Fujifilm FinePix S Series Long Zoom Cameras

Fujifilm has recently released an array of new S series digital cameras, which combine long zoom lenses with the ease of use of a point-and-shoot system. With this amalgam of characteristics in mind, the physical construction of these cameras incorporates balanced ergonomics along with impressive image quality to make these cameras ideal companions for working in a wide variety of situations, with a plethora of flexibility and control options.

FinePix HS50EXR

The Fujifilm FinePix HS50EXR is the new flagship model of the S series. It blends the largest sensor size of the group with the richest set of features that are reminiscent of the X series of Fujifilm cameras. The most noticeable characteristic of this camera, as with all S series models, is its inclusion of a super-long Fujinon 42x optical manual zoom lens, which covers a 35mm equivalent focal-length range of 24-1000mm. The reach of this lens suits photographing in nearly any situation, and the addition of lens-shift type image stabilization helps to produce clear, sharp imagery, even at great zoom magnifications. Also helping to improve image quality is the inclusion of aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements in the lens to reduce chromatic aberration and color fringing throughout the zoom range. A Super EBC (Electron Beam Coating) has also been applied to individual lens elements to further minimize surface reflections, lens flare, and ghosting, to promote images with higher contrast and color neutrality.

As for the imaging technology, a 16 megapixel 1/2” EXR CMOS II sensor and EXR Processor II are utilized in order to produce high-resolution still imagery with notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 12800. The sensor-and-processor combination also provide impressive speed to all aspects of the camera, including a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 11 fps, a startup time of 0.5 second, a shooting interval time of 0.5 second, and a fast autofocus time of 0.05 second. This expedited focusing performance is due to the incorporation of the innovative Intelligent Hybrid AF system, which utilizes both phase- and contrast-detection AF methods to acquire focus in both a precise and quick manner. Phase-detection focusing, a technology utilized in most DSLRs, offers increased focusing speeds, while the contrast method ensures critical focus based on the contrast detected between subjects. By employing both technologies, ensured focusing is possible no matter what the lighting conditions may be.

In regard to exposure metering, the sensor and processor also work together to form EXR Auto, which selects from up to 108 predetermined scene types to optimize the exposure settings and sensor performance to clearly and accurately depict scenes. EXR Auto intelligently determines the type of subject within the image, whether or not that subject is moving, if the subject is a person, and the type of setting in which the subject exists. Beyond this, Advanced Anti Blur can be applied to help minimize the likelihood of camera shake affecting the image, by recording a series of short exposures into a single frame. Furthermore, three distinct sensor modes can also be utilized depending on the type of imagery desired: HR (High Resolution) mode is biased for resolving the greatest amount of detail in the scene and producing accurate, vivid colors. DR (Dynamic Range) mode is ideal for difficult lighting conditions, and combines two exposures in a single frame to garner increased shadow and highlight detail. SN (High Sensitivity and Low Noise) mode is best suited for working in low light, and strives to produce imagery with decreased apparent noise and enhanced image clarity.

In addition to EXR Auto, a host of creative features can also be applied to images to enhance their appearance in-camera, for live viewing of the adjustments. One of the most noteworthy creative modes available is the array of Film Simulation modes. These modes are designed to replicate the look and feel of some of Fujifilm’s classic film types, including Provia, Astia and Velvia transparency films, as well as Pro negative films. A monochrome mode is also available, which can be further defined through the use of simulated yellow, red, and green contrast filters.

Aside from still imagery, the HS50EXR is also capable of recording Full HD 1080p video at 60 fps, for smooth and fluid rendition of movement. While recording movies, full-time continuous phase-detection autofocus is available and face-tracking AF can be utilized to maintain sharp focus on moving subjects. Still images can be recorded during filming, and a high-speed recording mode is also available, up to 480 fps, for detailed slow-motion playback.

For monitoring and composing imagery as well as playback and menu navigation, both a 3.0” 920k-dot rear LCD monitor and a 920k-dot electronic viewfinder are integrated into the camera to enable viewing in a number of ways. The 3.0” LCD features a vari-angle mechanism that enables it to swivel outward and tilt both upward and downward to suit working from a variety of angles. When working with the EVF, a built-in eye sensor automatically deactivates the larger monitor, and by shooting at eye-level, a third point of contact is created between yourself and the camera to increase overall stability. An easy-to-hold ergonomic grip offers both comfort and support of the camera for extended periods of time.

FinePix HS35EXR

The FinePix HS35EXR is similar to the HS50EXR, in many regards, and incorporates a number of the same technologies that enable it to produce impressive imagery in a simple and efficient package. It features a Fujinon 30x optical manual zoom lens, which has a 35mm equivalent focal-length range of 24-720mm and a maximum aperture of f/2.8-5.6. Sensor-shift type image stabilization benefits the reach of this lens by compensating for the appearance of camera shake, which can become increasingly noticeable with greater zoom magnifications. One aspherical and three extra-low dispersion elements are incorporated into the lens’s construction to help minimize aberrations and distortions, while also helping to improve overall image sharpness. A Super EBC coating has also been applied to lens elements to help reduce lens flare and ghosting and promote greater image contrast and light transmission.

A 16 megapixel 1/2” Back Side Illuminated EXR CMOS sensor and an EXR image processor are incorporated into the HS35EXR to produce high-resolution still imagery and Full HD 1080p video recording at 30 fps with notable low-light sensitivity to ISO 12800. As with the HS50EXR, EXR Auto modes are available to determine precise exposure settings intelligently, based on the scene in which you are working as well as from a palette of 103 predetermined unique available configurations. HR, DR, and SN sensor modes are available, too, for greater control over the intended look and feel of imagery, as are Film Simulation modes and Advanced Filters such as Pop Color, Toy Camera, Miniature, High-Key, Partial Color, Dynamic Tone, Low-Key, and Soft Focus. Additionally, the sensor-and-processor combination affords a wealth of speed across all camera functions, including eight full-resolution frames per second continuous shooting, 0.8 second startup time, and a 0.16 second focusing time.

For live view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation, both a 3.0” 460k-dot LCD monitor and a 920k-dot EVF can be used to best accommodate your technique. The rear LCD monitor features a tilting design that allows for positioning between 45° downward or 90° upward, so you can view more comfortably from high or low angles, and a 160-degree-wide viewing angle also enhances the visibility of the screen if you're working in brighter conditions. The EVF has a built-in eye sensor for automatic switching off of the larger LCD monitor, and it provides a third point of contact for greater stability.

FinePix SL1000

Containing the longest-reaching zoom lens of the S series is the FinePix SL1000, which incorporates an incredibly long Fujinon 50x optical zoom lens that provides a 35mm equivalent focal-length range of 24-1200mm, covering nearly any focal length needed to photograph in just about any situation. Lens-shift type image stabilization is available to help reduce the appearance of camera shake in the longer magnifications, and a Super-Macro mode is also available for shooting detailed close-up imagery. Aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements are integrated into the optical layout to help reduce aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range, and increase overall image sharpness.

Enhancing this expansive zoom lens is a 16.2 megapixel 1/2.3” Back Side Illuminated sensor, which can produce both impressive still imagery as well as Full HD 1080i video at 60 fps with low-light sensitivity to ISO 12800. In order to achieve precise and consistent exposure results, SR AUTO (Scene Recognition Auto) can be utilized to select from six pre-determined scene types—Portrait, Landscape, Night, Macro, Night Portrait, or Backlit Portrait—in order to garner optimal results in a variety of lighting conditions. Up to 10 full-resolution frames per second can be captured in continuous shooting mode; a startup time of 0.9 second and a focusing time of 0.2 second aid in recording fleeting and fast-moving subjects. Additionally, as with the HS50EXR and HS35EXR, this camera can record still imagery in a RAW or RAW+JPEG file format to allow for greater output and post-production control of image files.

Also similar to the previous two cameras, the SL1000 incorporates both a 3.0” LCD monitor as well as an electronic viewfinder, and both also have a screen resolution of 920k-dots. The LCD monitor features a tilting design to benefit shooting from high and low angles, and the EVF provides detailed viewing at eye-level that is especially useful when working in bright light.

FinePix S8400W and S8200

The FinePix S8400W and S8200 are identical cameras, regarding their imaging and performance features, both are apt bridge-style point-and-shoot cameras with a wealth of versatility and control features. One of the differences that separates the two models is the inclusion of built-in wireless connectivity in the S8400W. This added feature permits instant transferring and sharing of images directly to Android and iOS mobile devices. By using the Fujifilm Camera App on either mobile system, you can browse the files on the camera and transfer up to 30 images at a time between the camera and mobile device. This connectivity also provides an automatic backup service to your home PC through the use of the included Fujifilm PC AutoSave software.

Aside from the wireless abilities of the S8400W, the other key difference between these two cameras is their built-in zoom lens. The S8400W features a Fujinon 44x optical zoom lens, which provides a 35mm equivalent focal-length range of 24-1056mm, while the S8200 has a Fujinon 40x optical zoom lens that gives a 35mm equivalent focal-length range of 24-960mm. Lens-shift image stabilization benefits both expansive zoom ranges by compensating for the appearance of camera shake, while the inclusion of both aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements also helps to improve image quality throughout the wide-angle to super-telephoto range of the lens. Super-Macro mode can be used for creative close-up imagery, and Intelligent Digital Zoom is also available to effectively double the zoom magnification to 88x and 80x, respectively, with minimal image degradation.

In terms of imaging performance, both cameras also utilize a 16 megapixel 1/2.3” Back Side Illuminated CMOS sensor to produce imagery that exhibits fine detail with notable low-light sensitivity and quality. Fast camera performance is afforded throughout different functions of the camera, including a 1 second startup time, 0.3 second focusing time, 0.5 second shooting-interval time, and a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 10 fps. In addition to still image recording, Full HD 1080i video recording is also supported up to 60 fps for fluid movement rendition. Alternatively, high-speed movie shooting is also possible at up to 480 fps for slow-motion playback. Six-scene SR AUTO is available to select exposure settings optimally, based on the type of scene you are photographing, and six different Advanced Filter, Motion Panorama 360, and 3D Shooting modes can also be utilized for in-camera creative enhancement to imagery.

The design of both cameras maintains the same form factor as the other members of the S series, and includes a 3.0” 460k-dot LCD monitor as well as a 201k-dot EVF that can be used to lend extra stability when shooting handheld, and serves as a better means for viewing in bright light. Another convenience that both cameras share is their AA-battery power source, an easily replaceable and plentiful source of power that is readily available while traveling.

FinePix S6800

Differing from the previous cameras, the FinePix S6800, which is available in black, white, or red, is a bridge-style point-and-shoot camera that forgoes the inclusion of an electronic viewfinder in order to create a smaller, more portable form factor with similar imaging performance. This camera integrates a Fujinon 30x optical zoom lens into its design, which provides a 35mm equivalent focal-length range of 24-720mm. This zoom lens is enhanced by sensor-shift image stabilization that helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake to produce sharper overall imagery. Additionally, aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements are included in the lens construction to correct for a variety of aberrations and distortions in order to render imagery clearly and consistently. The zoom range can also be effectively doubled through the use of Intelligent Digital Zoom, which increases the magnification to 60x with minimal loss in image quality.

The S6800 incorporates a 16.2 megapixel Back Side Illuminated CMOS sensor into its design to produce high-resolution still imagery with a native sensitivity up to ISO 12800. The sensor also works to enable fast continuous shooting, up to 8 fps, as well as Full HD 1080i video recording at 60 fps. SR AUTO can be employed when recording either stills or video, and will intelligently determine exposure settings based on one of six pre-determined scene modes. By working in these modes, camera settings will be optimized to properly render scenes that fit within these profiles in an accurate and descriptive way. For previewing the effects of exposure adjustments and reviewing imagery once it has been recorded, there is a 3.0” 460k-dot LCD monitor.

FinePix S4800

The final new release for the current Fujifilm S series of bridge-style point-and-shoots is the FinePix S4800, which integrates a 16 megapixel 1/2.3” CCD sensor to produce well-detailed stills and HD 720p video recording at 30 fps. The Fujinon 30x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm equivalent focal-length range of 24-720mm to suit working in almost any environment, and sensor-shift image stabilization helps to maintain consistently sharp results by minimizing the appearance of camera shake in photographs. As with the S6800, the S4800 also does not incorporate an electronic viewfinder into its design, in favor of producing a smaller-sized body for increased portability. A 3.0” 230k-dot LCD monitor is available for live-view monitoring, image playback, and menu navigation for applying a range of available camera settings such as SR AUTO or other Scene Position modes for fine-tuning exposure settings based on the specific type of scene in which you are working.

We purchased a FUJIFILM Finepix S and trying to see if we can get a bigger lens.  We now have a Super EBC Fujinon Lens and was trying to see if I can remove it to see if I can add another lens.
