of the WD TV Play is worth mentioning as well. It’s smaller than many other media players and it can fit almost anywhere in your entertainment center.
