Unveiled: New Photo and Cine Lenses from Rokinon
Rokinon has announced several new manual focus lenses for both still photography and HD video capture. Starting with the photo lenses, there is the new second-generation 8mm f/2.8 for mirrorless cameras, a 10mm f/2.8 lens for mirrorless and APS-C format DSLR cameras, and a 12mm f/2.0 lens for mirrorless cameras. Also for photo are new Sony E and Micro Four Thirds mounts for existing 24mm f/1.4 and a 35mm f/1.4 lenses. The Cine lenses include a new 8mm T3.1 for mirrorless mounts and a 14mm T1.5, 24mm T1.5, 35 T1.5, and an 85mm T1.5 for Micro Four Thirds.
8mm f/2.8 UMC Fish-Eye II
The 8mm f/2.8 UMC Fish-Eye II lens is the second generation of this popular lens for mirrorless cameras. It offers a 12mm focal length equivalency (12.8mm for Canon M) in the 35mm format with an 180° angle of view and a minimum focus distance of 1'. Two aspherical elements and three ED elements minimize aberrations and create clear, high contrast and color-accurate images. A built-in petal-shaped lens hood helps to deflect stray light and protects the front element. The lens's mirrorless mounts include Canon EF-M mount, Fujifilm X mount, Samsung NX mount, and Sony E mount.
10mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS CS
The 10mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS CS lens distinguishes itself from the other new releases because it is presented for mirrorless and DSLR (APS-C) mounts. Considered a high-performance wide-angle lens with a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture and rectilinear image format, it is suggested not just for landscapes and tight interiors but also for sports and photojournalistic applications. Its 35mm focal length equivalence is 15mm on APS-C format cameras, 16mm on Canon APS-C cameras, and 20mm on Micro Four Thirds cameras. Its minimum focus distance is 9.4" and with one Extra-low Dispersion and two aspherical elements, aberrations are controlled. A nano-crystal anti-reflection coating system (NCS) is applied evenly on the inner surface of one lens element to improve light transmission and reduce the reflections that cause ghosting and flare. The Nikon F mount version of this lens provides automatic exposure capability in A/S/M and P modes. Additionally, the lens is available in Canon EF, Pentax K, Sony A, Canon EF-M, Fujifilm X, Samsung NX, Sony E, and Micro Four Thirds mounts.
12mm f/2.0 NCS CS
Made just for mirrorless mounts is the new 12mm f/2.0 NCS CS lens. It is available in Canon EF-M, Fujifilm X, Samsung NX, Sony E and Micro Four Thirds mounts. Its 35mm focal length equivalency for MFT cameras is 24mm, for Canon M cameras it is 19.2mm, and for the other three mounts, 18mm. With an f/2.0 maximum aperture, it is particularly effective in low-light capture and can control shallow depth of field for precise subject focus with pleasing out-of-focus backgrounds. It offers a minimum focus distance of 7.9". The lens’s impressive optical construction consists of three Extra-low Dispersion elements, one aspherical, and one hybrid aspherical element. The nano-crystal coating is applied to the inner surface of the two front-most lens elements to minimize ghosting and flare and improve overall image clarity. Unlike the above two lenses, the 12mm accepts front filters and provides a 67mm diameter thread.

In addition to these three new lenses, Rokinon has created new mounts for existing manual focus lenses. The 24mm f/1.4 ED AS IF UMC lens has added a Sony E-mount and Micro Four Thirds mount. With its f/1.4 maximum aperture, it is a very fast lens, ideal for low light and for freezing action as well as for shallow depth-of-field control. Its 35mm focal length equivalency is 36mm for the Sony E-mount and 48mm for the Micro Four Thirds, which bumps it closer to standard focal length than wide angle. Either way, its minimum focus distance is 9.8" and its optical design features two aspherical elements and a multi-layer lens coating. Also adding a new Sony E-mount and a Micro Four Thirds mount is the 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC lens. It, too, has a fast maximum aperture and an optical construction with hybrid aspherical elements and multi-layer lens coating. Its minimum focus distance is 12" and the lens includes a removable petal-type lens hood. The 35mm focal length equivalency on the Sony E mount lens is 52.5mm and on the MFT mount, it's 70mm.
Lastly, Rokinon has added an 8mm f/3.5 UMC Fish-Eye CS II Lens for Micro Four Thirds Mount. It features a full 180° angle of view with an exaggerated perspective, a 12" minimum focus distance, and aspherical elements and multi-layer coating for sharp, high-contrast imaging. On an Olympus or Panasonic MFT format camera, its 35mm focal length equivalency is 16mm.

8mm T3.1 Cine UMC Fish-Eye II
The new manual focus 8mm T3.1 Cine UMC Fish-Eye II lens is available for mirrorless Canon EF-M, Fujfilm X, Samsung NX, and Sony E mounts. As a lens designed for shooting HD video, it offers features that differentiate it from “photo lenses,” which, of course, can also serve to shoot HDSLR video. However, a Cine-dedicated lens, like the 8mm T3.1, has a clickless aperture ring, which is not only silent but enables smooth transitions between stops and the ability to shoot between those stops. Furthermore, it relates aperture in T-stops, which stands for Transmission-stops and denotes a more accurate measurement of the light entering through the lens, and provides a more consistent measurement from lens to lens. Additionally, a Cine lens features geared aperture and focus rings to enable the use of focus pull apparatus such as a follow focus system.
With a 180° angle of view, ultra-wide perspectives are enabled, and the minimum focus distance is 12". No front filter thread is provided, but a built-in lens hood is. The lenses are lightweight and particularly compact at a maximum of 2.6" long. The 35mm focal length equivalencies are 12mm for Sony E, Fujifilm X and Samsung NX mounts, and 12.8mm for Canon M.

The above 8mm T3.1 is a new lens for Rokinon, but they have also updated the line of several existing lenses by adding a Micro Four Thirds mount. The Rokinon 8mm T3.8 Cine UMC Fish-Eye CS II Lens for Micro Four Thirds offers the same 12" minimum focus distance and 180° angle of view as the above 8mm, but with a maximum aperture of T3.1. The minimum aperture for both lenses is T22. The 35mm focal length equivalence is 16mm. Physically, the lens has the same clickless aperture and geared rings with a 0.8mm pitch and, as its name indicates, it is provided with a removable lens hood.

The Rokinon 14mm T3.1 Cine ED AS IF UMC Lens for Micro Four Thirds is also a newly added mount option and offers a wide-angle perspective equivalent to 28mm on the 35mm format. Like the other lenses, it has a solid build, clickless aperture and geared rings, but in this case, its lens hood is integrated. High refractive lenses and Extra-low Dispersion and aspherical elements make up its lens design, and a multi-layer (UMC) lens coating minimizes ghosting and flare.
Three more manual focus Micro Four Thirds mount Cine lenses have been released, each having the same physical features described above, and a T1.5-22 aperture range. The 24mm T1.5 Cine ED AS IF UMC Lens for Micro Four Thirds has the 35mm focal length equivalence of a 48mm lens, and the optical construction incorporates four Extra-low Dispersion elements, as well as two aspherical elements, to reduce chromatic aberration and distortion to produce sharper imagery. UMC coating has been applied to lens elements to improve light transmission and create a more contrast-rich image. The 35mm T1.5 Cine AS UMC lens for Micro Four Thirds provides the 35mm focal length equivalence of 70mm and enables a 12" minimum focus distance. Depth-of-Field scale is marked on the lens barrel and a removable lens hood is included. Finally, the 85mm T1.5 Cine AS IF UMC Lens for Micro Four Thirds offers telephoto reach comparable to a 170mm lens in the 35mm format. Its minimum focus distance is 3.6' and its one aspherical lens element reduces aberrations; a lens coating improves light transmission. Its internal focus system maintains exacting focus and 72mm filters can be attached to the front filter thread.
