"An illuminating portrait of the American spirit that will surprise, touch, and utterly absorb you."

The Oxford Project has been featured on CNN.com, and CBS SUNDAY MORNING, and in THE WASHINGTON POST, THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE , and THE NEW YORKER and was one of Amazon's ten best photography books of 2008.

In 1984, photographer Peter Feldstein attempted to photograph everyone in the town of Oxford, Iowa, where he had lived for eight years. There were six hundred and seventy-six people in the Oxford, and Peter wanted to take photographs of everyone.

Oxford is only 16 miles west of The University of Iowa, in Iowa City, a lively town of 62,220. But in many ways Oxford is a self-contained, insular town of hopes and dreams, virtually untouched by all the vitality and vulgarity of urban America.

Peter set up shop in a storefront, across the street from where he lived. Inside he hung a wrinkled construction tarp and turned on two 1,000-watt quartz lights. He didn't pose anyone. Instead, he gave each person an opportunity to be him or herself. He asked people to dress as they ordinarily would on a Saturday afternoon Peter was interested in little things: the tilt of a head, the placement of hands, a half-hearted attempt at a smile.

Twenty-one years later, Peter set up his camera again to re photograph Oxford's residents. Some whose photographs Peter had taken in 1984 had died. Some had moved away. But many still lived in Oxford. Each subject was then interviewed and they quickly discovered that each interview took on a personality of its own.'/>
