Crumpler Bags: Quality Bags and Cases from Down Under

Share

Crumpler Bags did not begin as part of any business plan, but it was a venture that grew simply, out of a creative desire to make a fantastic bag. In 1992, a young man in Australia wanted to make a strong bag that would carry a beer home on his bike. Stuart "Stu" Crumpler began with his grandmother's old sewing machine. But then, a year later, he met a parachute maker who showed him the proper way to stitch a bag. Crumpler began by sewing one bag at a time; bike couriers found out about his bags and started using them.

They gave Stu tips on how to improve his designs, and he listened. Eventually, one bike-messenger company in particular, owned by Dave Roper and Will Miller, bought his bags for all their couriers and saw how much the couriers loved the bags’ strength and functionality. Roper and Miller loved the bags so much that they decided to leave their courier business and build a business of bags with Stu Crumpler. They started from the ground up, getting better equipment and making better bags as time went on. Now they are a company that still makes messenger bags, but also added to their list are camera bags of all shapes and sizes. Stu believes his initial inexperience in making bags was beneficial to his success. He says, "We have to be at one with the bag. We have to feel really good about them before going into production. Whether for better or worse—and it was often worse—we worked it out for ourselves. We found our own way and that’s what makes us different."

Tuft Camera Pouch

Starting out with protection for the smaller cameras, the Crumpler Tuft Camera Pouch is a simple bag that will keep any slim compact digital camera safe from dings and scratches. Your camera will always be readily available while your hands will be free. With its metal carabiner/loop combo, the pouch can latch to any belt or accessory or form its own loop around your messenger bag strap for practical and functional versatility. The pouch's Cordura material is water resistant and durable, as is its YKK zipper, and all of the stress-point stitching is reinforced. The Small size (available in Red/Red and Black/Red) will hold your slim compact camera or an iPod nano. The Medium size (available in Red/Red and Black/Red) is able to hold a chunky compact camera, an iPhone or an iPod. The Large size (available in Red/Red, Black/Red, and Beech/Orange) can hold a large compact camera. Two additional interior pockets in each size are perfect for memory cards.

Looking for an easy little lightweight shoulder bag to carry your compact camera in padded safety? The Crumpler Pleasure Dome Shoulder Bag opens like a clamshell with anti-slip gussets, so you have easy access and plenty of protection, because your camera will not fall out accidentally. The Pleasure Dome is available in two sizes. The Small size (available in Black/Black and Navy/Rust) can hold a Micro Four Thirds digital camera or large compact digital camera. The Medium size (available in Black/Black and Navy/Rust) has a touch-fastening divider that can be configured as you wish or taken out altogether for more space. The tough 900-Denier nylon exterior of the bag is water resistant. The Pleasure Dome can be attached to another bag or directly to your belt with touch-fastening webbing on the back, it can be carried with the top foam-padded carry handle or can be worn cross-body with the adjustable-length, detachable shoulder strap that has snap hooks and a tri-glide buckle system.

Million Dollar Home Bag

Whether it is the 1 Million Dollar or 7 Million Dollar Home Bag from Crumpler, it is all about the ease of use and ease of anywhere, everywhere, functional portability. The exterior fabric of each bag in this series is tough, water- and weather-resistant, 900-Denier nylon. The interior is a smooth, brushed, padded nylon that will not hurt the finish of your camera gear. There is even bonded nylon thread with bar-tack stitching on all stress points. The dual-zone front pocket on each bag features gusseted sides. Each level of this series has one or more touch-fastening and padded brushed nylon dividers (the 7 Million Dollar bag has eight!) for the interior that you can place as you wish to accommodate your camera gear.

Here are examples of what each bag in the Million Dollar series can carry: The 1 Million Dollar Home Bag from Crumpler (available in Beech/Black) is designed to hold a small compact camera and accessories like an extra battery and memory cards. The 2 Million Dollar Home Bag (available in Black/Olive Green) can hold a Micro Four Thirds DSLR and accessories. The 3 Million Dollar Home Bag (available in Beech/Black, Black/Olive Green, Brown/Orange/Gun Metal Gray and Purple/Olive Green) is able to hold a video camera, a DSLR with standard lens, a mirrorless camera with twin lens kit or a compact DSLR with standard zoom.

If you want something that can hold a basic set of camera or video equipment, the 4 Million Dollar Home Bag (available in Beech/Black, Navy/Rust, Purple/Olive Green and Black/Black) will hold a standard DSLR camera, two lenses and accessories. The 5 Million Dollar Home Bag (available in Black/Olive Green, Brown/Orange/Gun Metal, Purple/Olive Green, Navy/Rust, Black/Black) is slightly larger than the 4 Million Dollar Home Bag and is able to hold a DSLR camera, two lenses, 2 flashes and accessories. The 6 Million Dollar Home Bag (available in Brown/Orange/Gun Metal, Black/Olive Green, Black/Gun Metal, Purple/Olive Green, Navy/Rust and Black/Black) is designed to hold a standard DSLR camera with lens attached, plus two extra lenses (can carry one up to 70-200mm f/2.8), a flash and accessories.

Also noteworthy is that the 6 Million Dollar and 7 Million Dollar Home Bags both have carriers for tripods on the front of the bag. The 7 Million Dollar Home Bag (available in Olive with Red Accents) has room for a DSLR camera with lens attached, three additional lenses (can carry one up to 70-200mm f/2.8), two flashes and the usual smaller accessories.

Each bag in the Million Dollar series has an ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) laminated base that keeps the bag sturdy. All of the bags also have a large front flap that is secured by one or two rugged tri-glide buckles—one or two depending on which size bag you purchase. Touch fasteners on the underside have a silencer flap, so there is no more ripping noise when you open your bag. Under the flap is a zippered mesh pocket for small accessories. To keep you comfortable, the smaller 1-4 Million Dollar bags have adjustable 1.5-inch-wide polypropylene shoulder straps. To support the extra weight that the larger bags can contain, the 5-7 Million Dollar bags have 2-inch-wide shoulder straps, plus padded carry handles on top. The 3 and 4 Million Dollar bags feature one reinforced side accessory loop, the 5 and 6 Million Dollar bags feature two side accessory loops, and the 7 Million Dollar bag offers left and right pairs of side accessory loops onto which you can attach a cleaning cloth, media card holder or even a mini tripod.

Enthusiast Series

If you are looking for a bag that can be either a sling pack or a waist pack, look no further than the Crumpler Mild Enthusiast Sling Pack. This lightweight, water-resistant bag opens like a clamshell to avoid accidental spills of your gear. It can be worn on the shoulder for easy access or at the waist for easy lens and equipment changes. The Small and Medium bags have a 1.5-inch-wide strap and the Large has a 2-inch-wide strap, both with extra strong Quick2Flick buckles and quick-release clasps so that they can hang from the proper height from the shoulder or easily tighten and loosen around your waist. With two separate zippered openings from the front and the top, the interior of the main compartment is padded with brushed nylon and has touch-fastened dividers that can be configured as necessary to accommodate your gear. The twin grippers on the zippers have padlock loops which allow your camera gear added security.

The Small Mild Enthusiast Sling Pack (available in Beech/Black and Black/Gun Metal) can fit a Micro Four Thirds kit, a small DSLR or a small camcorder in the main compartment, and there is a slip pocket that can hold A5 documents. The Medium Mild Enthusiast (available in Beech/Black and Black/Gun Metal) is suitable for a standard DSLR and two lenses and has a slip pocket that can hold an iPad. With dividers, the Large Sling Pack (available in Black/Gun Metal) can hold a professional DLSR body plus two or three lenses (including a 70-200mm f/2.8), or remove the internal dividers and put in your pro DSLR with 70-200mm f/2.8 lens attached. The Large bag's slip pocket can hold an 11-inch MacBook Air or an iPad. Accessory loops on the front of the bag are elasticized for even more storage opportunities.

Another bag from the Enthusiast line is the durable, water-resistant Enthusiast Backpack (available in Black) made from 900-Denier nylon. For ergonomic comfort, the bag has a curved, padded and extra wide shoulder strap that lets you sling your bag to the left or to the right. A "third-leg stabilizer" strap also helps for on-the-go shoots. An integrated grab handle at the top makes for easy picking up and moving around. The bag also allows you to secure and access your gear in the main compartment from left and right side zippers. A combination of clasp and zipper closures makes your backpack doubly secure. There are two touch-fastening slip pockets with flaps, a large rear slip pocket and a three-pocket cargo area with a touch-fastening flap that has an organizer for accessories. Inside the padded, brushed nylon interior is a three-piece, touch-fastening divider system. The cargo compartment tray can also be removed to create one large storage space. With the dividers in place, there is room for a full pro body, two lenses and a flash in the main photo compartment. There is an internal padded sleeve that will fit an 11-inch MacBook Air or iPad. Any needed accessories, such as memory cards, chargers or cords, will fit in the top compartment. On the front are elasticized accessory loops. On the back of the bag is air-mesh paneling for perspiration control.

Extravaganza Pro Series

If you are a traveling location photographer, the Extravaganza Pro tri-model lineup is made for you. The black Bronzed Extravaganza is a 900-Denier nylon, water-resistant, slim line shoulder bag that has a wide, parallel zipper at the top for fantastically easy access. The bag is full of compartments for your accessories, including four small touch-fastener-sealed mesh pockets along the top, a padded sleeve for up to a 15-inch MacBook in the main compartment and a twin-zippered front compartment with a full-width mesh zippered wallet and nine-pocket organizer. Lockable with your padlock of choice, the interior of the main compartment is padded, brushed nylon and features 14 configurable, touch-fastening dividers, four with flap closures. The main compartment is able to hold a full DSLR camera body, two lenses (including a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens) and flashes. On the front are removable loops that can hold a tripod. The 2-inch-wide shoulder strap has a detachable air-mesh-paneled shoulder pad and a tri-glide buckle that will allow you to adjust the strap length. Foam-cushioned top carry handles are linked by an integrated leather grip with two snap fasteners. There is also a special labor-saver feature called a Dink-Me sleeve that allows you to slide your Bronzed Extravaganza onto the handle of your wheeled luggage.

Made of water-resistant 900-Denier Cordura nylon, the second in the trio of the Extravaganza series is the black Crumpler Flaked Extravaganza Rolling Bag. This bag is perfect for travel with its polyurethane anti-jam wheels and a telescopic neoprene trolley handle that can be hidden away and brought out at the touch of a button. A structurally reinforced base and molded bumpers enable it to be as stable standing vertically as it is horizontally. There are also a removable, adjustable and padded 1.5-inch-wide shoulder strap and a foam-padded top carry handle.

Security is also necessary when you travel. The Flaked bag has a built-in security chain that can be utilized with any Transportation Security Administration (TSA) approved padlock, which you purchase separately, to lock your bag to any immovable object. The front and main compartments can also be secured using your own padlocks. The hidden area of the trolley handle is also a see-through pocket that can hold your ID or business card. There are three storage compartments in this bag. In total, it can hold two DSLRs, 3-4 lenses (including a long zoom), two flashes, accessories and it has a separate sleeve within the front compartment in which you can stow up to a 15-inch MacBook. The main compartment is enclosed with two zippers and has a removable cradle. The cradle is made of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and contains 13 adjustable dividers that you can configure as you wish to accommodate your gear. There is also a false floor under which you can store cords, chargers or other accessories.

If you need your bag for an overnight excursion, just remove the cradle and you have a handsome piece of luggage. With three openings, one from the top and each side, you will always have easy access to all your equipment. Under the main compartment's lid there is a zippered mesh storage area, and on the front of the bag there is a separate compartment spanning the full width of the bag. This compartment has zippered wallets and a 9-pocket organizer perfect for holding pens, your cell phone, business cards, memory cards or any other smaller accessories. Removable loops on the front of the bag allow you to carry a tripod. On the back is another zippered slip pocket for even more storage of small gadgets.

The third bag in the Extravaganza trio is called the Gourmet Extravaganza Rolling Bag (available in Black). Much like the Flaked Extravaganza, this bag is fantastic for travel. It has injection-molded polyurethane anti-jam wheels and a hideaway, push-button trolley handle that can adjust to three positions. Along with the removable 1.5-inch-wide shoulder strap, which also has removable padding, is a padded top carry handle. The bag has the same security features as the Flaked, with a built-in security chain that can be fastened to just about anything, and the front and main compartments can be locked up with your own TSA-approved padlocks. This bag's handle hideaway also is a see-through pocket that can hold your ID tag or business card.

Unlike the Flaked bag, this bag has a 1680-Denier Ballistic nylon base in addition to its water-resistant 900-Denier Cordura nylon body. The hearty base makes it very sturdy, balanced and able to stand on its own both vertically and horizontally. Three compartments make this bag extremely functional. The main compartment has a full-size cradle that can be removed to make one large storage space for non-camera, personal use. But with the EVA-tough cradle, which has 20 adjustable and removable touch-fastener dividers, the main compartment is able to carry a more expansive camera system, including two DSLRs, 5-6 lenses (including a long zoom), two flashes and accessories.

There is a false floor in the main compartment, under which you can store chargers, cords or the like. Openings on three sides allow easy access at all times. Four zippered mesh pockets are located under the main lid. On the front is a separate compartment that has full-width zippered wallets and a 9-pocket organizer that can hold your cell phone, note pad, pens, memory cards and any other small necessities. This front compartment also has a slip pocket for your iPad. On the side of the bag are removable loops that can carry a tripod. A zippered slip pocket is also available in the back of the bag for even more small items.

If you are tired of lugging around a dedicated camera bag for your larger camera equipment, look no further than the Crumpler Haven Camera Pouch. This portable, padded, water-resistant pouch is an insert that you can put into any bag of your choice. In an instant, the Haven turns an ordinary bag into a camera bag, and then back to normal simply by removing the insert. Included is a main compartment that has two touch-fastener-mounting, slim-line, padded dividers which you can configure to fit your equipment as you wish.

The Haven is available in three sizes. The Small (available in Gray/Green, Black/Gray, Red/Black and Olive/Black) can hold a Micro Four Thirds, compact camera or DSLR and lens. The Medium (available in Black/Gray, Olive/Black, and Red/Black) is able to carry a DSLR twin-lens kit. Well, then the answer to your problem is the Small Crumpler Local Identity Backpack (available in Beech/Black/Orange). This backpack comes with a small Haven pouch that you can insert in a zippered side compartment to create a camera/laptop carrier. Local Identity Backpack Karachi Outpost Backpack

Karachi Outpost Backpack

With its super strength water- and weather-resistant, 1,000-Denier exterior, the Medium Crumpler Karachi Outpost Backpack (available in Black/Gun Metal) is unique in that the main opening is from the back of the bag. So, when you take off the backpack and put it on the floor face down, the harness and opening will remain clean, which means your clothing will remain clean as well when you put your pack back on. The back opening also keeps everything even more secure because a random pickpocket will be unable to get to the opening against your back. The main compartment has 300-Denier rip-stop lining and has 13 removable, configurable dividers, two that have fold-down flaps.

This backpack can hold up to three DSLR camera bodies, four lenses and flashes. If you want to use your backpack for something else, the main compartment is completely removable. There are an internal mesh cover that zippers closed and three touch-fastener-mounting stays that are elasticized. There is also a removable, padded laptop compartment that can fit up to a 15-inch laptop and has a six pocket "clutter buster." On each side is a large gusseted pocket with a hooded zipper. There are tripod straps to carry yours with you. Combined with chest and weight belts to distribute weight evenly, the ergonomic harness is wide and contours comfortably to your body. The back of the pack and the underside of the harness have Air Mesh padding to keep you well ventilated. Each harness strap also has a D-ring loop to which you can attach various gadgets. A padded carry handle is also available for easy pick-up-and-move action. A Small Karachi Outpost is also available. The bag is exactly like the Medium but has eight dividers in the main compartment instead of 13 and can carry only up to a 13-inch laptop.

"Also noteworthy is that the 6 Million Dollar and 7 Million Dollar Home Bags both have carriers for tripods on the front of the bag. I have a 7M Home bag but I cannot find the tripod carrier in front of the bag.

All bags are made in China now.
