Blackmagic Design URSA 4K Digital Cinema Camera (EF and PL Mount)

Share

Dubbed simply URSA, this entrant from Blackmagic Design promises to deliver a production-grade cinema camera at a prosumer price. The camera features a global shutter—that means no flash-banding or wobble—at the UltraHD spec 4K resolution of 3840 x 2180, with an adjustable frame rate from 23.98 to 60 fps. Plus, 12 stops of dynamic range and CinemaDNG RAW recoding gives colorists plenty of latitude to create the perfect look in post, which you will probably want to grade using the full version of DaVinci Resolve color-correction software that comes free with the camera.

But it takes more than a sensor and a great image to make a camera "production ready." The URSA gives you a massive (by ENG standards) 10.1" flip-out LCD screen, ideal for single-operator shoots, and there are two secondary 5" displays on either side for audio levels, timecode, histograms, or whatever other data might be pertinent to a secondary member on larger shoots. Multiple tapped holes all over the camera make it easy to mount monitors, external recorders, lights, or basically any other on-camera accessories right where they're needed. BNC and XLR I/O ports give you the locking connectors that are a must on busy professional shoots where cables stand a high chance of being pulled loose. Since CinemaDNG RAW eats up a lot of memory, long-form shooters will appreciate Dual CFast 2.0 memory card slots, so that when one card fills up, the camera will automatically roll over to the second card.

URSA comes in two versions, a PL mount model for users with cinema lenses, and an EF mount version for those transitioning over from the DSLR world.
