A New Limited-Edition Pentax K-5 with a Truly Thin (0.36") 40mm Lens

Share

Pentax has a loyal following going back decades, and even today DSLRs wearing the Pentax nameplate are recognized as being among the finest in the world of compact DSLRs. Pentax’s current flagship camera is the K-5, a solid performer that boasts a rugged body (stainless-steel chassis with magnesium-alloy body panels), fully-sealed weatherproofing, an APS-C format, 16.3-megapixel CMOS sensor and the ability to capture up to seven frames per second at a choice of ISO sensitivities ranging from 80 to 51,200.

To add a bit of spark to the line, Pentax has introduced the Pentax K-5 Special Edition, a silver-finished camera that comes bundled with a truly travel friendly, slim profile smc PENTAX-DA 40mm f/2.8 XS lens which, according to Pentax, is the world’s thinnest (0.36” / 9.2mm) interchangeable lens. (If you’re familiar with Pentax’s current compact 40mm lenses, the new lens is almost half the depth of the already compact Pentax SMC-DA 40mm f/2.8 LTD and SMCP-DA 40mm f/2.8 LTD.)

The new smc PENTAX-DA 40mm f/2.8 XS, which was designed by Marc Newson, takes in the equivalent field of view of a 61mm lens on a full-frame 35mm DSLR, yet extends from the lens mount just a smidgen more than a body cap. This thin lens is comprised of five elements in four groups, the new "skinny forty" focuses down to 16”, which is impressively close for optics in this class; it features 27mm filter threads when conditions call for filters or shades.

Other standard features found on both the standard and new limited edition Pentax K-5 include a 3.0-inch 921,000-dot LCD, 100% image viewing through a notably bright pentaprism, a 77-segment metering system, an 11-point SAFOX IX+ autofocus system, native support for both Pentax PEF and Adobe DNG (14-bit) RAW files, in-camera HDR capture and 1080p HD video at 25 frames per second with stereo sound.

Pentax also offers an extensive lineup of lenses to go along with its new limited edition camera kits including fast, fixed primes, a wide range of zooms, ultra wides, long telephotos and a choice of macro lenses. In addition to all of Pentax’s current lens offerings, you can also mount almost every Pentax lens ever made (directly or via adapters) on a Pentax DSLR, and because image stabilization is an in-camera function among Pentax DSLRs, all Pentax lenses become image stabilized the moment you mount them on any Pentax DSLR.

Do be advised that Pentax is manufacturing only 1,500 Pentax K-5 Silver Special Edition kits for worldwide distribution, so if you want one it’s advisable to sign up soon. We expect delivery of our allotment of these limited edition DSLR kits sometime around March 28, 2012.
