New Samsung Camcorders Announced at CES

Samsung has just announced its new line of compact video cameras which do everything from joining you for a dip in the pool to providing your footage with atmospheric in-camera background music. Whether you’re looking for an affordable camcorder to capture family memories, or a more advanced camera that accurately captures intense high-speed sports, there’s a new Samsung that will suit you nicely.

The new Samsung W300 is a pocket-sized video camera that can shoot full 1080p HD, and also take 5.5 megapixel stills. It’s designed to stay with you at all times, even if it’s in the pocket of your swimsuit. The W300 is waterproof in depths up to 16.4' (5m). It has a 2.3' (5.8cm) LCD screen on its back, and a 29.6mm wide-angle lens up front. The new Samsung W350 is identical to the W300, but the W350 includes a waterproof floating bumper and a band that enables you to strap it to your arm or chest. It’s a multi-purpose camera that can bob along with you at the surface of the pool, as you drift around aimlessly on an inflatable tube. These cameras aren’t just for summertime fun. They’re shockproof and dustproof as well, so they’re fully prepared to accompany you through any season. Both models record to Micro SD and SDHC cards.

The new Samsung F80 is a budget friendly, palm-sized camcorder that features a Schneider Kreuznach Varioplan lens with powerful 52x optical zoom. The F80 shoots 720p HD video, but if you connect it to a digital TV, its HDMI output upscales your footage to 1080i. It takes 1.9 megapixel still photos as well, and records to an SD or SDXC card. In addition to useful features like Smart Auto (which automatically adjusts the camera settings depending on your shooting situation) and Face Detection (which automatically detects faces within the scene and adjusts the camera’s setting to optimize the picture), the F80 has a fun feature called Smart BGM 2 that adds background music to your footage—it even brings the music level down a bit when someone in the video speaks.

It doesn’t matter if you’re left-handed or right-handed with the new Q20 camcorder, because it has a functionality called Switch Grip II. The Q20 is a palm-sized camera with a hand strap and a foldout LCD touch screen, and if you’re holding it in your right hand, you can switch hands, putting your left hand into the hand strap. If you did this with a camera that didn’t have the Switch Grip II feature, the footage would be upside-down. The display on the Q20 measures 2.7" (6.9cm), it records 1080i HD video, and features a 20x optical zoom. It’s equipped with a super low light BSI CMOS sensor. The new Samsung QF20 is the same camera with additional Wi-Fi capability, which enables you to share and back up your footage with computers and Wi-Fi enabled televisions.

The most full-featured cameras of the new 2012 line-up are the VF20 and VF25. They carry a sizeable 3.3" AMOLED touch screen display, the handy Wi-Fi sharing and back-up functionality, a built-in LED light, a 42x optical zoom (with 420x digital zoom), full 1080/60p HD video, optical image stabilization, time lapse and 240 frame-per-second slow motion recording—even the smart background music feature. The VF25 is an identical camera, but it also features a hefty 32GB of built-in internal memory (in addition to its SDHC card slot).
