New Yamaha PSR-S750 & PSR-S950 Digital Arranger Workstations

Share

Yamaha has just announced two new Digital Arranger Workstations, the PSR-S750 and the PSR-S950. These feature-packed music creation machines can handle everything from writing and arranging to recording and performing. They both feature hundreds of AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) stereo sampled voices, authentically capturing the sound and nuance of many different instruments. Additionally, both models have auto-accompaniment, integrated USB audio recorders, 4 Multi-Pad triggers, digital amplifiers and built-in speakers.

The PSR-S750 and PSR-S950 both have 61-key, organ-style keyboards with standard pitch and mod wheels. Among the onboard sounds, each model has several categories of Featured Voices. These sounds isolate the specific characteristics and mannerisms of a sampled instrument, such as the sound of finger-sliding between guitar voicings, and replicate them to add realism and expression. Best of all, the additional detail of these captured nuances eliminates the need to manipulate patch controls. You can just relax and enjoy playing your keyboard.

The workstations have 1/4" connections for outputs and pedals, an 1/8” Aux In, and USB/MIDI connectivity. The USB-A port enables flash drive recording as well as storage for custom patch settings and audio for Multi-Pad triggering. The USB-B port allows for multi-function computer connection.

PSR-S750

The new PSR-S750 features 678 Voices, including 38 Super Articulation Voices, 18 Mega Voices, 24 Sweet! Voices, 46 Cool! Voices, 29 Live! Voices and 10 Organ Flutes. If you’re not already impressed with the possibilities, Yamaha offers Voice and Style Expansion packs, allowing you to add sampled instruments from all over the world.

PSR-S950

The new PSR-S950 features an even larger library of 786 Voices, including 62 Super Articulation Voices, 23 Mega Voices, 27 Sweet! Voices, 64 Cool! Voices, 39 Live! Voices and 20 Organ Flutes. The PSR-S950 adds the Audio Styles advanced auto-accompaniment feature. Audio Styles uses Yamaha Time Stretch Technology to sync real recordings of drummers, percussionists and percussion ensembles seamlessly to your playing.

The PSR-S950 also adds a 1/4" microphone input and two vocal features. Vocal Cancel is essentially a karaoke generator, removing center-panned vocal material to let you do the singing. Time Stretch and Pitch Shift functionality allow you to sing any song in the key and tempo of your choice. Vocal Harmony2 backs you up with 44 presets of effects and real time vocal harmonies.

Just curious as to why Yamaha keyboards of this quality/level don't offer an arpeggiator.

Hello Bob -

I am sure Yamaha has their own reasons. Every manufacturer makes choices regarding features, design and functions in terms of what to include and /or leave out of their products.  Bottom line production costs often impact these decisons as well.  Check out the Yamaha MM8 88-Key Synthesizer Keyboard Value Bundle Kit which offers a built-in arpeggiator feature.

Thanks for the come-back, Mark. I'm going for the 910. In conjunction with a DAW,it should well serve my purpose for music production from my home studio. My question regarding the arpeggiator was merely out of curiosity, since some of the other manufacturers have that feature in lower quality keyboards.

To Whom....I have had the S-910 since Jan '12. I also joined a users group--they r dedicated to helping...I LOVE the S-910 & I'm still learning. I miss the vertical pots my Korg I-30 has yet, the 910 sounds amazing, especially w/ most of the DX7's sounds I loved in the 80's.
If you want external pots=there's the TYROS for $4000+.
Since I'm not on the road, making on the road $$ anymore, I bought the YAMAHA S-910 & w/ the $$$ I saved Bought a PRIUS. WIN WIN !!
I have great sounds, great tempos and i get to any gig using 1/2 the gas I ever did b-4. Again a WIN WIN & I feel blessed to have both.
Good Luck, Don
PS I use the TASCAM 2488 NEO-i'm hands on for all my recording & will never rely on a windows PC--except for mastering & copying.

Thanks for your comments, Don. I'd listened to numerous demos by the competition, many times, and to my ear, the 910 has the best voice quality for the price. Weight, portability, etc., isn't a factor. It will be used only for music producction in the home studio.
Bob

Hi there,

Which one is better then? S910 or S950??? Further more, looking for indian styles for any of these two machines. How and from where do I get it?

Hi -

As the s910 is now discontinued - the PSR-950 is a fine choice  for you and offers a terrific sound engine.

Super Articulation Voices authentically reproduce the performance characteristics of acoustic instruments. They also add expressive nuances to your performance without the need for tricky controller manipulation. The PSR-S950's expansion capability ensures that it can always be updated with new Voices and Styles from around the world.

it does judging from the picture and the specs.

The Portable ES-433 does have arpeggiator

Arpege is in the pads, there are some kinds of arpege

Because its an arranger workstation not a synth
but it has alot of guitar strummings, bass loops and rhitms made by professional drummers
I was a Motif,Roland,Korg guy
but these arrangers and the new Tyros 4
are the real thing...go to a music store and try one of them
and you'l remeber my words

Why are you sending me to a yamaha page? all i said was that the arrangers come with better sounds out of the box.better than the workstations or synths also the includes great rithms ?????????? well i could complain about the lacky key touch of yamaha PSR series and that they cost alot of money Psr-710,750,910,950 they could have a better synth action touch on the keys.......like Roland does the thing about Roland is that their sound engine is very poor.

Hi Bob -

Although "John Roca" makes a valid point below, ultimately Yamaha has their own reasons for ithe inclusion of certain features, functionalities and designs.  You may want to pose your inquiry directly to Yamaha as they generally do not share these  product design decisions with their vendors:

Yes...YES, it does have arpeggiator

Hi,
I just want to ask if there is a very big difference in the sound of the styles on 750 vs 950 when used with PA-equipment/loudspeakers?
And also i now use a Yamaha psr 3000, are the styles compatible with both 750 and 950? I have spent so many years building the styles im using at concerts, so i really need to know?
Thank you in advance for answer,

Kind regards Leif.

Hi Leif -

When used with PA equipment or active monitors the audio output quality of these workstations will sound the same.

The AWM stereo sampling tone generator features 786 Voices with 128-note polyphony. Additionally, the PSR-S950 has 33 Drum/SFX kits, 480 XG Voices, General MIDI 2, and GS. The same Mega Voice Style Technology used in your PSR -3000 is employed in the 750 and 950 keyboards as well -  so compatability is not an issue at all.

Hello, i have a MOTIF ES6 currently, which uses about 164MB of internal space for its tones. How much space is dedicated for tones on the S750 and S950? how much better are the sampled tones i suppose is what im getting at. I understand it has megavoice ect..
Thanks

Quick question. When I'm using the rhythm acmp. I find the right section of the keyboard is very soft, the acmp. overpowers the right hand lead. Where can I go to EQ a good balance mix? I have tried the mixing console section but have not found a way. Please help me out. Thanks!

Within the mixing console you can change the volume of the voices you use. Under Vol/Voice, you can change the voice for each part and adjust panning and volume for each part.
