David Burnett just celebrated fifty years with a camera in his hand. And no, he can’t really believe it’s been that long. A long freelance career working for Time, Life, Newsweek, the New York Times Magazine, among others, has taken him to 85 countries, photographing news and feature stories that run the gamut of modern journalism. Working through the agency he co-founded in 1975 - Contact Press Images -- he’s photographed every President since JFK, and the last 7 Summer Olympic Games. In the last decade, while jumping into the digital photographic world, he has at the same time carried his beloved Speed Graphics, in an attempt to force himself to see things "differently." Among the awards he has won include Magazine Photographer of the Year (NPPA), Press Photo of the Year (World Press Photo), the Philippe Halsman Award (ASMP), the Robert Capa Gold Medal (Overseas Press Club) and two Olivier Rebbot Awards, for foreign reporting. (Overseas Press Club.) He is the author of two photographic books: "Soul Rebel - an Intimate Portrait of Bob Marley," and "44 Days: Iran and the Remaking of the World," -– photographs from the 1979 Iranian Revolution. He is a graduate in Political Science from Colorado College.
