Having been generally unimpressed by home 3D TV products that have come and gone over the last dozen years, I was more than a little skeptical when the chatter from this year's Consumer Electronics Show was mainly about 3D TV. So, I wasn't expecting much when I visited the Samsung Experience at Columbus Circle in early April to check out a range of 3D TV products.
The triumph of digital TV broadcasting on June 12, 2009 (D-Day) was a defining moment for one generation above all others -- Baby Boomers. The growth of this generation closely tracks the rise of network television in the second half of the 20th Century. It's a generation I refer to as anadiggies and D-Day as a crossing over from the analog world, where they were born, into the digital world, where they'll expire -- no coupon necessary.
You may not be aware that B&H Photo regularly creates unique videos that demonstrate features of the products it sells. You'll find the entire library on the B&H Web site at www.video.bhphotovideo.com where, among other options, you can use the Channel Navigator to view programs based on such categories as photo, home entertainment, or computer products.
USB 3.0 is about 10 times faster than USB 2.0, making it a terrific upgrade, and a great way to save time by cutting down on file transfer times. Unfortunately, most computers in use today don’t have integrated USB 3.0 ports.
So, you’re planning on upgrading your computer’s graphics card. That’s great. A new graphics card can help speed up older systems tremendously, under the right circumstances. A new graphics card can also make your system compatible with newer displays, provided you can make everything work.
When recordable CD-ROM drives came out, computer users were ecstatic that there was finally a form of removable media that dwarfed floppy disks in capacity. At 650MB (per layer, per side), CD-ROMs held roughly 451 times the data of 1.44MB floppy disks.
Most people own only one computer, or at least they operate only one computer at a time. After all, you can always multitask on a computer; that is, perform more than one operation simultaneously. For example, you might have a file downloading in the background while you check email in the foreground.
There’s a good chance that some day you’ll want to connect your computer to your big-screen TV to make it easier to share either photos you’ve taken or Internet video with guests. HDMI has become the standard type of high-definition connector found on modern TV sets, and many new computers include an HDMI output.
It’ll happen sooner or later. Your computer’s hard drive will fill up, especially if you have an older system that came with relatively small storage capacity compared to more recent iterations. It doesn’t cost a lot of money to buy and install a hard drive with much larger capacity, and it’s a pretty easy job as long as you’re not fearful of doing it.
Computers are great for dishing up information in a straightforward and easy-to-digest manner. The problem is that they can just as easily serve up information to individuals who are not authorized to see the information. A privacy filter can eliminate that risk.
Identity theft and the gathering of personal information is big business, at least for the people determined to collect it. It’s one thing to innocently throw away a credit card bill only to have someone find the information in the trash and use it to their advantage.
It is unfortunate that people’s memory can get worse with age. Computers, too, tend to lose memory as they get older. Fortunately, upgrading computer memory is an easy task, and not an expensive one, either.
It’s quite common to have an old computer die on you and not have it repaired, especially if it’s more than a few years old. But what can you do with the old carcass? If a computer dies for any reason other than a dead hard drive, you can always convert the old drive into an external unit, and grab important files off the drive in the process.
Optical discs have been common for more than 30 years now, and scratched discs have been common for just as long. Just about everyone has experienced a CD that skips or a DVD that freezes. Optical discs are read by lasers, and a little scratch or splotch of grease is all it takes to interrupt the reading process. Sometimes you can simply clean or polish a disc and it will work like new.
Do you know what would happen if you were to use your notebook computer while it was plugged into an outlet and charging, and a blackout were to occur? Nothing. It will probably be dark in the room, but the computer will be fine. The battery in the notebook computer will kick in and provide power until it’s completely discharged or until the AC power comes back online.
