Manfrotto Hobbyist Tripods

Share

There comes a time in every newbie photographer’s life when they need a camera support that goes beyond the limitations of Lego™-like tablepods, and that’s where Manfrotto’s new 290-series Hobbyist tripods come into the picture.

Based on Manfrotto’s popular 190-series tripods, the new Manfrotto 293 (designed for point-and-shoot and lighter compact DSLRs) and wider-gauge Manfrotto 294 (designed for heftier midrange DSLRs) are available with a choice of a three-way, quick-release (QR) pan/tilt head, QR ball head or as legs only. Manfrotto 290-series tripods feature all-aluminum construction with polymer fittings, a choice of three- or four-section legs (Manfrotto 293-series kit only), and an anti-shock collar that protects your camera from accidental damage due to impact. Regardless of the number of leg sections they feature, they all support a load capacity of 8 lb (Manfrotto 293) to 11 lb (Manfrotto 294).

Manfrotto 293 Series Tripods

The Manfrotto 290 lineup includes six kits (tripod and head): two three-section models, one with a QR ball head and one with a QR three-way pan/tilt head and two four-section compact models, one with a QR ball head and the other with a QR three-way pan/tilt head.

The three-section Manfrotto MK293A3-A3RC1 is bundled with a detachable, three way aluminum quick-release head that with the flip of a switch can be optimized for shooting stills or video. The MK293A3-A3RC1 has an anti-shock collar, a maximum height of 61.7" (156.7cm) with the center column fully extended and a minimum working height of 54.2" (137.7cm) with the center column in its lowest position. When not in use, the MK293A3-A3RC1 folds up to a tidy 25" (63.4cm) and weighs 3.9 lb (1.8 kg).

If you’re looking for a similarly configured tripod but in a shorter package, check out the four-section Manfrotto MK293A4-A3RC1 Compact tripod, which folds down to an even tidier 20.6" (52.3cm) and features the same detachable, three way aluminum quick-release head found on Manfrotto’s MK293A3-A3RC1. The compact MK293A4-A3RC1 has a maximum height of 58.1" (147.6cm) with the center column fully extended or 50.6" (128.6cm) when the center column is lowered.

For those who prefer ball heads, Manfrotto offers MK293A3-A0RC2, which has the same three-section configuration and attributes as the Manfrotto MK293A3-A3RC1, but is coupled with a quick release ball head. The MK293A3-A0RC2 weighs 3.7 lb (1.7 kg), has a maximum height of 62" (157.6cm) with the center column fully extended, and 54.6" (138.6cm) with the center column in its lowered position. Fully collapsed, the MK293A3-A0RC2 measures 25.3" (64.3cm).

A compact QR ball head model, the four-section Manfrotto MK293A4-A0RC2, shares the same attributes as its three-section sibling, but with a maximum height of 58.1" (147.6cm) with its center column fully extended and 50.6" (128.6cm) with the center column in its lowered position. Fully collapsed, the MK293A4-A0RC2 measures 20.6" (52.3cm) and weighs 3.7 lb (1.7 kg).

All four of Manfrotto’s 290-series tripods feature solid, stable construction and are optimally designed for use with point and shoot, superzoom and lighter weight compact DSLRs.

If you already own the head of your dreams, the Manfrotto 293 can also be purchased without a head (MT293A3), with a maximum height of 58.7” (149cm), a minimum height of 14.5” (36.7cm), and weighs 3.3 lb (1.5 kg). An anti-shock collar is standard on all MK393-series tripods as is a three-faced center column, which prevents your camera from swiveling off-axis while on the job.

The Manfrotto MK294A3-D3RC2 comes with a three way, quick-release pan/tilt head, has a maximum height of 5.93' (1.81 m), folds down to 2.36' (72cm), and weighs 5.62 lb ((2.55 kg). If you already own the head of your dreams, the Manfrotto 294 can also be purchased without a head (MT294A3), and has a maximum height of 66.5" (169cm), a minimum height of 15.6" (39.7cm), and weighs 4.2 lb (1.9 kg). An anti-shock collar is standard on all MK394-series tripods, as is a three-faced center column, which prevents your camera from swiveling off-axis while on the job.

Manfrotto MK294 Series Monopods (3- and 4-Section)

For those who prefer using monopods, Manfrotto also has a pair of 294 series monopods, which are available in a choice of three- and four-section models. The three-section Manfrotto MM294A3 folds down to 23.2" (59cm) while the four-section MM294A4 folds down to a more compact 19.3" (49cm). Minimum height aside, both versions have a maximum height of 59.4" (151cm), and weight 1.2 lb (5 kg).

Manfrotto 294 series monopods do not include a head. We strongly recommend a Manfrotto 222 Joystick Head, which is an intuitively ideal mate for use with monopods.
