Wolverine WIOS-2 Wireless Indoor-Outdoor Stereo Speakers: Enjoy Them Anywhere

Share

The unifying theme I perceive in the Wolverine catalog is that they either improve how we capture media, improve how we back up media or improve how we share media. The Wolverine WIOS-2 Wireless Indoor Outdoor Stereo Speakers definitely broaden the range of where you can share music. This flexible speaker system lets you share your music with family and friends in any environment, rain or shine—day or night.

The WIOS-2 is a complete speaker system that includes two portable 5-watt wireless speakers, a wireless transmitter base, three power adapters, a standard 1/8-inch (3.5mm) to 1/8-inch (3.5mm) analog audio cable and a compact remote control. Wolverine also includes a limited one-year warranty with the WIOS-2 system. When you take all these components out of the box for the first time, there may be a brief moment of paralyzing bewilderment, but once you have everything separated and unwrapped, it can all be set up quickly.

One thing to remember about the WIOS-2’s dual wireless speakers is that they are truly portable. Each speaker is a cylinder that measures 5.1 x 5.1 x 9.8 inches. The audio signal is received wirelessly. However, if you are using the included power adapters with each speaker, the speakers will have to be tethered to a wall outlet. Fortunately, each speaker can also be powered by six AA batteries (not included). If you choose to power the speakers this way, they will both be completely wireless.

The included Wolverine wireless transmitter base is what enables each speaker to receive a wireless audio signal. It uses a 2.4 GHz wireless frequency to transmit a stereo audio signal to the left and right speakers. You can place each speaker up to 200 feet away from the transmitter base, as long as there is a relatively clear field of view. If there are trees, buildings or similar obstacles in the signal path, the base’s wireless transmission range begins to diminish. Each situation is unique, so it’s hard to say what your exact transmission distance will be unless you have a totally clear line of sight.

Besides the flexibility afforded by wireless connectivity, Wolverine also advertises the WIOS-2 as a weatherproof and water-resistant indoor/outdoor speaker system, featuring an Ingress Protection rating of IPX3. This further liberates any setup constraints, which means you’ll be able to enjoy and share your music wirelessly in the backyard, on the patio, out by the pool, in your garage and even on your boat. Since the stereo speakers provide 10 watts of total RMS power output, the WIOS-2 system has enough power to fill your living room or backyard patio with music. Plus, if you own more than one WIOS-2 system, you can power additional speakers using a single WIOS-2 wireless transmitter base.

The last stage in the WIOS-2 setup process is figuring out what audio source you want to play through the speaker system. Wolverine has outfitted the transmitter base with two different inputs. The most universal input is the standard 1/8-inch (3.5mm) stereo-mini jack. The system even comes with an analog audio cable as well, so you won’t need to purchase any additional cables to connect your smartphone or tablet to the WIOS-2 system. The second input is a USB digital audio port. This input allows you to connect a variety of audio devices digitally, including your iPod, iPhone or iPad. It also supports direct digital audio connectivity between your Windows or Mac laptop computer and the WIOS-2 speaker system.

The WIOS-2 system offers a handful of unique design features as well. Besides being water resistant and wireless, the speakers are also visually enhanced. Each one features soft blue LED lighting near its base. These blue LED lights can be turned on using the remote control whenever the sun sets and you want to add a little more ambiance to your backyard pool party. Each speaker provides a convenient flip-up carrying handle as well, which you can also use to hang the speaker from a wall, ceiling or fence—indoors or out. Once you've determined the desired location for the speakers, you can use a switch located in the battery compartment of each speaker to select left stereo, right stereo or mono.
