Unveiled: Samsung Announces Native 4K Mirrorless NX Camera Body

Share

Samsung has distinguished itself as a manufacturer able to deliver well-executed products that routinely provides its customers an opportunity to stay ahead of the technological curve. The Samsung NX1 Mirrorless Digital Camera is no exception, particularly for those who wish to take advantage of the quality offerings in still photography and 4K video that its back-illuminated 28.2 APS-C format CMOS sensor and the DRIMe V image processor have to offer. With ISO sensitivity ranging from 100 to 25600, extendable to 51200, digital noise is minimized and the ability to record sharp details, vivid colors, and smooth gradations in shadows is possible, even in low light.

Unique in its class, the NX1 can record  4K, UHD, or HD MP4 video files while applying High Efficiency Video Coding (H.265) in order to help ensure that the benefit of higher video resolutions do not become a burden to editing and sharing one’s work. Depending on the desired resolution, 60 fps, 30 fps, and 24 fps are available when recording in the NTSC standard, while video may be recorded at 50 fps, 25 fps, and 24 fps when PAL is selected. A built-in stereo microphone is included, while an external microphone jack can be used to record high-grade audio quality to further complement the NX1’s visual output. Videos and stills can be saved to SD-type cards, including those operable under the UHS-I or UHS-II Bus, needed for smooth 4K and UHD recording. For those who wish to save their video to an external recorder, an HDMI port in included, further increasing the NX1’s potential as the heart of a cinematography setup.

Both cinematographers and still photographers can benefit from the NX1’s 205 phase-detect AF sensors that can cut down on the amount of footage or images lost to a subject falling out of focus. The durable magnesium-alloy body is water and dust resistant with a tilting 3.0" (720 x 480) 1036k-dot FVGA AMOLED touchscreen to clearly display the subject during capture or after images and video have been saved. When it is preferable to use the camera’s viewfinder instead, a sharp, built-in 2,360k-dot XGA OLED electronic viewfinder with auto eye sensor can be used. Further demonstrating that the NX1 is built for fast shooting conditions is its ability to maintain a 15 fps burst rate with autofocus, plus a 1/8000-second top shutter speed.

A full array of shooting modes are built in, including Aperture Priority, Auto, Manual, Program, and Shutter Priority, plus “smart” modes such as Action Freeze, Beauty Face, Fireworks, Landscape, Light Trace, Multi-Exposure, Night, Panorama (Live), Rich Tone (HDR), Samsung Auto Shutter, Silhouette, Sunset, and Waterfall. Images can be saved as RAW files or JPEGs of various file sizes that correspond to user-selectable image ratios of 3:2, 16:9 or 1:1 and according to the user’s desired color editing space of Adobe RGB or sRGB.

Once the shoot is done or filming is completed, downloading and sharing work is simplified by a USB 3.0 connection, as well as NFC connectivity, 802.11b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi capability, and Bluetooth 3.0. The NX1 is designed to facilitate sharing even when large, high-quality video and image files are a consideration.

The NX1 is also available in the Samsung NX1 Mirrorless Digital Camera Kit with 16-50mm f/2-2.8 S ED OIS Lens that includes the 16-50mm f/2-2.8 S lens, a dedicated battery grip, a battery charger, and an additional camera battery. A premium Samsung “S” lens, the 16-50mm f/2-2.8 provides a 35mm equivalent focal-length range of 24.6-77mm that covers wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives. Its f/2.0-2.8 maximum aperture makes it an effective option for low-light shooting or when a shallow depth of field is needed, and its nine-blade circular aperture produces smooth out-of-focus highlights. The lens consists of 18 elements in 12 groups, including three aspherical, two ED (extra-low dispersion) and 2 XHR (eXtreme High Refractive) elements for excellent clarity, detail, and sharpness. Optical image stabilization counteracts motion blur to deliver sharper images and an Ultra-Precise Stepping Motor (UPSM) enhances the camera’s ability to autofocus quietly and accurately. Like the NX1, a dust-proof and splash-proof design enables use in inclement weather.

Further complementing the NX lens lineup is the new Samsung 50-150mm f/2.8 S ED OIS Lens.  It provides a 35mm equivalent focal length of 77-231mm, making it suitable for portraits, but especially sports photography and wildlife, due to its own UPSM motor and SHS (Samsung Hyper Shield) Coating that protects its front element from dust, water, fingerprints, and smears. Control of both depth of field and exposure is maintained due to the lens’s ability to always maintain an f/2.8 aperture regardless of the focal-length adjustment. This autofocus lens comprises 20 elements in 13 groups, including four Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements and one eXtreme High Refractive (XHR) element. That optical combination helps eliminate chromatic aberrations while keeping the lens body light and compact, weighing only 2 lb and measuring 6.1 x 3.2". A built-in custom focus-range limiter and a detachable tripod mount collar are also included with this weather-resistant lens.

The new ED-VGNX01 Vertical Battery Grip for NX1 Camera provides additional comfort when holding the Samsung NX1 in portrait mode and the ED-BP1900 Rechargeable Battery Pack for NX1 Camera is also available separately. The ED-BC4NX03 Charger for ED-BP1900 Battery Pack can be used to charge the ED-BP1900 battery.

Additional new accessories by Samsung include dedicated Jacket Cases for the NX Mini mirrorless digital camera that are available in Black or White, an NX Mini Lens Case, also available in Black or White, as well as the ED-BC4NX02 Micro-USB Charger that can be used with ED-BP1130 or ED-BP1030 batteries.

Looks promising, but how many lenses can you get for this???

There are quite a few NX mount lens options.  You can find the lenses we carry for the NX system if you Click Here.

keep me updated on availability of NX1 kit.  Thanks.

I’m not seeing an ETA for the Samsung NX1 in our system at this time.  If you haven't already, you could choose the Notify When in Stock option on the camera's page on our website.  We would then send you an email when it came into stock.  If you click on the image of the NX1 above, it will bring you to the camera’s page on our site.

Wow.  Nice specs.  Canon better watch-out.  Wish they had a lense adapter.  Going to be asking a lot to buy new lenses.

Wow! This camera has awsome specs! Has anyone at B&H used it? Would love to see s video by you just to see what H265 is like. Unfortunately though since Canon has dropped prices on lenses their resale value is down. A shame since if this csmera lives upto its specs it wins against 7D hands down!

These specs sound great but they can often flatten a poor camera, who makes this sensor? I would love it to be the bigger brother to the Galaxy S5 ISOCELL Sensor!

Also, for such a highend device i am suprised and disapointed to see such a low resolution 3" screen. At 720x480 its half the ppi of current highend phone, will just make checking a image for pin point sharpness that little harder.
