New Pentax K-01 APS-C Format Mirrorless Camera System

Share

Pentax has joined the mirrorless camera system club with the announcement of the Pentax K-01. Unlike a majority of the current crop of mirrorless camera systems, which contain Four Thirds format sensors, the new Pentax K-01 is designed around a larger APS-C CMOS sensor (1.5x) that offers 16MP. In theory and practice, this translates into pictures containing better detail and a wider dynamic range.

Designed by Marc Newson, machined from aluminum and finished in a choice of black, white and yellow, the new Pentax captures stills in the form of JPEGs or (DNG) RAW at capture rates of up to six frames per second. The Pentax K-01 can also capture full-HD 1080p at 30 frames per second (or 720p at 60 frames per second) with H.264 compression.

One of the cooler aspects of the new camera is that like Pentax’s DSLRs, the new camera is compatible with all Pentax K-mount optics and can take full advantage of Pentax’s in-camera, sensor-shift Shake and Dust control technologies.

Other features found on the new Pentax K-01 include a 3.0-inch (920,000-dot) LCD; a 30-second to 1/4000-second shutter speed range; a top night-busting ISO of 25600; P, Tv, Av, and Manual shooting modes; a Silent Shutter mode; automatic pre-set exposure modes; in-camera HDR capture for an expanded dynamic range when shooting in contrasty lighting conditions; Creative Filters; and a Focus Peak mode for critical manual focusing.

To complement the new camera, Pentax has also introduced the smc Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 XS “pancake” lens, a flat (only 0.36" thin) 61mm equivalent normal lens that renders sharp imagery while maintaining the compact, low-profile design of the Pentax K-01 camera body. Featuring five elements in four groups, Pentax SP lens coatings for reduced glare and improved contrast and color saturation levels, a 27mm filter thread and a minimum focusing distance of 16 inches, the Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 XS is the perfect companion for not only the K-01, but for all Pentax DSLRs.

Dear Pentax,

I DO Believe that you are kicking Nikon's Butt !!

Congrats...   This looks like a fine product.

Greg

The camera specs are great, but as a Realtor, I need a wide-angle lens that is at least 18mm equivalent. There is a 15mm lens at over $500, but it is 15mm, = to 22.5. I spent about $850 on my Sony NEX-3 with 18mm equivalent and optional high-powered flash. I can't think of any hybrid camera other than Sony where you can join the under 20mm club for less than $1000.

Would this camera take, with an adaptor, the Leica lenses?

*****;

The Novoflex LEM/PENT Lens Mount Adapter allows a lens with the Pentax K mount to be mounted onto a Leica M type camera body.

Thanks,

My question was, if I could use, with a Novoflex adapter, my Leica M lenses on the the Pentax K-01 APS C Mirrorless camera.

*****,

With the Novoflex adapter, yes.

Thanks Chuck,

Could you tell me which Novoflex adapter would allow me to use my Leica M lenses on the Pentax K01 I do not seem to find it.

*****;

My appologies, I got it backwards. The Novofles adapter accepts Pentax lens on Leica M bodies. Since the K-01 accepts standard K mount lens, it has the same focus distance as regualr SLR's with a mirror. M bodies do not have the reflex mirror and are therefor thinner. M lenses can be used on standard Micro 4/3rd bodies, the Ricoh GXR and the Sony NEX line.

Leica Lens Adapters

 I used my  LEICA SUMMICRON 50mm f/2 Dual Range on an Olympus Pen and NEX-5n with these adapters. I am sorry for the confusion my error has caused you.
