Kelly Moore Camera Bags: Sweet Southern Style

Kelly Moore bags are a refreshing change for anyone who wants a multifunctional camera bag with personality and fun written all over it. While remaining stylish and comfortable, not to mention providing great protection for equipment, Kelly Moore bags are what photographers want and need for transporting their gear. It seems that Kelly Moore considered all the angles: if you are a photographing mom, these bags protect your camera and can accommodate your wallet, keys, phone—even baby diapers! Yes, these bags can also double as diaper bags. Instead of “How do you like it?” the questions asked should be, “What’s not to love?” and “How can you live without one?”

A sweet Southern girl from Louisiana, Kelly Moore started out as a photographer more than 14 years ago. From the beginning, she always felt that a great, stylish, functional camera bag was hard to find. So, since she could not find one, she decided to design a camera bag herself. Who better to design a camera bag than a photographer who understands what other photographers would want? Kelly Moore created her bags so that a photographer could look stylish and not be overburdened with the bag she is carrying (also to allow a photographer to change lenses without wrestling with the camera bag).

Her number-one goal with this line of bags is to help you keep your life organized, whether you are a professional photographer, a hobbyist, a student, a mom with a camera, or anyone who needs the highest-functioning bag. Kelly Moore says, “If you have stuff, our bags will help keep your stuff organized.” She also says that as her clients evolve, so will the bags. Adding a personal touch, she names each bag after a person in her life—revealing her vested interest in and love for her product. So, now that you know a little about Kelly Moore, let’s introduce the bags themselves.

Named after Kelly Moore herself, the first bag that she designed was the Classic Bag (available in cranberry croc). She wanted to create a bag that did not look like a camera bag, was padded throughout to protect expensive equipment, could stand on its own, and would be comfortable enough to carry for longer periods of time, such as at a wedding or other fast-paced event. On the front of the Classic are two 8 x 5.75" (20.3 x 14.6 cm) snap pockets, perfect for your wallet, keys, cash, credit or ID cards, cords, batteries or other accessories. There is a large zipper pocket on the back that can hold an iPad, and one smaller pocket on each side for easy access to your phone. This bag has one long strap, adjustable up to 56 inches (1.4 m), so you can carry it on your shoulder or sling it messenger style. The strap also has a shoulder pad, so it is comfortable when worn for a long period of time.

To offer maximum functionality, the Classic Bag comes with three adjustable, removable padded interior dividers that can be configured any way you like, to create up to four sections. They are held in place with touch-fastener material. Depending on how you utilize the adjustable dividers, the Classic interior can hold a full camera body with a lens attached and still have room for an additional two lenses and a flash. This bag will also hold a 70-200mm lens up to 8 inches (20.3cm) long. When worn as a messenger bag, it conforms nicely to the body and allows easy access to all of your gear. When you are finished photographing, just close the snaps along the top of the bag and your equipment will remain secure. This Kelly Moore Classic Bag definitely is classic in style, functionality and accessibility.

Next up is the Posey 2 Bag, named after Kelly Moore’s daughter Posey, who, as Kelly says on her site, is “small and full of surprises”—just like this bag. It has been redesigned and tweaked to make it just a bit better and is even more accommodating than its original version, the Posey, proving that Kelly really does listen to her customers’ feedback and really does evolve with them. The Posey 2 Bag’s purpose is to be small, yet extremely functional. Sometimes you don’t want to carry all your equipment; you may just want your camera and one or two lenses. This bag is meant to stay lightweight and easy to carry for shooting events or even when traveling. The top flaps make this bag very versatile, and dressier than your garden variety camera bag. You can fold the flaps up and carry the bag by the top handle (the flaps are secured face-to-face by magnets), or you can fold them down and have a very stylish clutch that zips closed. Either way you employ the flaps, there is also an adjustable—up to 56 inches (1.4 m)—messenger strap with shoulder pad, which can be attached or removed. As a messenger bag, the Posey 2 adheres very comfortably to the body.

On the front of the Posey 2 bag is a 7.5 x 7.5" (19 x 19 cm) zipper pocket for your keys, cash, checkbook or business-card case; an 8 x 7.5" (20.3 x 19 cm) envelope pocket for your phone or snacks; and a 7.5 x 7.5" (19 x 19 cm) zippered “posey pocket” that opens up to hold up to 10 credit or ID cards and 12 memory cards. On the back is a 13-inch-wide (33 cm) envelope pocket that can hold an iPad—but if it’s used in that way, it may decrease some of the inside space. On the inside you can play around with two adjustable, removable padded dividers to accommodate your needs. This bag can carry a 70-200mm lens, but its length will prevent the bag from zipping closed. At that point, you can raise the flaps and protect the lens with the magnetic closure on the flipped-up flaps. This bag can also hold a camera body with the lens attached and another lens or a flash, depending on how you adjust the dividers. And yes, diapers and wipes also can fit quite nicely along with your camera. The bag (available in black, gray, mustard or orange sherbet) can also stand by itself. It is small, but the Posey 2 Bag definitely is full of surprises!

Named after Kelly Moore’s best friend Brandy H., the B-Hobo Bag (available in heather gray) is a medium bag that can carry at least three lenses, yet it is still flexible. The bag has a full-zipper closure, but if you like more easy access to your equipment, it also has an adorable overlaying flap with a magnetic closure. The flap protects your equipment but also makes the bag look very stylish and fun. This bag is perfect to use every day (a very hip diaper bag), but is also great for professional photographers or hobbyists on shoots.

There are two 4.5 x 5" (11.43 x 12.7 cm) zipper pockets on the front and one 9 x 5" (22.9 x 12.7 cm) zipper pocket on the back. This larger exterior pocket will not hold an iPad, but included with the bag is an adjustable, padded, removable iPad divider for the interior. Each side of the bag has a small envelope pocket, providing easy access to your phone and accessories. The bag comes with two straps—a short strap for carrying it over your shoulder and under your arm, and a removable messenger strap with shoulder pad, adjustable up to 56 inches (1.4m).

In addition to the iPad divider already mentioned, there are three smaller adjustable, removable, padded dividers that you can configure in whatever manner you wish. A 70-200mm lens fits in the outer section of the bag. A 10-inch (25.4-cm) lens will fit comfortably. This bag also holds a camera with a lens attached, and an additional lens if you desire it. The bag, when worn messenger style, stays closely and comfortably against your body. If you want easy access to your equipment while shooting, just pull the flap over and keep your bag open so its contents will be accessible for easy lens changes. If you need to set it down, don’t worry, because this bag will also stand on its own. The B-Hobo Bag is stylish and comfortable, allows easy access to your gear, and no one will know it’s a camera bag.

Named after Kelly Moore’s niece Miranda, who was her daughter’s nanny, the Mimi Bag (available in lavender) holds everything you may need. This bag’s expanded profile is much larger than the B-Hobo Bag or the Posey 2 Bag, but the bag is not huge enough to be cumbersome (unless you fill it to the brim). The bag collapses to a deceptive size when carried because it holds way more than you think it would. Without dividers, it collapses even further, so it becomes a very functional and versatile bag for everyday life (again, this would double as an awesome diaper bag).

The Mimi has two smaller handles that you can wear over your shoulder or at your elbow, and a removable messenger strap with a shoulder pad that’s adjustable up to 56 inches. This roomy bag has lots of storage, starting with the two 5.5 x 5.5" (14 x 14 cm) zipper pockets on the front for your keys, cash and an energy bar or other snack. On the back is an 11.5 x 9" (29.21 x 22.9 cm) open envelope pocket that will hold the iPad. There is also a 9.5 x 6" (23.9 x 15.24 cm) zipper pocket where you can stash your checkbook, receipts, memory cards, cords or your phone. The outside has room for anything you may need apart from your equipment. Fully unzip the bag and it opens wide, without any struggle, to reveal more available storage space. The Mimi Bag comes with three medium-sized, padded, removable, adjustable dividers and two smaller sub-dividers (for a total of five dividers) that can be configured any way you want, to carry anything you want.

What do you need to fit in your bag? It will all fit: it is just a matter of how you want it organized between the dividers. A smaller divider can even be attached to one side of the bag to create a small wall pocket. Here is an example of what can fit in this bag: a lens pen and tape in a wall pocket, one 4 x 6" (10.16 x 15.24 cm) or 6 x 6" (15.24 x 15.24 cm) camera body with lens and grip attached, one 70-200mm lens (a lens 9 inches long—22.9 cm—will fit vertically or horizontally), an 80mm lens, a flash and two remote triggers.

With all this equipment inside, the bag fully zips and still looks trim. You would never know it was a camera bag with all that gear inside. However, be aware that if you put weighty equipment in this bag, it will be heavy to carry. This is not a bag to fill to capacity and then carry around for eight hours on a wedding shoot. If you pack it full, it could be more of a “go-to” bag that has all your equipment handy if or when you need it, very accommodating when used in conjunction with the Classic, the B-Hobo or the Posey 2. The Mimi Bag will hold all your treasures; just don’t pull a muscle after it is full.

The “mother” of all camera bags, the JuJu Bag (available in walnut), is named after Kelly Moore’s mom, called “JuJu” by Kelly’s daughter, Posey. This is another larger bag that is meant to be a go-to bag. It can hold all the equipment you may need so you know you’ll have an extra camera, lens, flash, batteries or other accessories close by. It is not a bag you will want to carry around with you on a shoot (look to the Classic, the B-Hobo, or the Posey 2 for that purpose). The bag is very structured and padded; as Kelly herself says, it is a “tank.” It comes with two shoulder straps so you can carry it under arm, as well as a removable, adjustable-up-to-60-inches messenger strap with a shoulder pad so that you can carry it cross-body.

On the front are a 6 x 6" (15.24 x 15.24 cm) snap pocket and two 3 x 6" (7.62 x 15.24 cm) envelope pockets. There is also a snap pocket on each side of the bag identical to the snap pocket on the front. On the back is an 11-inch-wide (27.94 cm) zipper pocket. The exterior pockets hold everything the interior cannot, but inside, for example, this bag can easily carry five lenses, a full camera body, two flashes, two remote triggers and two battery packs. So what would be left for the exterior storage? Cords, wallet, phone, pens, lens pens or keys.

All of these things fit conveniently in this bag. Utilize the five padded, adjustable, removable dividers to stow whatever you want. The top does have a jacket-style zipper closure, but if you want to leave the bag open for easier access, the zippered edges fold in and attach magnetically to keep the sides of the bag out of your way. If you do want the zipper closed, this bag provides amazing, complete protection for your gear. To seal your bag completely, there are side flaps at the top of the bag that magnetically cover the little gaps the main closure can’t cover. The mother of all camera bags does do and have it all, and much like a mother, this bag is one that will give you all the protection you’ll ever need.

Perfect for traveling (with or without children) or as another “go-to” bag is the Libby Bag (available in sapphire). This bag was named after Kelly’s friend Libby, who was the first person to test it out and carry it around for nine months. This bag can be used as a carry-on. It can hold your camera gear and laptop or your camera gear and anything else you need, including your travel necessities or diapers, wipes and toys for your little one.

On the front there is a 10.5-inch-wide (25.4 cm) zipper pocket, perfect for your wallet and keys, and then two 6.5 x 7.5" (16.51 x 19.05 cm) zipper pockets for gum, mints, sun block, business cards or lip gloss. Each side has a pocket; one will cradle your phone. On the back is another 11-inch-wide (27.96 cm) zipper pocket that will comfortably fit an iPad. The bag comes with two shoulder handles and one removable messenger strap with a shoulder pad, adjustable up to 56 inches (1.4 m). This was the first Kelly Moore camera bag specifically for women that could accommodate a notebook computer—a MacBook up to 17 inches (43.18 cm) can fit, but the bag may be snug for a larger, thicker PC laptop.

This bag comes with one long laptop divider, three medium-sized dividers and two smaller dividers. They are all padded, adjustable and removable, so you can configure them however you like. If you are not carrying a computer, the laptop divider can also be used to divide the bag into two sections. The purpose of these dividers is to obtain the most versatility possible from the bag. Without a laptop, what follows is an example of the things you can fit in the bag with the laptop divider creating two sections: on one side you can fit a 4 x 6" (10.16 x 15.24 cm) or 6 x 6" (15.24 x 15.24 cm) camera body with grip and lens attached, a 70-200mm lens up to 10 inches long (25.4 cm), an 80mm lens, two flashes and two remote triggers.

On the other side of the divider, instead of a laptop, you could put your diaper-bag contents or your travel necessities, your makeup and even a change of clothes. There is also another divider, which comes only with the Libby, which you can lay across the top of all your equipment for even more protection and extra storage space on top of it. This is perfect for travel, but remember that if you put heavy equipment inside, the bag will be heavy, so don’t overwhelm yourself.

There’s a cute story about the name of the Kelly Boy Bag (available in mustard). Kelly Moore and her husband are both named Kelly, so their friends call them “Kelly Boy” and “Kelly Girl,” hence the Kelly Boy Bag. And yes, this bag does have “boy” in the title, but it can be used by men or women. Kelly Moore just wanted to give guys an option other than the usual boring black laptop and camera bags designed for men. There is a large flap on the bag that has hidden magnets to keep it securely closed. On the front of the bag are one 11 x 7" (27.94 x 17.78 cm) zipper pocket and two 5.75 x 7" (14.61 x 17.78 cm) zipper pockets, which have envelope pockets on their fronts. On each side has a small envelope pocket large enough for your phone, some pens or a digital stylus. On the back is a 16 x 9" (40.64 x 22.86 cm) envelope pocket that can hold your iPad.

This bag also comes with three padded, removable, adjustable dividers that can be configured any way you want. The Kelly Boy can hold a camera body with a lens attached; a 70-200mm lens; an additional lens up to 10 inches (25.4 cm) long; and a flash. A laptop divider is also included that allows the bag to carry a MacBook up to 17 inches (43.18 cm), but a thicker PC notebook may be a tight fit. The bag comes with one messenger strap with shoulder pad. The strap adjusts up to 56 inches (1.4 m) long. The bag fits comfortably when worn across the body. For easy access to your camera equipment, just keep the flap open as you carry it. This bag is relaxed and comfortable, just as any working pro would like to be.

The Thirst Relief Bag (available in wax canvas with sand trim or wax canvas with brown trim) is named for the cause it sponsors. Jim Davis Hicks started the Thirst Relief International organization to provide clean drinking water to people around the world who do not have it; and through this bag, Kelly Moore is embracing that initiative. A portion of the proceeds from the purchase of this bag provides a lifetime of clean drinking water for up to four people.

The Thirst Relief Bag is the same size and profile as the Kelly Boy Bag, and also can be used by men or women. The bag is not too big or small; it can fit everything you may need, yet it won’t weigh you down when full. It is made of waxed canvas, a different material than all the other Kelly Moore bags. It scuffs nicely, meaning if your bag gets scuffed it is not ruined, but develops more character. There is a small handle at the top of the bag and also a removable messenger strap, adjustable up to 56 inches (1.4 m), with a shoulder pad. The over-flap closes with two smooth push locks that seal the bag securely.

A special item on this bag is a zippered memory card holder on one side that holds 8 memory cards; on the other side is a small pocket perfect for holding your phone. On the back is a 16 x 9" (40.64 x 22.86 cm) envelope pocket with a hidden magnetic closure that can hold an iPad. On the front of the bag is an 11 x 7" (27.94 x 17.78 cm) zipper pocket and two 5.75 x 7" (14.61 x 17.78 cm) zipper pockets that are also fronted with envelope pockets. On the inside there is a padded and removable laptop divider, which accommodates up to a 17-inch (43.18 cm) MacBook, but a larger, thicker PC may be a tight fit. Also included are three medium-sized, padded, adjustable, removable dividers that you can custom fit to your needs and equipment. This bag can accommodate a 4 x 6" (10.16 x 15.24 cm) or 6 x 6" (15.24 x 15.24 cm) camera body with a grip and a 70-200mm lens attached, a flash and another lens, with room to spare. If you are carrying the lenses separate from the camera, this bag can fit a lens up to 10 inches (25.4 cm) long. When worn messenger style, this bag conforms nicely to the body. If carrying it while shooting, leaving the flap open allows for very easy access to all your equipment. You will not be thirsty for another bag after using this one.

As you can see, these bags are pretty unique, as is Kelly Moore. The things she loves most seem to be her family and friends, photography and helping people organize their lives. Each of these things comes through in her line of bags. She has brought fun and functionality to the world of camera bags, making them appealing even to first-time users. Whether you are a photographer, a student, a hobbyist, or a mom with a camera and a kid in diapers, use these bags as you wish and you’ll feel your life become organized, with style.

These bags look awesome!! I want them all! Thanks for this article!

I love that these bags are man-made, and that they don't look like camera bags. I wish you carried more bags like this. I agree with the other post, I want them all too!
