New Studio Monitors from PreSonus

This year at NAMM, PreSonus is unveiling their first safari into the vast jungle of active studio monitors. After the success and acclaim of their monitoring controllers, such as the Central Station, this seems like a very sensible step. This debut includes two lines of studio monitors, an entry-level and a professional-level. The entry-level model is called Eris, which is a solid step up from consumer level computer speaker sets. For professionals, enter the Sceptre, a coaxial transducer system with DSP time correction. The Eris features Class AB biamplification, while the Sceptre features Class D biamplification. Each series offers two available models. The 2-way Eris series features Kevlar low-frequency drivers and low mass, silk-dome tweeters. Onboard high, mid and high-pass acoustic controls allow you to tune the sound to match your space. The smaller model, Eris E5 monitors, are rated at 70W each and can deliver a maximum of 102 dB SPL per side. The E5s each have a 5.25” driver and a 1” tweeter. The full-size Eris E8 features an 8” driver and a 1.25” tweeter. Capable of 105 dB max SPL per side, the E8 monitors are rated at 130W each. Both Eris models also feature flexible connectivity, with XLR, 1/4” TRS and RCA input connections all available. Internal protection circuits keep the Eris monitors safe from RF interference and overheating as well as transient, current and subsonic overages.

The Sceptre Series studio monitors have an unconventional look that makes them immediately interesting. However, once the physics of this design are taken into account, it is completely practical. A horn-loaded tweeter is mounted inside the woofer, creating what is called a coaxial transducer—or as PreSonus calls it, “CoActual.” The aim of this is to create a symmetrical sound field. The Sceptre series takes it a step further, featuring built-in “Coherence Alignment” with 32-bit/96 kHz DSP time correction. This means that the Sceptre series monitors are listening to themselves at every step of the way, ensuring that you always hear clear and accurate sound.

The Sceptre S6 monitors feature a 6.5” woofer and a 1” tweeter, while the S8 monitors up the ante with an 8” woofer. Both models provide 200W RMS each and up to 102 dB SPL per side. Like the Eris Series, the Sceptre models have flexible input connectivity, accepting XLR, 1/4” TRS and RCA connections. They also have circuits to protect against interference, overheating and overages in output current. Additionally, the Sceptre series features internal power supplies, “soft start” amplifiers and power switches with on/off LEDs. Finally, manual acoustic-tuning controls allow the high-frequency volume, high pass filter and sensitivity to be adjusted.

PreSonus is making a strong entrance into the active studio monitor market. These 4 models will match a range of applications, from consumers buying their first pair of quality speakers to professionals looking for the most accurate monitoring solution for their space.
