Nikon Announces New Super Telephoto and Wide-Angle Zoom Lenses
Nikon has just announced two new models they've added to their expansive line-up of NIKKOR lenses: a super-telephoto 800mm f/5.6 and a wide-angle zoom 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5. These lenses incorporate advanced optical constructions, including aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements, to help provide the greatest image sharpness with minimal distortions and aberrations, while SWM (Silent Wave Motor) autofocus motors and manual override systems give you precise control over the focusing abilities.
AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR
The new AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR lens is the longest lens currently available from Nikon, and is also the longest autofocus lens ever produced by Nikon. This lens provides a very narrow 3°10’ angle of view when used with an FX sensor, or an even narrower 2° when used with a DX-sensor (equating to a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 1200mm). This super telephoto length is ideal for wildlife, nature and sports photography, especially in regard to isolating subject matter, due in part to the f/5.6 maximum aperture.
An electromagnetic aperture mechanism is built into the lens for stable exposure control that is especially useful when working with high continuous shooting rates. Also benefitting these fast-paced shooting styles, built-in Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the effects of camera shake by up to four shutter-speed stops. The integration of two fluorite lens elements helps to reduce the overall weight of the lens while also offering chromatic aberration-reducing abilities. Two ED (extra-low dispersion) elements are also incorporated into the design, and work to further reduce the appearance of chromatic aberrations while also aiding in providing high overall image sharpness and color fidelity. A Nano Crystal Coat is applied to lens elements to reduce surface and internal reflections and ghosting for a greater transmission of light and higher image contrast. The lens barrel features magnesium-alloy construction, which gives overall rigidity and durability to the lens to ideally suit its use outdoors in fast-paced conditions.
Additionally, the AF-S Teleconverter TC800-1.25E ED is included with the 800mm f/5.6 lens to increase the effective focal length of the lens by 1.25x, to an impressive 1000mm f/7.1. This teleconverter is the first made by Nikon to incorporate an ED element into its construction to maintain the high optical and rendering performance of the lens itself. The electromagnetic aperture control is fully supported when the teleconverter is in use, contributing to the overall dependability of this lens.
AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED
On the other end of the spectrum, the new AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G ED lens is a wide-angle zoom lens that is compatible with FX-format sensors and offers magnification up to1.9x. This lens incorporates three aspherical elements and two ED elements into its design, to offer a reduction in chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range, while also providing high image sharpness and color fidelity. The SWM mechanism provides quiet, precise autofocus operation that suits HD video recording as well as photographing fast-paced subject matter. Beside fast autofocus performance, manual override is also available for instant switching to manual focus for fine-tuning of focus or for more creative focus placement. This lens’s optical attributes are further enhanced by its lightweight construction, weighing just 13.6 oz, making it an ideal lens for traveling and everyday shooting situations.
