Fast and Wide: Nikon’s AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G Lens

Share

Filling a void in Nikon’s current autofocus FX-format lens lineup, the AF-S NIKKOR 28mm f/1.8G is a general wide-angle lens with a fast maximum aperture. This fixed prime lens is ideal for almost any situation, providing a 75° angle of view (on full-frame sensors) that isn’t too wide or too narrow for most applications. It is also capable of close focusing up to 9.8".  This lens has been specifically designed and engineered for Nikon’s FX-format DSLRs, utilizing an optical formula for enhancing the sharpness and contrast of images. However, this lens can also be used as a 42mm equivalent focal length lens on DX-format cameras.

The lens is composed of 11 glass elements in 9 groups and contains aspheric lens elements to help minimize coma and other types of lens aberrations. A Nano Crystal Coat is employed on glass surfaces to reduce ghosting and flare within the lens, promoting greater color fidelity, contrast and image clarity. In addition to the Nano coating, a Nikon Super Integrated Coating has also been applied for further increasing light transmission, color consistency and reducing flare. There is a rounded 7-blade diaphragm for aesthetic bokeh and natural rendering of out-of-focus areas.

In terms of physical construction, the Nikon Silent Wave Motor has been incorporated into the lens for quick, quiet and precise focusing. These qualities make this lens ideal for use in movie recording, where the sound of the lens tends to be further amplified in the recording. Aiding the speed and smoothness of autofocus, it’s the rear element of the lens that moves, as opposed to the front elements. This lessens distortions when changing focus and keeps all moving parts better protected.

In terms of a general use wide angle lens, this lens is perfectly suited and will surely meet the demands of almost any situation. Its ideal wide focal length is coupled with speed and precision for superior results with regard to sharpness, color fidelity and overall image quality.
