The New Panasonic TY-CC20W Skype Camera for Viera HDTVs

Share

If you use Skype for real time video chatting (or if you’re curious and want to try it out), and you have an Internet-connected Panasonic Viera HDTV, there’s a new product that brings these two high-tech marvels together. The new Panasonic TY-CC20W Skype camera is designed to integrate with Viera HDTVs, and it manages to be more compact, better looking and capable of producing a higher-quality image than its previous generation.

Installation is as simple as plugging it into a high-speed USB 2.0 port on your Viera HDTV, affixing it magnetically to the top of your set, and logging into your Skype account. An integrated hinge allows you to fine-tune the angle of the camera and four unidirectional microphones work together to deliver clear sound to the people with whom you’re communicating. The previous generation of this camera was only capable of recording 22 frames per second in HD, but the new TY-CC20W is capable of 30. The lens has also been upgraded to provide better picture quality.

The new TY-CC20W has a more refined, sleek look, which will blend in better with your entertainment system. It’s nearly half as tall as before, and a good bit narrower. The styling and integration are seamless with Viera HDTVs, and it will look like this camera came from the factory installed on top of your TV.

Why hunch over a cumbersome laptop when you need to communicate with business associates, friends and loved ones? Share an excellent looking and great sounding version of yourself, while bringing an almost life-sized moving image of them live on your Viera HDTV, with the new Panasonic TY-CC20W Skype camera.

I purchased the TC-P55ST30 tv last week.  This week I ordered the TY-CC20W skype camera.  According to amazon's website (PDF), this newer 2012 model is compatiable with 2011 Viera Connect HDTV's.  I connect the camera and it does not recognize it.  Please advise.

Everywhere I've read, it's supposed to work.

Thanks,
Brandon

Is the ST30 capable of Skype after all?

Update by Panasonic in June 2012 to work with 2010 - 2011 TV's

Updated today  11 June 2012 on 2011 TV, working now  :)

Do you know if the camera TY-CC20W works with the Panasocic TV TXLF37E30.
Thanks

Hello Amjid -

This Skype camera will work with 2011 and 2012 VIERA Connect enabled TVs. 2011 TV models may require a firmware update for the camera to work: http://bit.ly/NkJy3k

Your TV is a 2011 UK model that may not be supported by this Panasonic USA accessory.

Panasonic USA may be contacted via telephone:  1-800-211-PANA.or via e-mail: http://bit.ly/JpqvCN

Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions:  AskBH@BandH.com

Do you mean the camera (TY-CC20W) has been updated to work with 2010-2011 TV's, or is there a firmware upgrade for the TV's to work with the camera?

Hello -

This new  Panasonic Skype camera was redesigned for Panasonic's new 2012 television products.  At this point there seems to be no backward compatability with the 2011 models.  But there is a solution: The Logitech HD 720p TV Cam for Skype will experience plug-and-play simplicity. Once you log onto your Skype HD account, you’ll be able to start video calling.  See our B&H In Depth article for details.

Mark S at B&H Photo,

What Skype cameras are compatible with a Panasonic DMP-DBT215 Blu-Ray player?

(Television is Panasonic TH-42PZ77U, but I think that is irrelevant if going through the Blu-Ray player)

TY-CC10W? TY-CC20W? Other Panasonic cameras? Any Non-Panasonic?

Thank you,

Ham

Hello Ham -

The SKYPE feature can be accessed only with Panasonic's TY-CC10W Webcam which is now discontinued.   However, It is my understanding that Panasonic has recently certified this camera to work as well:

Panasonic FreeTalk Conference HD Camera Talk 7181

Panasonic may be contacted via telephone:  1-800-211-PANA.

Will Skype camera TY-CC20W ever work with Plasma TV TXP42VT30E if a new software for this TV is installed?

Hello  -

There is no indication at this point in time that the TY-CC20W will be compatible with the Panasonic Europe model TXP42VT30E. Panasonic may be able to furnish  more details:  1-800-211-PANA  or via e-mail: http://bit.ly/JpqvCN

I buy camera PANASONIC TY-CC20W (SKYPE camera), but do not work with Panasonic TV tx-p42g30e.

Hello Rastislav -

At this time there is no indication that the TY-CC20W will be compatible with the Panasonic Europe model TXP42VT30E. As far as I can determine, this camera is for specific USA models only.  Panasonic may be able to furnish more details:  1-800-211-PANA  or via e-mail: http://bit.ly/JpqvCN

I would like to use this camera (TY-CC20W) with a new Panasonic TC - P65VT50. I have the TV connected to my home theater receiver for sound, and have the internal speakers in the television disabled. My default sources are either a Tivo or a PS3 DVD player, both connected via HDMI to the receiver. Is there a way to have this camera work for Skype through the television and have the sound come out through the receiver to the speakers?

Thanks.

Hi, does this camera work with the panasonic freeview+ HD boxes?

Is this compatible with TC-P55VT30?

Is this camera compatible with the P42V20V series in the Philippines?

We are buying this camera for our new Viera TV. I cannot find any specification as to the camera's angle of view. We're setting up in a 12' x 18' conference room with a long conference table.

Would the TV and camera be better set up on the 12' wall looking down the 10' table in the 18'-long room? The nearest person would be about 4' from the camera, and the furthest person at the far end would be 14' away, and each row of persons along the sides of the table would be about 5' from each other.
or . . .
on the 18' wall looking at the broad side of the table. The table is 10' long. The nearest person would be about 4' from the camera, the furthest person about 9' directly across from the camera. If participants were at each end of the table, they'd be separated by about 13' and would be about 6' out from the wall.

I bought this camera to work with the Panasonic BDT220 Skype-enabled Blu-Ray player, but it causes a significant echo on the other person's line. We troubleshooted it by keeping the volume low, moving the camera away from the speakers, switching all but one speaker off, changing the output to Mono, etc. but the echo still persists, frustrating anyone we call with it.

Be aware that both Panasonic and Skype have very limited customer service (Skype has a questionable "chat service" and the Panasonic reps were completely confused by our problem). In the end both parties just pointed fingers at each other and the issue was never solved.

This was a good idea, but the product just doesn't work as advertised.

Bought A Panasonic TYcc20w for our Panasonic TC-P55ST50. Have TV & BluRay set up through a receiver with ceiling speakers.
Cannot get Skype audio/video test to work - no volume and video is very dark. What are we doing wrong?

Hello Jerome -

The new  Panasonic TY-CC20W Skype Camera is not compatible with your PanasonicTC-P50G25.  However, this older and now discontinued camera is compatible with your TV:

Panasonic Skype Enabled Communication Camera (TY-CC10W).  Panasonic's TY-CC10W Webcam is special as it not only plays nice with computers, but works on VIERA TVs as well, letting you communicate via Skype over a Panasonic VIERA TV if you happen to own one. Connecting to your VIERA plasma panel via USB, this compact unit sends and receives HD 1280 x 720 video and captures your voice clearly with four unidirectional microphones.

This camera from Logitech is alsocompatible but it also discontinued:  Logitech HD 720p TV Cam for Skype (Mfr# 960-000683)

Panasonic still offer this one however:

Panasonic FreeTalk Conference HD Camera Talk 7181

Panasonic may be contacted via telephone:  1-800-211-PANA.

Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions:  AskBH@BandH.com

Hi Kris:

The Panasonic FreeTalk Conference HD Camera Talk 7181 should work with your Panasonic Viera TH-P42V20 (Australia/New Zealand model).  It is not supported by the TY-CC20W.

Panasonic may be contacted via telephone: 1-800-211-PANA.

I have a p50st50 and cannot get the video to work when making a video call. I can see the camera work when I adjust the settings, but not when I do a test call or actual call. The audio works great and I can see the video of the person I am speaking. They can only hear me and see my profile image, which I took with the camera. I've spent 40 minutes with Panasonic and they could not assist in the end. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Will the TY-CC20W work with my Blue Ray player DMPBDT110 and or my TV TH50PX60U. If it will with either of them or just one of them will I need a firmware update?

Hello JB -

The TY-CC20W is not compatible with your professional plasma monitor. The DMPBDT110 is not Skype compatible either.  The DMP-BDT220 is rated by Panasonic to be compatible with this camera.

I set up a TY-CC20W Skype camera on my Vieta HD TV & it worked very well. I then connected a Yamaha YAS-101 Sound Bar & found that the audio in from callers & test service dropped right off (I had the TV sound down to 0 because the sound bar was to pick up the audio from the TV). The dial out sound (ringing volume)when I call someone (or Test service) is as per usual & sound in from other activities in Vieta such as UTube are all normal, it is only the incoming Skype volume that is down (My voice out is normal as is video out & video reception in. I went to settings on Skype but could not see anyway that I could alter audio settings. I disconnected the audio optical cable to the YAS-101 from the TV & turned up TV volume & all worked OK, on reconnecting audio optical cable same problem occurred. It obviously defeats the purpose of having the Skype camera if I have to disconnect the sound bar each time I make or receive a call in order to hear the other party. Any suggestions?

Cheers Tim Ryan

Hello Tim -

This issue does not seem to have any  relation to the camera reviewed above. Your TV may have a separate audio level menu devoted to the digital optical output.  Make sure that your TV volume is set to the minimum and the built-in speakers of the TV are set to "OFF" (if applicable).  There is also the small possibility that this Skype camera application will only route the audio of the TV's internal speakers. You will need to check if this is so with Panasonic directly: 1-800-211-PANA.

Please contact us via e-mail if you have additional questions:  AskBH@BandH.com

Tim - thanks for the post. I have the same problem and now know how to fix it. I also notice that the Skype service is temporarily unavailable 2 of the 3 times I have tried to log in. One last thing, the program doesn't always remember my password. Other than that, its great.

I have connected this Skype camera to my panasonic smart TV model number TX-L42ET5B.

It works fine when making skype calls, the sound and video are first class, however, when I try to setup the zoom and angle in setupmode all I get is a black box instead of an image from the camera looking into my lounge.

Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated.

Gaz

I have just purchased a TY-CC20W camera for use on my Panasonic Viera TC-L37E5 (2012 model). The camera advertising says it will work on a 2012 Viera. Connected the camera to USB#2. Turned on the TV, pressed Viera Tools and Viera Link and got a message that I can attached a compatible accessory. So, it does not seems to recognize that the camera is connected. Repeated the process and same result. Checked to see if I have the latest update for the TV and I have.

What have I missed? What am I doing wrong?

The Instruction manual says `display the Viera Connect. I don`t seem to be able to do that on this TV.

Hello. I have a panasonic viera tv model TC-L42E5L-1. I bought a camera TY-CC20W. Sometimes the screen stays black and disable and re-enable the camera is working properly again. Is this normal to happen? Thanks for the information you can give.

Hello, I live in Australia and have a TH-P54V20A and was wondering if the TY-CC20W is compatible with my TV? I have recently purchased a Belkin Wireless adapter for the TV and wish to get a camera so I can use skype, this seems to be the only Panasonic model I can get from Australia but just wish to make sure it will work before I pay the $150 it costs.
Cheers, Felix

i have a 2013 model of panasonic and was wondering if this TY-CC20W camera will work with it?

I purchased a TX-L50E6B TV and a TY-CC20W Skype camera before Christmas. I have set up the camera and Skype and obtained an excellent picture, but the outgoing picture cuts out every few seconds and restarts. I fear that my upload speed (0.75MBs) is too low for the HD output of the camera. I can find no way of modifying the camera output. Is this correct or is there something I can do to rectify the situation?

Hello,
After searching the web/forum for answer on how to output the skype audio to external speaker, I finally decided to try and contact skype and panasonic customer service, with little hope of anser/resolution.
First contact conforted me in this feeling (each company advising to seek support from the other one, arguing that the issue wasn't due to their soft/hardware), but in the end I finally got an answer from panasonic europe customer support, which I quote below:

"
Dear customer,
Thank you for your e-mail regarding your Panasonic VT50.

It is correct that for Skype external audio devices are turned off. Skype only works with the internal speakers.

The reason for this is that from a certain volume of the speakers there is to feedback loops (whistling).

For external speakers this feedback would be depending on the location of the Speakers even more present.

The maximum volume of the internal speaker is set on Skype to a value where no such no feedback occurs.

I trust that the above information will be of assistance to you.

However, of course, if you should have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us by telephoning our Customer Communications Centre on 041 – 412 11 23 60 (* your regular landline phone provider prices)
