The Innovative New Roland GA-112 and GA-212 Guitar Amplifiers

There are plenty of guitar amplifiers available that feature digital modeling, but the modeling is always used to emulate the characteristics of a specific guitar amplifier. The new GA-112 and GA-212 stage amplifiers from Roland feature a new, advanced COSM modeling technology called Progressive Amp, which strives to provide the player with original tones by allowing real-time morphing from say, a dry tone, to full-on distortion with a simple twist of the Drive knob. In addition, all the knobs are digitally controlled, which enables the player to radically change the sound of the amp in an instant. Elaborate foot-controller options give the player comprehensive hands-free control and offer an innovative twist on applying overdrive.

The controls on the new GA series amplifiers are very cut and dry. There are relatively few knobs and buttons to adjust, they’re simple and intuitive to operate, yet they offer deep and varied options for tone (ultra clean to extra crunchy, with Presence and Reverb effects). All of the knobs feature integrated LED rings (except the Master volume). A single LED on each ring stays illuminated to display the current setting. A feature called Smart Channel enables you to instantly switch between four different groups of knob settings, without requiring you to save or program any of them. Press a channel button and it automatically saves your current settings. Change knob positions, press the next button, and the same thing happens. The separately available Roland GA-FC Foot Controller enables you to switch quickly between Smart Channels, effects loops, and apply boosts and reverb hands-free.

The rear of the GA-FC Foot Controller features two 1/4-inch inputs for two separately available Expression pedals (such as the Roland EV-5 or EV-7). One of the inputs gives you traditional volume control and the second is dedicated to Drive control. With an Expression pedal connected to the Drive input on the GA-FC, and the GA-FC connected to a GA-112 or GA-212, you can control the Drive knob with your foot. This enables you to slowly (or quickly) apply or reduce overdrive to the signal. You can layer on a little extra crunch for a few notes in the middle of a riff, then dial it back a little, all as you continue to play. The LED ring on the Drive knob moves around as you do this, so it both sounds and looks really cool.

The GA-112 features 100 watts of power and a single 12-inch speaker, which makes it ideal for playing smaller venues and for rehearsal. The GA-212 doubles the power, pumping out 200 watts through two 12-inch speakers, which will cover you in larger clubs. Both amps feature a Link output, which enables you to chain multiple GA series amps together, which will be useful for playing even larger venues and live events. The new Roland guitar amps are available individually at B&H, or as GA-112 and GA-212 kits that are bundled together with the GA-FC Foot Controller.
