Versatility and Efficiency with Sigma's 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro HSM Lens
Sigma has just announced a new wide angle to telephoto zoom lens which covers an ample range of focal lengths, from 18 to 250mm. This broad spectrum of angles of view is further enhanced by a minimum focusing distance of 13.8" (35 cm) across the entire zoom range. The versatility of this lens makes it ideal for all-around use and perfect for using in situations where you want to keep your shooting setup minimal, such as when traveling. This lens is available with a Canon EF mount, a Nikon F mount, Pentax K mount, Sigma SA mount or Sony Alpha mount.
The minimum focusing distance of 13.8" throughout the zoom range allows this lens to be a unique solution for macro photography; you can control the size and framing of your subjects by simply zooming in and out, versus having to move and readjust focus. A maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.9 is possible, or 1:2 when equated to APS-C sensor-size use. This maximum magnification ratio is also noted on the side of the lens barrel next to each focus-distance marking.
Highly Versatile Design
Besides the wide focal length range of 18-250mm, this lens has also been designed to make it as compact as possible, while still retaining high imaging quality capabilities. The incorporation of double-sided aspherical lens elements helps to reduce the filter diameter to only 62mm while keeping the dimensions at a highly portable 2.9 x 3.5". This small form factor further adds to the travel benefits of this lens.
For greater durability and strength, the lens also incorporates a new construction material into the barrel. TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) is a replacement for traditional polycarbonate and offers up to 25% greater elasticity and less contractility when subjected to distinct temperature changes. For even greater stability, a brass-made bayonet mount has also been incorporated into the design, providing a more rigid and accurate point of connection between the camera body and lens.
Sigma’s Optical Stabilizer (OS) system provides approximately 4 stop’s worth of camera-shake correction, making this lens ideal for use in low light. The OS system is even highly effective in macro modes where camera shake can become especially notable. When you’re photographing moving subjects, the lens can also help detect camera movement and effectively reduce camera shake while panning. Optical Stabilization is not supported on the Pentax or Sony mount lenses, as these camera systems employ image stabilization technologies in the camera bodies themselves.
Both the aspherical and SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide superb correction for a variety of aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range, resulting in more accurate, contrast-rich and vivid imagery. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is also applied to the lens elements to help reduce ghosting and flare, providing deeper blacks and improved sharpness even in difficult lighting situations.
The Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 is a highly efficient lens and a well-rounded solution for the times when you only want to carry a single lens. On top of its long scale of focal lengths, the lens’s compact size and stable build make it an optimal travel companion—one that allows you to have a wide arc of possibilities within a single entity.
