Hands-On Review: Canon EOS-M Mirrorless Camera

Canon's new EOS-M represents the company's first foray into the world of large-sensor mirrorless cameras. The compact EOS-M features an 18 Mp APS-C sensor (the same one that's in the Rebel T4i DSLR), and it comes with a wide-angle 22mm f/2.8 STM lens with a stepping motor for continuous, quiet autofocus that's especially helpful when shooting 1080p video. That pancake lens features the Canon's EF-M mount type, which is new for the EOS M.

In this review, Larry Becker of Kelby Media finds a lot to like in the mirrorless camera. The EOS-M offers professional image quality in a small package. The large APS-C sensor will enable you to achieve shallow depth of field in your photos, while the camera's low-light performance will give you useful results up to a relatively high 6400 ISO (12800 is the highest native ISO). Helpful auto modes keep the camera approachable for beginners, and the touch-screen menu allows enthusiasts and pros to tweak settings exactly the way they want.
