Zeiss Announces 35mm f/1.4 Distagon T* ZM Lens
The new Zeiss 35mm f/1.4mm Distagon T* ZM is a welcome new wide-angle addition for photographers who prefer M-mount rangefinders, be they made by Zeiss, Leica, or Voigtlander. Offering a versatile 35mm focal length—street photography, landscapes, groups, or any other subject requiring a wide angle of view may be approached without having to change lenses. For many photographers, a 35mm lens offers a wealth of compositional and creative possibilities due to its ability to encompass a great deal of the scene that is in front the camera, but is not so wide where it potentially limits itself to only a few situations. Complementing the 35mm focal length is a fast f/1.4 aperture, which is well suited for use in low-light settings and for greater control over focus placement when using shallow depth-of-field techniques.
Inside the all-metal body are 10 elements in 7 groups that are engineered to produce a flat image field, virtually eliminating geometric distortions. A Zeiss T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to each element to minimize lens flare and ghosting, for greater image contrast and color fidelity. On the outer barrel are highly visible scale markings, plus a large focusing ring that includes an ergonomic finger rest for increased speed and precision during operation. A circular-aperture diaphragm comprises 10 blades for smooth out-of-focus highlights, and can be adjusted in 1/3 step increments. Focus movement is smooth, and a large rotational angle helps to dial-in precise placement for critical focusing applications.
