Announcing the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4G ED VR

Nikon has just announced the new AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/4 ED VR telephoto zoom lens for their Nikon F bayonet mount. This lens is compatible with both FX and DX formats, but provides an equivalent 105-300mm focal length when used with DX sensors. Aside from the long reach of the lens itself, a constant maximum aperture of f/4 throughout the zoom range and an improved Vibration Reduction system enable low-light, fast shooting even at the 200mm end.

The f/4 maximum aperture also enables lighter weight, compared to an f/2.8 or wider maximum aperture optic, making this lens ideal for traveling and fast moving outdoor photography. The constant aperture also greatly benefits HDSLR applications, allowing you to maintain the widest possible f/-stop while zooming during video recording. An internal focusing mechanism helps to maintain a constant overall length of the lens when zooming and focusing, which also benefits overall usability and enables closer focusing distances. A Silent Wave Motor (SWM) benefits HD applications as well, by providing smooth, fast and quiet focusing that can instantly switch over to manual-focus operation by simply manually rotating the focus ring. Its Vibration Reduction system has been improved and now affords an equivalent five stops of image stabilization that also adds to the speed afforded by its mechanical design. This enhanced stabilization, coupled with an overall weight of 30 ounces and seven-inch length, creates an ideal balance between portability and handheld usage.

In regard to optical performance, this 70-200mm lens features Nikon’s Nano Crystal Coat that reduces lens flare and ghosting, resulting in a clearer, sharper image in various lighting situations. Three extra-low dispersion (ED) elements also contribute to overall sharpness and afford a noticeable reduction in chromatic aberration and distortion throughout the focal range. For close-up photography, this lens provides a minimum focus distance of one meter and a magnification ratio of 1:1.36 for near-macro photography at a respectable distance from your subject.

This lens is a lighter-weight alternative to other 70-200mm telephoto zoom lenses, while still maintaining the high image quality NIKKOR lenses provide. Its constant aperture and Silent Wave Motor greatly enhance video capabilities, while its general functionality, in regard to size and performance, benefit all photographers—especially those working outdoors and while traveling.
