People love National Geographic magazine, the TV specials on PBS and the many different TV programs on the National Geographic Channel for the fabulous photography and videography. Perhaps, if you carry your gear in a National Geographic camera bag, a bit of that National Geographic perfection will shine through in your own work.
The National Geographic Society has been around since 1888, and its main mission is to inspire people to care about the planet. But people don’t care about stuff they don’t know about. That’s why the photos and films captured by adventurous professionals around the globe are so important: they highlight exotic people, places and topics around the globe and influence other people to care about them.
In order to capture photos and films from exotic locations, they have to get their gear there and back in one piece. National Geographic camera bags can help you do that, too.
The materials used to make National Geographic bags are more environmentally friendly than what’s used in typical gear. The bags are rugged, long lasting and wear resistant, and they protect your gear from damage. Made mostly of brown cotton canvas, the National Geographic bags are less flashy than typical gear, making you less of a target for thieves.
Let’s take a quick look at some of the National Geographic gear that B&H carries. Before we get to individual models, note that most of these camera bags are part of the National Geographic Africa Series, and all of them are made of brown 100% cotton canvas coated with polyurethane for water repellency. They also feature a water-repellent polyurethane-coated polyester lining, and inserts printed with an African art motif. I’ll give the interior dimensions, rather than the exterior dimensions, because the interior dimensions determine the maximum size equipment that will fit in them. The exterior dimensions are naturally a bit larger than the interior dimensions.
A small pouch is all you need to carry and protect a small point-and-shoot camera or micro camcorder and any required accessories and media. The NG A1212 is a small vertical-style pouch that’s deeper than it is wide. The NG A1212 can be carried by an adjustable shoulder strap or belt loop. The interior dimensions of the NG A1212 are 3.5 inches wide (left to right) by 4.7 inches high (top to bottom) by 2.1 inches deep (front to back) and it weighs 7.05 ounces including the shoulder strap. A front pocket will hold all your accessories.
The NG A1222 is a small horizontal style camera pouch that’s wider than it is deep. It is carried using a wide belt loop on the back of the pouch. It does not come with a shoulder strap. The NG A1222’s interior dimensions measure 4.5 inches wide by 3.1 inches high by 1.9 inches deep and it weighs 3.52 ounces.
Holster cases are designed to hang by your side to keep your gear ready at all times. The NG A2200 is a small holster case that will fit a larger, more advanced point-and-shoot camera kit, a small DSLR camera kit or a small camcorder kit. The NG A2200 is carried by a padded handle or an adjustable shoulder strap, and it has a front pocket for safely stowing your accessories. An interior zipper-sealed flap keeps out dust and dirt, while a buckle and strap provide exterior closure. The main compartment of the NG A2200 measures 3.9 inches wide by 5.3 inches high by 3.7 inches deep. The case weighs 7.05 ounces.
Similar but larger, the NG A2210 is a medium size holster case with two halfway modular dividers that you can use to customize the interior to properly fit your gear. Like the NG A2200, the NG A2210 has an interior zipper sealed flap that keeps out dust and dirt, and a buckle and strap to keep the case closed. It’s carried by a padded handle or an adjustable shoulder strap. The interior dimensions of the main compartment are 6.3 inches wide by 7.48 inches high by 4.3 inches deep and there's a front accessory pocket. The NG A2210 weighs 14.1 ounces.
While all of these bags are water repellent, they’re certainly not waterproof. For photo shoots scheduled during monsoon season your gear needs more protection. An A2210RC rain cover accessory for the holster case slips over the holster case to prevent driving rain from getting at your gear.
Professional photographers usually have to carry more than just camera gear these days. The NG A2540 is a relatively small satchel with room for a DSLR camera kit or a camcorder kit and all of your accessories. There’s also a padded compartment that can hold a netbook with a screen up to 9 inches in size. A removable padded insert, basically a separate inner bag, protects your camera gear and accessories, and a halfway modular divider lets you customize its interior. An easy-access pocket on the outside of the cover flap is ideal for storing keys and other small items and a front organizer pocket underneath the cover flap is just the right size for your cell phone, passport and other larger items. The cover flap is secured by two buckle straps.
The NG A2540 satchel can be carried by its handle or adjustable shoulder strap, and a rear trolley strap lets you slide the bag over the handle of a rolling suitcase. The interior dimensions of the main compartment are 10.6 inches wide by 9.0 inches high by 4.5 inches deep and the interior dimensions of the padded insert are 6.8 inches wide by 6.5 inches high by x 4.3 inches deep. The NG A2540 satchel weighs 2.36 pounds.
If you prefer a satchel with an upright design and room for a larger computer, consider the NG A2550. It has the same design and features as the NG A2540, but it will easily fit a notebook computer with a screen up to 15 inches, and you might be able to squeeze in a notebook with a 17-inch screen depending on the particular notebook. The interior dimensions of the NG A2550’s main compartment are 11.8 inches wide by 14.9 inches high by 5.5 inches deep. The NG A2550 comes with the same the padded insert as the NG A2540 with the interior dimensions of 6.8 inches wide by 6.5 inches high by x 4.3 inches deep. The NG A2550 weighs 2.6 pounds.
The NG A2560 medium-size satchel is a bit smaller than the NG A2550 with a more horizontal design. Like the NG A2540 and NG A2550, the NG A2560 has room for a DSLR camera kit or camcorder kit, all your accessories and a notebook computer with a screen up to 15.4 inches. The interior dimensions of the NG A2560’s main compartment are 13.7 inches wide by 11.4 inches high by 5.5 inches deep. Its padded insert has the interior dimensions of 7.8 inches wide by 6.5 inches high by x 4.3 inches deep. The NG A2560 weighs 2.3 pounds.
Again, if it’s monsoon season, you need a rain cover to keep these satchels dry. Try the A2560 rain cover.
National Geographic rucksacks can be carried by the handle like a conventional bag, carried with a shoulder strap or worn like a backpack. The NG A5250 rucksack looks more like a camera bag than a backpack and its shoulder/backpack straps are detachable. It’s got convenience pockets on the outside and dimensions of 12.2 inches wide by 16.7 inches high by 4.7 inches deep. It will hold a DSLR camera kit or a camcorder kit and all of your accessories, along with a notebook computer with a screen up to 15.4 inches. The NG A5250 rucksack weighs 3 pounds.
The NG A5270 rucksack looks more like a backpack than a camera bag, with two side pouches, two easy-access pockets and separate upper and lower compartments. Like the NG A5250, the NG A5270 will hold a DSLR camera kit or a camcorder kit and all of your accessories, along with a notebook computer with a screen up to 15.4 inches. The backpack straps are not detachable, and a sternum strap that goes across the chest helps distribute a heavy load more evenly. The NG A5270 rucksack measures 12.2 inches wide by 17.3 inches high by 7.1 inches deep and weighs 3 pounds.
If you want to enhance the weather protection of either of these rucksacks, the A7200 rain cape case is just the ticket.
If you’re looking for a small rolling suitcase that matches the appearance of the National Geographic Africa Series camera bags, then look no further than the A6010 onboard roller. The A6010 has room for a bit of camera gear, clothing, a small notebook computer and lots of accessories. The suitcase measures 9.8 inches wide by 14.2 inches high by 7.1 inches deep and weighs 8 pounds. It has built-in wheels and a telescoping handle that makes hustling through airports a breeze.
If you like duffle bags, you’ll like the NG A6120 duffle bag. It will hold and protect a DSLR camera or camcorder kit with media accessories in a removable padded insert. A large main compartment can hold your clothes and everyday gear. A halfway modular divider lets you customize the inside of the bag. Two easy-access pockets and a front organizer pocket provide room for accessories. The bag is carried by its two handles or adjustable shoulder strap. A zipper closure keeps everything inside. The interior dimensions of the main compartment are 23.2 inches wide by 11.2 inches high by 14.5 inches deep and the interior dimensions of the padded insert are 7.8 inches wide by 6.5 inches high by x 4.3 inches deep. The NG A6120 duffle bag weighs 3.2 pounds.
If you’ve got a simple tote bag on your wish list, one that you'd like to coordinate with any of these National Geographic camera bags, you have two useful options. The medium-size A8220 tote bag measures 13.8 inches wide by 16.5 inches high by 3.5 inches deep. The large-size A8240 tote bag, with hand grips and shoulder straps, measures 17.7 inches wide by 13 inches high by 7.9 inches deep.
The A9200 utility kit is a good add-on for any of the National Geographic bags. The A9200 utility kit unfolds to reveal various pockets that are ideal for storing accessories such as batteries, chargers and cables or even toiletries when traveling. When closed, the A9200 utility kit measures 9.4 inches wide by 6.3 inches high by 2.6 inches deep.
If you use a shoulder strap with any of these bags to carry heavy gear around, you’ll be interested in the A7300 shoulder pad. It will attach to any shoulder strap and prevent your shoulder from getting sore when carrying a heavy load.
