Lumix DMC-GX7: The New Panasonic Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera
Panasonic has announced their latest Micro Four Thirds format interchangeable lens mirrorless camera, the Lumix DMC-GX7. The GX7 is the follow-up model to the popular DMC-GX1, which was released in early 2012. The GX7 arrives with several notable upgrades and adjustments as well as the already strong features that will be familiar to any GX1 user.
The GX7 provides a 16MP Digital Live MOS sensor that offers high-sensitivity still images. It works together with the Venus Engine image processor to reduce noise even at its maximum ISO of 25600, which is an improvement from the 12800 maximum of its predecessor. The sensor/processor combination also provides Full HD 1080/60p video recording in both the AVCHD and MP4 formats. The Contrast AF focus system on the GX7 is particularly accurate, especially when working with wide-open apertures and the Lumix Light Speed AF system clearly captures fast-moving subjects while Low Light AF is effective in dark situations, even without an AF assist lamp.
The GX7 is easy to operate and provides high-resolution imaging. Its features, especially those that mark its difference from the GX1, enable a user-friendly experience with better access to controls, versatile functionality, and wireless connectivity. First, the GX7 offers an integrated Live View Finder, which is housed on the left-hand side of the top plate and provides clear composition with field sequential color accuracy. With 2,764k-dot resolution and approximately 100% color reproduction, the image you see in the viewfinder is accurate to the scene, no matter the conditions in which you are shooting. The LVF offers Eye Sensor AF which starts autofocusing when your eye touches the finder and tilts upward 90°, which offers flexibility when shooting and a great way to glance down and take discreet waist-level shots. Also housed on the camera’s top plate are a built-in pop-up flash and a hot-shoe mount for an external flash or other accessories.
In addition to the Live View Finder, a touch-enabled 3.0” tilting LCD screen with 1,040k-dot resolution and 100% field of view is available for composition and image playback. With its improved front panel that eliminates the internal air layer and 80°-down and 45°-up tilt capability, the LCD is also effective in bright-light situations and its touch-control features offer intuitive navigation through the camera's features and controls, including touch focus and touch shutter release.
The flexibility of the GX7 includes the ability to switch seamlessly between photo and video modes with just a touch of a dedicated button. Video features have expanded to offer 60 fps capture for smooth, high-quality video and 24 fps capture for a cinema-like feel with full-time autofocus and tracking autofocus to keep moving subjects always in focus. P/A/S/M manual control modes are also present when shooting video for heightened image control and a built-in stereo microphone provides quality audio.
The GX7 also brings with it in-camera image stabilization. It allows you to use lenses without image stabilization control and still get the benefits of shake compensation for clear imaging in low light or when shooting with long focal length lenses. The GX7 will still support image stabilization from the full lineup of O.I.S.-equipped Lumix lenses; however, having in-camera stabilization opens up the potential to use an adapter and shoot with lenses from almost any manufacturer and still benefit from image stabilization and blur-free photography. When shooting with dedicated Lumix DSLM lenses, you can take advantage of the GX7’s high-speed contrast AF and its fast maximum shutter speed of 1/8000 per second.
The GX7 incorporates focus peaking and other functions to assist in achieving accurate manual focus while in live view. With focus peaking, all elements within your composition that are in focus will be highlighted based on defined edges of contrast. In addition, Pin-Point AF allows you to magnify your live view image from 3x to 10x for a clearer view of your subject and One-Shot AF sets a rough autofocus on the subject and then enables you to go to manual focus to find precise final focus.
For instant sharing and backing up of your images, Panasonic has enabled the GX7 with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. By downloading the Panasonic Image App, you can not only transfer images wirelessly to your smartphone or tablet but you can use your device as a remote control for the camera; controlling zoom, focus, and even the shutter release. The Wi-Fi setup is easy, thanks to NFC (Near Field Communication), which connects camera to phone simply by placing them beside one another.
The GX7 is a camera with advanced features but is still very user friendly and provides assistive features such as iAuto and Face Recognition. It also offers Creative Control with an increased number of filter effects. With 22 effects, each adjustable within its parameters, you can add numerous creative touches to your images such as Retro Effect, Toy Effect or High Key. Many of these filter effects are also applicable in Creative Panorama, in which you can simply add the effects to panoramic images. Silent Mode is a welcome feature that switches the shutter from mechanical to electronic, and turns off all sounds and the focus lamp for shooting situations where you need to be totally discreet. A multi-exposure function as well as time lapse video and a stop-animation function add to your creative palette.
One of the biggest draws of the GX1 was its slightly retro, dial-heavy physical design, and this style has carried over to the GX7. In fact, the GX7 has located more of its control dials on the camera’s top plate for improved access to auto and manual controls.
As befits a camera that is designed for fast access and day-to-day use, the GX7’s magnesium-alloy, die-cast frame is durable, with an ample rubberized handgrip and a handsome brushed-chrome top plate. The GX7 is presently available as a body only or as a kit with an included 14-42mm G Vario lens with MEGA Optical Image Stabilization and the 35mm focal length equivalent of 28-84mm.
