Hands-On Review: Sony NEX-VG900 Full-Frame Camcorder

Share

Sony’s new NEX-VG900 is the first prosumer camcorder with a full-frame image sensor and an interchangeable lens mount.

Mia McCormick demonstrates many of the camera’s features and discusses a few lens options that should help users take advantage of the large sensor. For the most part, this is a glowing review peppered with a few criticisms that might limit the VG900’s appeal to professional videographers, but you’ll also learn some tips and tricks for overcoming these limitations. Film-like video with shallow depth of field is where the VG900 really excels, and this video provides some beautiful samples. Good review, and showed me both the plus and con of the camera.

This is an outstanding video that clearly presents the pros and cons of this product.

A good rapid overview calling out some benefits and a couple of serious negatives. Too much time spent on the Rokinon lens which may be a nice accessory but it's not what I was looking for in a review.

Hi there,
Thanks for the quick review. Quite a few important tips in a short clip.
It would be nice to have a text info following the video review (or in the review web page) for comparing the features of competing brands and models that fit in that category.
Something like: ok, I liked this but if I like to have XLR built in, what do I loose? or what price tag increase?
Something in the realm of Snapsort.com feature matrix / highlights that you can A & B things or radio buttons you can filter or restrict the selection.
One of the ones I would be really curious to see for product search is to select the bit dept for the image or F stops of dynamic range and see how many affordable camcorders you end up with.
I mean, would you like to pick up a camera because the sensor is a bit bigger or certain handy feature but then you find out you keep clipping the whites or loose the definition in the dark spots? or the color representation is not accurate and natural?
