Beep, beep, beep... that's the sound of the Nikon truck backing up to the loading dock at B&H, delivering the wealth of new cameras that Nikon is introducing for the 2015 shooting season. In addition to a D810 DSLR specifically reëngineered for astrophotography and a D750 Filmmakers Kit, Nikon has also announced nine new COOLPIX point-and-shoot cameras that are sure to please every type of shooter. And don’t forget the many new accessories that complement the use of this impressive new crop of cameras.

D810A DSLR

The Nikon D810A DSLR Camera is Nikon’s first DSLR dedicated to long-exposure, deep-sky astrophotography. Optimizing the D810 DSLR and its 36.3MP FX full-frame sensor, the D810A enables high-resolution images of H-alpha emission nebulae and other celestial objects, as well as the capturing faint star systems and star-trail images. The D810, with its high-resolution sensor, omitted low-pass filter and low-noise ISO sensitivity up to 12800, is the ideal camera to photograph distant, and at times, impossible-to-see objects in the night sky. Also, its magnesium-alloy build and shutter, tested to 200,000 cycles, give it the durability and longevity to withstand high-volume outdoor shooting.

The specialized modifications on the D810A include an Infrared filter optimized for H-alpha red tones, which results in four times the sensitivity to the 656nm wavelength than the standard D810. In addition, the camera’s electronic front curtain eliminates internal vibrations for minimized blur when shooting long exposures. Virtual Exposure Preview helps you frame your image when in BULB or Time Mode and the Long Exposure M Mode enables exposures up to 15 minutes (900 seconds). You can create beautiful light trails shooting an unlimited quantity of high-quality JPEG images when using CH or CL Release Modes, with a shutter speed slower than four seconds. With the Interval Timer you can take up to 9,999 photos at any shutter speed to create smooth in-camera time-lapse sequences. A 12-bit uncompressed RAW size S* file is supported for faster image transfer without sacrificing image quality.

Whether sitting on a fixed tripod, equatorial mount, connected to a telescope, or even tethered to a laptop, the D810A is perfectly suited for capturing the night sky. Also, optional third-party software is available for impressive time-lapse work, and Nikon’s free Capture NX-D software with Astro Noise Reduction filter eliminates pixel artifacts without sacrificing stars. The new AN-DC16 Strap for the Nikon D810A has also been released to go with this impressive camera.

The New D750 Filmmaker's Kit

The Nikon D750 Filmmaker's Kit is the perfect combination of gear for high-definition video production. The D750 is quickly becoming recognized as one of the best DSLRs for moviemaking, and with this grouping of fast-aperture prime lenses, an external recorder, microphone and accessories, Nikon has put together a package that will serve a savvy filmmaker for years to come. The kit includes the D750 DSLR, the AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G ED lens, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G lens, the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G lens, the ME-1 Stereo Microphone, the Atomos Ninja 2 Video Recorder, two EN-EL15 Lithium-Ion batteries58mm, and 67mm Variable Neutral Density filters and the HC-E1 HDMI cable. A Vari-Angle LCD allows clear composition from odd angles and bright image playback; and a built-in flash lets you light up your darkened subjects.

Target Finding AF helps you get complex shots the first time by instantly and accurately determining your intended subject and maintaining focus on it. Video is supported at 1080i at 60 fps and a four-axis Hybrid Vibration Reduction keeps your videos smooth and stable. Creative effects and 18 scene modes are available for stills and video and in-camera time-lapse movies can be created.

I plan to go  online shopping soon!  It's amazing how Nikon can keep coming up with more ways and cameras to meet everyone's level of expertise in the photography world. Thank you Nikon!  The 810A, P610 and AW130 will be coming home with me soon.

What will everyday/non-asto photos look like with the D810A?

We can't say with any certainty at this point what they may look like. Nikon's not addressed the topic necessarily.  My hunch is that the images will have a reddish hue to them and may require an IR cut filter to compensate, but that is just an uneducated assumption at this point.  Its a camera designed for a specific purpose, so my guess is using it as a regular camera may be possible, but may require more editing than one prefers to get normal shots out of.  If non-astronomy shots are going to be a requirement, I'd suggest considering getting a regular D810 or D750.  Hopefully in the near future Nikon will be releasing more technical data on the camera for us to regard.

Boo Nikon! None of the point-n-shoots (aside from the rugged model) go larger than f/3...those sensors better be **** good at noise reduction for the sky high ISOs they'll be using.
