Share

Sony has just announced the release of their first 4K Ultra HD TV for retail sale. The new X900 Series 4K Ultra HD 3D Internet TV is also one of the industry’s first available 4K televisions. Available in a 55-inch or 65-inch model, the X900 features a 3D LCD panel with 3840 x 2160 Ultra HD 4K resolution. Amazingly, that’s four times the resolution of a standard Full HD 1920 x 1080p television. The X900 also features TRILUMINOS display technology, Dynamic Edge LED backlighting and a variety of connectivity options including built-in Wi-Fi, Miracast wireless mirroring, Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) and one-touch NFC wireless mirroring.

The TV’s built-in Wi-Fi provides access to the Sony Entertainment Network and a variety of entertainment apps including Netflix, YouTube and more. It also supports DLNA home network content streaming. The X900 provides mobile device streaming as well. Mobile High Definition Link (MHL) mirroring lets you to transfer video or Internet content displayed on any compatible mobile device directly to the TV screen. MHL also supports up to eight channels of audio mirroring and the MHL connection will even charge your mobile device. Miracast technology lets you stream movies, music and apps wirelessly from any Miracast-enabled mobile device directly to the TV screen. One-touch NFC wireless mirroring works with any Xperia mobile device. All you have to do is briefly touch or “pair” your compatible smartphone or tablet to the X900’s included one-touch remote control. Almost instantly, you’ll be able to view exactly what’s on your Xperia mobile device’s screen directly on the X900’s large 4K screen.

The X900 is also equipped with an advanced 4K X-Reality PRO chip that will actually upscale whatever you’re watching to 4K Ultra HD resolution. The TV uses Motionflow XR 960 technology as well, which provides Sony’s most advanced smoothing function for ultra-clear viewing of fast-paced sports and movies with high-speed action. This new model also offers SimulView dual screen gaming, which is another new Sony feature. It allows you and a friend to both experience your own big-screen view of the action when using a PlayStation3 gaming console. SimulView works by presenting two separate Full HD pictures that each player watches independently through Sony’s optional SimulView glasses.

For rich color, Sony has equipped the X900 with their new TRILUMINOS display. TRILUMINOS display technology provides a wider color range and it more accurately reproduces skin tones. For high-quality audio, the TV features Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Pulse and Simulated Surround. Sony also provides their most advanced S-Force Front Surround 3D technology, which creates a detailed soundstage no matter where you're sitting in the room. The X900's speaker system includes a 65-Watt, 2.2-channel system that features dual two-way magnetic fluid speakers and dual subwoofers. The X900 is equipped with all the usual connection interfaces as well. It offers four HDMI inputs, three USB ports for playing multimedia files, a digital audio output and a variety of analog connection options.

The X900 supports mobile device control as well. It works with Sony’s free SideView App, which is available for either iOS or Android. The SideView App lets you control the TV and browse the channel guide using your smartphone or tablet. You can also use the app to learn details about the show you're watching, including cast info, episode facts, etc. The app even lets you search for available/upcoming TV shows or available Internet videos and content from entertainment apps like Netflix. Plus, after selecting from your mobile device what you want to watch, you can Tweet about it—all without leaving the app.

The TV’s other notable features include a wide 178-degree viewing angle, four pairs of Passive 3D glasses, an onboard iManual, free Skype calling with Sony's optional Skype camera and a 4K photo viewing mode that allows you to view, share and edit 8-megapixel pictures and up in 3840 x 2160 4K Ultra HD resolution, right on the TV screen. You can even scroll through your photo albums from the comfort of your couch, or search for specific images by date, time, location or facial features.

Although the X900 is more expensive than similar-sized Full HD LED TVs, its innovative features and 4K resolution make it future proof. This model is so advanced that it will take several years for it to become out-of-date. Just when you thought there was nothing else that could be improved on a television other color tone & power consumption!!!

But I dont believe that the codecs support 4k streaming over dlna! Or over any ip ( ethernet or wifi) connections.

SO I can't watch any 4k streaming from my private dlna server or from the youtube 4k channel for instance.

The maximum codec resolution in the manual is 1080p.
