iPhone Recording, Jamming and Interacting with the New Roland Wireless Connect
Roland Wireless Connect opens up a cool new way for users of Roland electronic musical instruments to rock out, record and interact on the Web with an Apple iPhone. The basic idea is that you purchase the WNA1100-RL Wireless USB Adapter and connect it to a USB port on a compatible Roland instrument. This simple piece of hardware provides a wireless link between your instrument and the iPhone. You then download and launch one of two new Roland apps directly from the Apple App Store. In an instant you’ll be interfacing with your Roland instrument in a whole new way (a Wi-Fi network and an Internet connection are required).
The new Air Recorder app makes recording and jamming with your favorite tunes really easy. With the WNA1100-RL Wireless USB Adapter inserted into a compatible Roland Synthesizer, V-Accordion or V-Drums Sound Module, you can record performances into your iPhone through the air. You can also play songs from your iPhone and wirelessly jam along with them on your Roland instrument, and record the output. The recorded file can then be exported and shared with other iPhone apps. Check out the chart below for compatible Roland models.
In 2011, Roland introduced a new computer application for users of its popular V-Drums series of electronic drums. The Mac and Windows compatible program called V-Drums Friend Jam allows electronic drummers from around the world to play along with a wide range of practice tracks, watch their drumhead striking location and strength with a feature called Visual Workout and compete in tests of technique, variation, rhythm and stamina. There is one caveat: using the full features of V-Drum Friend Jam requires a separate MIDI interface.
The new V-Drums Friend Jam for iPhone app brings all of the popular features of the computer program to the Apple iPhone, without any need for pesky wires or MIDI interfaces. Just like the computer version, you can compete with drummers from around the world while sharpening your percussive skills, see if you’re good enough to rank among the best and Tweet your latest scores for all to see. Check out the chart below for compatible V-Drum Sound Modules.
Don’t be confused when you see the brand name “Netgear” on the WNA1100-RL Wireless USB Adapter. This specific device is indeed manufactured by Netgear, and sold in partnership with Roland. They’re expected to be available at B&H on June 25, 2012.
