Marshall 7-Inch High-Resolution Field Monitor
The monitors built into digital cameras and camcorders have been improved dramatically. Some are now more than three inches in size. But that’s still too small for most professionals, so they use camera-top field monitors to judge the quality of high-resolution digital stills and HD video. The Marshall V-LCD70XP-HDMIPT is a 7-inch field monitor loaded with new features such as HDMI Loop-Through and DSLR Ratio Adjustment.
Made in the USA, the Marshall V-LCD70XP-HDMIPT monitor offers more than four times the screen space of a 3-inch display, making it much easier to critique captured images. The display has a native resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, luminance of 450 cd/m², a contrast ratio of 600:1, manual gamma adjustment, adjustable backlight and markers, a scratch-resistant protective screen and four user-configurable buttons on the front panel. The display has a viewing angle of 140 degrees horizontal and 100 degrees vertical, and an Image Flip feature allows the unit to be mounted upside down, if necessary. The monitor is 7.03 inches wide by 5.67 inches high by 2.17 inches deep and it weighs about 1.9 pounds.
Inputs on the V-LCD70XP-HDMIPT include one composite, one component and one HDMI. Integrated loop-through technology for all three inputs, including HDMI, allows the field monitor’s input to be passed along to another monitor so that other people involved in the production process can view the material. This eliminates the need to split the input signal, along with the equipment and additional power sources required to do so.
A new feature called DSLR Ratio Adjustment lets you scale a DSLR’s video output so that it fills the display, thus eliminating black pillar bars. You can select from Normal, 3:2, 16:9 and Full Screen modes, and the feature can be programmed to one of the four preset buttons on the front panel for fast access.
A False Color Filter helps the user select the proper camera exposure by changing colors in the image according to luminance or brightness values. As the user adjusts the camera iris, properly exposed objects will appear in shades of pink and green, while overexposed areas show up in red and underexposed areas show up in blue. A Peaking Filter helps the user obtain a sharp focus. When the Peaking Filter is activated, a black-and-white image is displayed, with red fringes showing up where sharp edges appear. The user simply adjusts the focus so that red fringes appear in areas where a sharp focus is most important.
The V-LCD70XP-HDMIPT monitor features a 4-pin XLR power jack. The monitor is also available in bundles that include different battery adapters. You can get it with an Anton/Bauer battery adapter, a Canon battery adapter, a JVC battery adapter, a Panasonic PM battery adapter, a Panasonic PV battery adapter, a Sony B Series battery adapter, a Sony M Series battery adapter, a Sony L Series battery adapter and a V-Mount battery adapter. The battery adapters can be swapped easily by the user.
