New from Leica at photokina: 4K Medium Format, 35mm Film Camera + More

Share

The award for Most Items Announced in One Day at the 2014 photokina Imaging Fair goes to… Leica! If this award did exist, the respected camera maker from Wetzlar, Germany, would be the hands-down winner and, fortunately, it’s not just the sheer volume of announcements that is impressive. Leica has introduced new and updated cameras and lenses across its widening range of formats, including two medium format S cameras, a new M-mount film camera, V-Lux, D-Lux, and X-series compact camera updates, and several new lenses for M cameras and for their T mirrorless system.

Leica S (Typ 007), Front

Leica S (Typ 007) Medium Format DSLR

The new Leica S (Typ 007) Medium Format DSLR Camera  significantly updates the Typ 006 version with the addition of a 37.5MP 30 x 45mm CMOS sensor and the Maestro II image processor. The change from CCD to CMOS sensor enables faster performance, higher ISO sensitivity to 6400 as well as 4K and Full HD video capture. The sensor omits the optical low-pass filter for heightened clarity and precise details. The autofocus system provides one central cross-type sensor with single and predictive continuous autofocus and manual focus override. Continuous shooting reaches a maximum speed of 3.5 fps and its focal plane shutter provides shutter speeds up to 1/4000 of a second. Its longest shutter speed is 125 seconds and it is compatible with the central shutters on Leica CS lenses.

Leica S (Typ 007), Top

New to the S-series is video recording, and the S Typ 007 jumps in with DCI 4K and Full HD along with a Super 35 crop mode. Frame rates are available up to 60 fps and the S Typ 007 features 4:2:2 color sampling. A built-in stereo microphone and 3.5mm headphone and microphone jacks are supported; clean video can be recorded on external recorders via HDMI output. Focus peaking provides assistance for precision focusing; a histogram with clipping and a digital horizon and settings information are all available on the live view.

The pentaprism viewfinder offers 98% coverage and illuminated LCD information, while the 3.0" TFT LCD monitor has 921,600 pixels for clear, bright viewing, and utilizes Corning Gorilla Glass for longevity. A hot shoe for external flash and flash sync port are supported, maximum sync speed with the focal plane shutter is 1/125 second and, with central shutter lenses, is 1/1000 second. Image transfer is provided via USB 3.0 interface or with the camera’s built-in Wi-Fi, which also enables remote control from a smartphone or tablet. An Adobe Lightroom software download is included with camera purchase.

Leica S (Typ 007), Rear

Physically, the camera is made durable for extensive use outside the studio, including a magnesium-alloy body and top plate, anti-slip rubberized grip, and dust and water seals. Its form factor, which closely resembles the typical DSLR shape, is compact for a medium format camera and its menu navigation is simplified, thanks to an intuitive joystick-based control design. A dual card slot is compatible with SDXC and CF memory cards.

Leica S-E (Typ 006), Front

Leica S-E (Typ 006) Medium Format DSLR

The S-E Medium (Typ 006) Format DSLR Camera  is strikingly similar to the previous S model with a re-branded S-E moniker. It features the 37.5MP 45 x 30mm CCD sensor with micro lenses and also omits the optical low-pass filter for optimized details. Like the new S, it is compatible with all Leica S-type lenses and houses a dual SF and CD card slot. ISO sensitivity runs from 100-1600, continuous shooting speed is 1.5 fps up to 28 consecutive RAW images and shutter speed maxes out at 1/400 of a second. Its phase-detect autofocus system features one central cross-type sensor and manual-focus override. A pentaprism-type viewfinder provides stable eye-level composition with camera information, a top plate OLED displays settings info and a 3.0" TFT LCD with 921,600 pixel resolution is available for image playback. A hot-shoe mount for external flash and other accessories is provided and a flash sync socket, HDMI jack, USB 2.0 jack, and contact bar for the Multifunction Handgrip S are also supported.

Leica M-A Rangefinder Camera

Returning to its roots, Leica takes the recent retro fad to its logical conclusion with the release of the analog Leica M-A Rangefinder Camera, in Black or Silver models. This fully mechanical body without a built-in light meter operates without the need for a battery and, therefore, distinguishes itself from the Leica MP, which has a light meter. Compatible with M lenses from 16mm to 135mm, it provides a large, bright-line frame viewfinder with automatic parallax compensation. Paired frame lines of 28 and 90mm, 35 and 135mm and 50 and 75mm are automatically activated when the lens is attached, and can be manually set. Depending on the focal length, the actual image captured on film extends slightly outside the frame lines.

Leica M-A, Silver, Front

Leica M-A, Black, Rear

Manual shutter speed and aperture settings are based on readings from an external exposure meter or based on good old-fashioned experience. A mechanically controlled rubber blanket slotted shutter with horizontal movement provides smooth, very low-noise shutter action. A rear-panel indicator sets film sensitivity from 6 to 6400 ISO. The M-A’s all-metal body, with chromed brass top and bottom plates, has mechanical wind and rewind levers and is compatible with Leicavit M and can be motorized using Leica Motor-M, Leica Winder-M, Leica Winder M4-P, or Leica Winder M4-2. A roll of Tri-X 400 film is included.

Leica X Digital Compact Camera

Back to the digital world, Leica has updated several of its fixed-lens camera lines with improved models. The Leica X (Typ 113) Digital Compact Camera with Summilux 23mm f/1.7 ASPH Lens is available in Black or Silver, with brown leatherette version, and features a 16.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor. Its fast-aperture lens provides the 35mm focal-length equivalent of a 35mm lens for moderate wide-angle perspectives, ideal for street photography and day-to-day versatile shooting. The f/1.7 maximum aperture is very effective in low light and enables shallow depth-of-field control for gorgeous imaging with precise focus and lovely blurred backgrounds. Its minimum focus distance is 11.8".

ISO sensitivity on the X runs to 12500 and shutter speed to 1/2000 of a second. Continuous shooting speed is 5 fps up to 7 exposures in RAW + JPEG mode. Full HD 1080p video is supported at 30 fps and its 3.0" LCD with 920k-dot resolution provides composition and playback viewing. The camera records to SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards and features a hot-shoe mount. Manual, Aperture-priority, and automatic camera controls are supported and the focus ring and lens provide a fast switch-over. These compact cameras reflect the look and build of classic Leica rangefinder cameras with simple menu controls, and come weighing just over 1 lb, for convenient and comfortable control. Optional leather and canvas Ever Ready cases have also been announced for the Leica X, as well as handsome canvas and leather half-case protectors and Brown canvas and leather neck straps.

Leica X-E Digital Compact Camera

With a particularly stylish and very compact design, the X-E (Typ 102) Digital Compact Camera with Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 ASPH Lens offers the same technical specs as the Leica X2, but in a gorgeous titanium-colored, all-metal body. Its 16.2MP APS-C sensor is complemented by the wide-angle lens with a 35mm focal-length equivalency and f/2.8 maximum aperture. ISO sensitivity reaches 12500 and continuous shooting speed maxes at 5 fps. A 2.7" TFT LCD with 230K-dot resolution and 100% coverage provides image composition and playback, and images are stored to SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards. Video is not supported by the X-E, as it is designed strictly to be a fast, almost silent and lightweight still camera. An Adobe Lightroom download is included with purchase of the X-E.

Leica D-LUX Digital Camera

The updated D-LUX (Typ 109) Digital Camera is a do-everything camera and features a large 12.8MP 4/3" High Sensitivity MOS sensor and the Leica DC Vario-Summicron zoom lens. Its predecessor utilized a 1/1.7" sensor, and the increased size translates to impressive clarity and color representation from a point-and-shoot camera. Its upgrade also includes improved 4K video capture and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The lens on the D-LUX provides a 35mm focal length equivalence of 24-75mm for a versatile range of wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives. Its fast maximum aperture is f/1.7 at the wide-angle end and f/2.8 at the telephoto end and this will provide low-light capability and shallow depth-of-field control. Its minimum focus distance at wide-angle macro is just 1.0". Optical Image Stabilization is supported for controlling the blur caused by camera shake and ISO sensitivity runs to 12500, expandable to 25000. For grabbing fast-paced action, the burst-shooting rate reaches 40 fps with the electronic shutter.

4K video capture is supported at 3840 x 2160 pixels at 30p or 24p fps. Smaller resolution and PAL format capture are also supported. A 3.0" 921k-dot TFT LCD monitor provides bright playback and composition and an electronic viewfinder with eye sensor is also available for stable eye-level composition.

Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity enable instant wireless sharing of images while shooting and remote control of camera shutter and settings from a smartphone or tablet. SD, SDHC, and SDXC media are supported and Micro HDMI and USB ports and a hot-shoe mount are provided on this sturdy all-metal body camera. A Leica CF D flash unit is included with the camera and a free download of Adobe Lightroom is provided, as well.

The Handgrip for Leica D-LUX (Typ 109) Digital Cameras is an optional accessory available to improve handling and stability with this compact camera. It screws into the tripod thread and has a relatively large, comfortable grip for the right hand and adds a bit of protection to the camera’s base. The Auto Lens Cap for D-LUX (Typ 109) Digital Cameras is an optional alternate lens cap that stays on the camera and automatically opens when the camera is turned on. It means one less step when preparing to shoot, and one less object to potentially lose. A Leather Camera Jacket Case for D LUX (Typ 109) Digital Cameras offers a stylish cognac color and provides a durable base that remains on the camera, a top plate, and lens cover that is removed when shooting. Also a leather wrist strap, leather neck strap and Twist with Wrist Strap are available for the D-LUX.

Leica V-LUX Digital Camera

The V-LUX (Typ 114) Digital Camera is a camera designed for any level of shooter and its versatile lens, with a 25-400mm focal-length equivalence, is testimony to its all-inclusive applications. A 1" 20.1MP sensor provides high-resolution imaging and effective low-light capture with ISO sensitivities expandable to 25000. Like the D-LUX, the new V-LUX features a much larger sensor than its predecessor, the V-LUX 4.

At the wide end of its lens’s focal length, an f/2.8 aperture allows shallow depth-of-field control and in combination with its optical image stabilization, clear rendition in dim lighting and at extended telephoto focal lengths. AF macro mode provides a minimum focus distance of 1" and precise manual focus is achievable with a smooth focus ring. The AF speed on the D-LUX is notable for a point-and-shoot, particularly at the telephoto end of the focal range where AF tends to hunt for focus. Its maximum mechanical shutter speed is 1/4000 of a second and reaches 1/16000 using the electronic shutter.

4K (3840 x 2160) video is supported at 30 fps and 1080p full HD at 60 and 30 fps with a built-in stereo microphone and an external microphone jack for better-quality audio. In addition, a 2.5mm remote jack, USB 2.0, and Micro HDMI ports are provided. SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards are supported and built-in Wi-Fi and NFC enable wireless image transfer to computers and smart devices, as well as remote camera control from smartphones and tablets.

A 0.39" OLED electronic viewfinder with 2,360k-dot resolution and auto eye sensor, as well as a 3.0" tilting LCD with 920k-dot resolution, provide composition and playback viewing. A pop-up flash throws additional light on your subject when needed and the DSLR-like form factor offers a large, comfortable handgrip and easy access to its ergonomically placed controls. An optional leather neck strap has also been announced for the V-LUX.

Leica Summarit-M Lenses

Leica has expanded its lineup of M-mount manual focus prime lenses with four updated Summarit models. Each of these lenses is an update of an already existing focal length and features a slightly faster maximum aperture of f/2.4, improved optical performance, and lighter, more compact all-metal barrels than their predecessors. They have six-bit coding that identifies the lens for select M cameras, providing viewfinder frame lines; lens information is stored in image metadata that can be applied later to software corrections. The 75mm and 90mm lenses offer closer focusing distances and each lens includes a metal lens hood and lens cap.

Summarit-M 35mm f/2.4 ASPH Lens

The Summarit-M 35mm f/2.4 ASPH lens offers a moderate wide-angle perspective with a minimum focus distance of 31". Its f/2.4 maximum aperture is effective in low light, aspherical elements reduce aberrations and, with a 9-blade diaphragm, shallow depth-of-field images will demonstrate pleasing out-of-focus highlights. The filter thread is 46mm and it’s available in Silver or Black.

Summarit-M 50mm f/2.4 Lens

Also available in Silver or Black models, the Summarit-M 50mm f/2.4 lens provides a standard focal length with a minimum focus distance of 31". A bit lighter than the 35mm, it too has 9 aperture blades and a 46mm filter thread. Like all the new Summarits, it features 6 lens elements in 4 groups.

Summarit-M 75mm f/2.4 Lens

The Summarit-M 75mm f/2.4 lens is slightly lighter than its predecessor and provides an improved minimum focus distance, down to 27.6". A short telephoto lens, it is apt for portraiture and utilizes an 11-blade aperture design. Like the others, the Summarit-M 75mm is available in Silver or Black.

Summarit-M 90mm f/2.4 Lens

The Summarit-M 90mm f/2.4 lens is also considered a short telephoto lens, applicable for portrait work, as well as telephoto photojournalism, with its fast maximum aperture. Its minimum focus distance is 35" and it, too, has a 46mm filter thread and is available in Silver and Black.

Leica Summilux-M 35mm/f1.4 ASPH and Leica Noctilux-M 50 mm/f0.95 ASPH

Leica has also introduced Silver versions of two of its more popular manual focus M-mount lenses, the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH and the Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH lenses. The Silver versions are identical to the current Black models, even down to their anodized finish and weight. The Silver 35mm f/1.4 has an aperture range of f/1.4 to 16, the maximum f/1.4 enabling quality low-light capture and shallow depth-of-field control. Nine optical elements in five groups, including one aspherical element and a floating element group, control aberrations and provide notably sharp imaging. Six-bit coding transfers lens information to the camera.

The Silver Noctilux 50mm f/0.95 offers a standard prime focal length and the notably wide maximum aperture of f/0.95. Five partial dispersion lenses, three high-refractive elements, two aspherical elements, and a rear element floating design minimize aberrations and distortion and provide exceptional clarity. Six-bit coding is supported and the metal barrel features an extendable lens hood and 60mm filter thread.

T-Mount Mirrorless System Lenses

The relatively new Leica T Mirrorless system doubled its ranks with the announcement of two zoom lenses to go along with its standard zoom and wide-angle prime. The new wide-angle zoom Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-T 11-23mm/f3.5-4.5 ASPH corresponds to a 17-35mm focal length in the full-frame format. It is a sophisticated autofocus lens with full-time manual focus override and 7.9" minimal focus distance. Four aspherical lens elements in the optical design contribute to image quality and the black, all-metal barrel features a 67mm non-rotatable filter mount. And finally, the telephoto zoom, with 35mm focal-length equivalency of 80-200mm, was announced. The Leica APO-Vario-Elmar-T 55-135mm / f3.5-4.5 ASPH lens provides autofocus to these familiar sets of tele-zoom focal lengths in a compact all-metal build with one aspherical element, a 3.3' minimum focal distance, and 60mm filter thread.
