New WD TV Live Streaming Media Player from Western Digital
Western Digital had it backwards when, three years ago, it promoted the WD TV HD Media Player as an accessory to its Passport hard drives. Users already wanted to do more than copy content from a computer and walk it over to a media player plugged into their TV. So, the company followed up with players that could stream, too. On October 6, it introduced its most capable media receiver/player yet, the WD TV Live Streaming Media Player.
The WD TV Live is Western Digital’s first receiver with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, so you don’t need to attach an optional wireless adapter or plug in an Ethernet capable. The model supports 802.11n throughput and Full HD (1080p) output.
WD TV Live launches with Spotify, the cloud-based music service, as its newest streaming service. (Read the InDepth article Spotify Arrives in the American Listening Room.) It joins the WD TV family’s current content offerings, which include Netflix, Hulu Plus, Facebook, Pandora, YouTube, Blockbuster on Demand, CinemaNow, Picasa Web Albums, Daily Motion, AccuWeather, Live 365, Shoutcast Radio, Tune in Radio, Flingo, Deezer and Mediafly.
WD TV Live is Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) compliant for streaming music, videos and photos stored on another device connected to your home network. And, of course, you’ll still be able to plug in two USB storage devices, such as a camcorder, flash drive or hard drive. A remote is included.
