Sony Announces New Full-Frame Camera and Accessories

Share

Sony has just announced two new cameras along with several accessories to accompany those cameras, as well as a new and innovative external flash unit. The first camera is the Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R, which is a special edition of last year’s impressive Cyber-shot DSC-RX1, the fixed-lens digital camera with a full-frame sensor and fixed 35mm f/2.0 lens.

To achieve higher resolution and the sharpest results from its full-frame 24.3MP sensor, the optical low-pass (anti-aliasing) filter has been removed from the RX1R. In most DSLRs, an optical low-pass filter is installed to minimize the occurrence of moiré and other digital artifacts that can tarnish certain color images. The filter is effective in doing so; however, a side effect is a slight degradation of image sharpness. With the removal of the filter, the minute details of your image are more noticeable and overall sharpness is improved, but the risk of moiré is increased. It is for this reason that a camera without the optical low-pass filter is recommended for photographers who regularly shoot in RAW format and can utilize post-processing tools to remove any unwanted color artifacts.

Other than the removed low-pass filter, the RX1R is the same high-performance camera as the RX1. It houses the aforementioned 24.3MP full-frame sensor and the BIONZ image processor, which enables 5 fps continuous shooting, 14-bit RAW image recording and Full HD 1080/24p video capture with built-in stereo microphone and a jack for an external microphone. The camera’s low-light performance—with ISO sensitivity up to 25600 and fast, accurate autofocus—is particularly impressive for a point-and-shoot camera. Its compact size is notable considering its ample sensor size. Its solid, metal build is durable and handsome, and the control dials are well-placed, knurled, and easily adjusted. The one-touch video button is nicely located toward the right side of the back plate and a textured rubber-like grip affords secure one-handed use. A 3.0-inch 1,229k-dot resolution LCD monitor provides image composition and playback. A pop-up flash is built in and a multi-interface shoe allows the integration of an optional external flash or electronic viewfinder.

The integrated 35mm f/2.0 Carl Zeiss lens is an ideal length for a fixed focal length. It offers three control rings (aperture, focus, and macro switching) to make adjustments while you keep your eye on your composition. The Rx1R now supports Sony’s TRILUMINOUS color technology, offering an expanded color gamut when viewing photos or videos on TVs equipped with a TRILUMINOS display. Type D HDMI Micro output is supported and images are stored and transferred via Memory Stick PRO Duo, Pro-HG Duo, Pro-HG HX media, or SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera

The second new camera from Sony is also a follow-up to a camera from last year. The Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Digital Camera offers numerous upgrades and additions to its partner model, the Cyber-shot DSC-RX100. A new 1.0” 20.2MP Exmor R sensor with back-illuminated technology increases light sensitivity by 41 percent and combines with Sony’s Column A/D Conversion to reduce noise, making the RX100 II a great camera for shooting in dim light. The ISO range has also expanded up to 12800 further increasing its low-light performance, and improvements in the sensor, combined with the BIONZ image processor have increased the camera’s autofocus speed and accuracy. It can capture in both RAW and JPEG formats as well as RAW+JPEG, and is compatible with Memory Stick PRO Duo, Pro-HG Duo and Pro-HG HX Duo media as well as SD/SDHC/SDXC cards.

Wi-Fi connectivity has been added to the mix as well. The RX100 II offers a one-touch image transfer to smartphones and one-touch remote to release the shutter on your camera via your smartphone. In addition, connectivity has been made even simpler thanks to NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, which enables your camera to connect with your Android phone or tablet simply by touching it to the camera.

Two important physical additions to the RX100 II provide you with some professional options to improve your shooting. The 3.0” 1,229k-dot TFT LCD monitor on the RX100 II delivers a bright display for image composition and playback and is now capable of tilting up 84° and down 43°. The tilt capability provides the camera with more versatility when shooting at odd angles and when faced with the glare of bright lights. Also, a new Multi Interface Shoe has been added, which will significantly expand both photo and movie shooting possibilities. For example, this hot shoe will accept an electronic viewfinder, an external flash unit (including the HVL-F43M), or a stereo microphone. A remote control can be connected via the Multi Terminal. A pre-flash TTL built-in pop-up flash is also supported by the new RX100 II, which is one of the most compact, high-performance cameras available.

Regarding shooting movies, the RX100 II supports Full HD 1080p with AVCHD codec but in addition to 60 fps, it also offers the chance to shoot in the more cinematic 24 fps. Recording in the MP4 format is possible when you simply want videos that are easy to upload to the Web. A built-in stereo microphone is supported.

The lens on the RX100 II is the same Carl Zeiss T* f/1.8 3.6x Optical Zoom lens with the 35mm equivalent focal length of 28-100mm for wide-angle to telephoto flexibility. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization reduces blur caused by camera shake and Active 3-Way stabilization adds digital rolling control for smoother handheld videos. A customizable ring around the lens allows for DSLR-like control over camera settings, including a new step-zoom function that enables instant selection of commonly used focal lengths.

Many of the enhancements made to the RX100 II provide it with professional capabilities; however, as a compact camera designed for all levels of users, it also offers many assistive features that will help make it easier to capture the difficult shot. Auto HDR mode, for example, combines three shots of a high-contrast scene into one well-balanced image, Face Detection improves group shots and portraits and Auto Object Framing even improves composition. Of course, Picture Effects and Creative Style settings are supported as well.

New Sony Camera Accessories

Several accessories to go with both the RXR1 and the RX100MR have also been announced. The VFA-49RI Filter Adapter fits on the RX100M2 or RX100 camera and enables the attachment of 49mm filters to expand shooting creativity. Mounting and removal of the adapter is simple, thanks to its one-touch release mechanism, and its receiver securely attaches to the front of your lens barrel. The LCJ-RXC Premium Jacket Case fits snugly around the base of the RX100M2 or RX100 and protects your camera from dust, moisture and scratches. The base of the case remains fixed to the camera, even providing access to the tripod socket while the top enclosure unsnaps to free the lens when it’s time to shoot. A shoulder strap is included with this retro, stylish case. Lastly, the AG-R1 Attachment Grip mounts to the front of both the RX100M2 and RX100 with double-sided adhesive and provides a secure grip when shooting in active situations or anytime you need an extra degree of stability.

The Sony HVL-F43M Flash Unit features the innovative “Quick Shift Bounce” system that enables the flash to pivot 90° left and right for fast vertical shooting without need for a bracket. In addition, it offers Wireless Ratio Control of up to three groups of off-camera flashes. The “ratio control” lets you set the luminosity ratio for each flash group, providing easily obtainable creative lighting potential. The HVL-F43M has an effective flash range of up to 30’. The flash head can adjust 90° up and to the left for versatile bounce angles in both the horizontal and vertical orientation, and a built-in bounce sheet and retractable wide-angle panel are also provided. The HVL- F43M flash also adds a powerful LED video light with 10-step level adjustment.

Modeling-light capability offers a pulse light to help determine where shadows will fall, allowing you to make adjustments prior to shooting. TTL metering, high speed sync, and auto white balance and zoom can make difficult lighting decisions easier, and a moisture-resistant design protects the flash for long life. Included with the flash are protector cap for the connector, a mini stand and a case.
