The LCD screen on most DSLR cameras doesn’t exceed 3.2” in size, which is a pretty tight space in which to judge the quality of your work. However, if you shoot near an Apple iPad, or a Mac computer, a new product called the iUSBportCAMERA makes it possible to instantly send your images wirelessly to their screens, so you can quickly review a large version of the image you just shot. A free app makes it possible to control your camera with a mobile device, as well as giving you time lapse, HDR bracketing and cloud storage capabilities.
A true mobile device itself, the iUSBportCAMERA runs on an internal rechargeable battery, and mounts on the shoe of your camera or to a tripod via its integrated 1/4”-20 thread. It can be used in the studio utilizing an existing Wi-Fi network, or it can create its own Wi-Fi network to interface the connected camera wirelessly in the field. In short, you can use the iUSBportCAMERA anywhere you go.
Using the device is relatively simple. There is only one control on the iUSBportCAMERA: the Power button. It ships with two cables, a mini-USB to USB cable for connecting it to your camera, and a USB charging cable. To use the iUSBportCAMERA, you simply power it up, connect the USB cable to the camera and the device, and tap on the Settings icon on your iPad or iPhone. In Settings, select the iUSBportCAMERA from the list of available Wi-Fi networks. A small LCD screen and a blue activity LED on the device keep you informed of its current state.
The free iUSBportCAMERA iOS app features three modes: Remote Camera, Session Preview and Local Folders. The Remote Camera mode allows you to adjust the camera’s ISO settings, aperture, shutter speed and white balance, as well as take and view pictures. A histogram is provided in the bottom right corner of this mode as well. The iUSBportCAMERA sends JPEGs to your iOS device, so you’ll have to set your camera to RAW + JPEG mode if you want to shoot RAW files with your DSLR. If you’re sending images to a Mac wirelessly with the iUSBportCAMERA, you can send full RAW images.
Once the image file has been wirelessly transferred to the Apple device, you can pinch-to-zoom in order to more accurately judge the sharpness of focus and other aspects of the image. The Remote Camera mode of the app is also where you control time lapse settings.
The Session Preview mode of the iUSBportCAMERA app allows you to examine the pictures that you’ve taken so far, without being able to adjust the settings on the camera or take more pictures. This is a good mode to put the app in when you’re going to hand the Apple device to a client or subject, so you can be sure that they won’t accidentally change the camera’s settings. The Local Folders mode allows you to navigate and view files stored on your camera and other areas within the connected network.
Some of the most interesting equipment released these days tends to originate from Kickstarter campaigns, and the new iUSBportCAMERA is no different. However, unlike other Kickstarter products, the iUSBportCAMERA made the transition from campaign idea to a physical product that shipped in less than four months. It was the perfect combination of a new product concept that people actively wanted and a company that was organized and prepared to act.
The shoe at the base of the iUSBportCAMERA doesn’t feature a lock to fasten it solidly to the camera, so the Pearstone Accessory Shoe Adapter is a good accessory to accompany this device. The Pearstone adapter fits into your camera’s shoe and locks into place, and a 1/4"-20 stud on top of it can be screwed into the iUSBportCAMERA, holding it firmly in place.
