Unveiled: Fit 4K in your Pocket with Samsung's NX500 Mirrorless Camera

Share

Providing users with an exceptionally compact unit without sacrificing the quality found in its top-end NX1, Samsung has announced the NX500 Mirrorless Digital Camera, complete with 4K video, a 28.2-megapixel APS-C back side illuminated CMOS sensor, and the powerful DRIMe V Image Processor. The NX500 sits in the middle of Samsung’s NX-mount mirrorless camera lineup and has numerous features that advance it well beyond its predecessors.

This palm-sized camera leverages the combined power and capabilities of the DRIMe V and the BSI CMOS sensor to produce high-resolution images with low noise at sensitivities up to ISO 25600, or 51200 in expanded mode. Also, this combination enables one of the most significant features, DCI 4K video recording at 24 fps. With four times the resolution of standard full HD (which is supported up to 60 fps), the NX500 utilizes the HEVC (H.265) compression that uses just half the space of H.264, while still providing excellent detail.

Another inherited feature is the NX Autofocus System III, with 205 phase detection points and 153 cross-type points, which enable high-speed, accurate autofocusing. Also, there are 209 contrast-detection points for fine-tuning focus during critical shots. The combination results in fast focusing and sharp imagery in a variety of lighting conditions. The camera’s speed can also be seen in the continuous shooting rate of 9 fps and a low-resolution burst mode of up to 30 fps. Additionally, it has a maximum shutter speed of 1/6000 second.

Handling has been improved with the implementation of two command dials, one on the front and one on the back, as well as a 3.0" 1036k-dot tilting touchscreen AMOLED screen that can flip up 180°. A Hybrid UI allows for intuitive control over settings and image review. Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity with NFC enables connection to mobile devices and instant sharing of images and video, while Bluetooth allows for constant connection for data, such as GPS coordinates to be tagged in your images.

Samsung Auto Shot is included as a useful feature in the NX500, and works by tracking subject matter at 240 fps and then automatically capturing the image when the action is at its peak. There are three types available: Baseball, Group Jump, and Trap Shot. Baseball will trigger the shutter when a batter makes contact with a pitch, group jump snaps a photo when everyone is in the air, and trap shot is set off when an object comes into the frame, such as a racecar crossing a finish line.

The NX500 comes with the 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 Power Zoom ED OIS Lens and it will be available in Black, Brown, or White.

Hi,

Will this "Auto Shot" mentioned in the artical, work with a Dragon Fly landing on a flower?

Sincerely,

Mike

The "Auto Shot" feature has 3 modes, and of the 3 the trap-shot mode (designed to take an shot when subject enters the frame) would be the closest mode to capture that type of event.

I think is a very good camera .I'm very satisfied with all the Samsung divices I have

I do not see any mention of exposure braketing or HDR.  Does the camera have these capabilities?

Denny

Yes, you can do exposure bracketing and there is a 1 step HDR mode that the use can select Low, Med, High which sets the intensity of the HDR effect.

I want one

Outstanding camera by the review!!! I still wish there was a viewfinder.  I need reading glasses to look at anything up close and it's too cumbersome to take photos with reading glasses. The viewfinder on my other camera allows me to see the object clearly and without distractions you'd have with the LCD/LED 3 in display.
