I was looking for a camera that would give me good image quality without the size and bulk of my DSLR. I was also hoping for good low-light performance. I have purchased several Point & Shoot cameras and been disappointed with all. I prefer to capture in RAW mode so I can adjust the development of the image. The G16 affords me just that.
I took the camera with a group viewing the inside of an old historic building this weekend, I found at a 1x zoom I had excellent low light performance and could get an ISO of 80 in Aperture priority. However increasing to 5x quickly brought me to 3200 ISO and a noisy photo.
That is very likely a harsh and unfair judgement as the lighting was really bad and bottom line to keep a tolerable shutter speed a higher ISO was required. My friend with a Full Frame had the same experience. I did under expose the photo a few times which brought about a slow shutter speed. This required bracing the camera against a solid object to get a picture. This worked well and I got several good photos in a rather dark room without flash (not allowed) this way.
I found the View Finder difficult to use, but using the screen on back I could see the photo and all the necessary information required to create a great shot, this provided a very ergonomic picture taking experience, I would say I prefer it over my DSLR. Yes it can be done the same with my DSLR but the camera is too heavy to make it comfortable.
The image quality is easily as good as my DSLR. The f1.8 to f2.8 lens makes it a very good low light camera and an excellent outdoor camera. I intend to use it as my general walk around camera. I believe street photography may be calling me.
Overall I believe I will be using this camera as much as my DSLR.

Bought this camera as a complement to my SLR based on feature set and noticed the following:

Pros:
Practically no shutter lag
AF works well on first image and in low light
Good control over AF zones
Large aperture - good in low light
Battery lasts reasonably long
Good image quality despite moderate resolution
Intuitive UI (via screen)

Cons:
Autofocus during continuous shooting is garbage - 80% of photos taken with Continuous AF are blurry (BIGGEST issue I've seen in stark contrast with what Canon may make you believe the camera can do - admittedly G16 does not use phase contrast focusing)
Ergonomics could be better - primary issue is dial on back: registers click instead of turn half of the times
Retracted lens protected by flimsy baffles, no lens cap
Environmental sealing could be better
Can be stopped down to f/8 only (to be fair this is not bad for a P&S camera)
Some awkward limitations on setting ISO and/or aperture in portrait and HDR modes

Great camera if you don't need Continuous AF (Canon needs to improve this) and you don't get frustrated with the dial in the back. In my experience not useful for shooting series of photos of moving subjects.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

Brought the camera to the bar right out of the box and took close ups on the tableware and at 20X across the bar. All with no flash and was amazed at the results - noisy but you could still read the labels on the bottles from 30 feet . Went around Detroit photographing graffiti and decaying houses in less than ideal light and it performed flawlessly capturing the vivid colors as well as the detail in the dark shadows. A handheld, 5X zoom close up of a bumblebee on a flower revealed the wing pattern and moisture droplets on leg hairs and stinger from 10 feet and no flash. Lastly, had fun with the faux blur setting (2 shots in succession) but given some of the flower shots and closeups, the little sensor and lens managed to get a pleasing blur at normal settings too. Expensive but worth it.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

This camera is all I wanted it to be and more. I only wish the camera came with a booklet available with all the directions necessary to take full advantage of its many features. It is only available on line and I had to make several calls to Canon to get started. Inasmuch as I took a trip to Europe shortly after I got the camera and was not in an area with internet access, I was unable to learn about features that would have been useful to me when I was abroad.

Purchased the camera for my wife but found that the camera is more than just a point and shoot camera. It will shoot in the RAW mode and many similar functions as my Canon 7D. The video is very good for such a small device.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

Purchased this camera for a recent trip. Took over four thousand photos. Mostly used the Auto setting, with great results. The only issue was with taking photos through windows where the focus wasn't always on the subject and was focusing on the glass. Otherwise, great exposures and worked very well. The manual settings are useful and easy to use. Overall very satisfied and would buy again.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

As I get older I get lazier and my Nikon D5100 and lenses were collecting dust in the closet. Also I had a Nikon P7700 that I had never warmed up to. My favorite camera was an old Canon S95 which gave me great pictures but the the shutter release had developed a kink that drove me crazy. So I sold all three on @ and bought a Canon G-16. It takes great pictures and is built like a tank. It may be that last camera I ever buy!

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I am a professional shooter of 35 years. I usually shoot with high-end Canon DSLR with L-Series lenses.

I needed a smaller camera for personal and professional use that I could take underwater, as well as something that gave me another video option.

This camera far exceeded my expectations in terms of video and photo quality. The camera is easy to use, and surprisingly sophisticated. I can get great results easily, but if I want to dig deeper into the mechanics of the camera, it will let me. Isn't too much that you can't do with this sweet little camera. Image stabilization when videotaping is shockingly good. Makes the footage look like it was shot with a glide cam.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I got this camera after reading some reviews, I just wanted a camera that will take decent photos that some of the other point and shoots on the market don't really offer I find. I like the build quality it feels very much like my 5D mark III its very solid.

I use this mainly for landscape and people shots, I have found it very good even at low speeds which i found I can do some panning with this camera, as I'm used to shooting moving vehicles.

I think this camera is a great second camera just for when you don't want to lug around your main kit, sure it has its limitations but it also has quite a few good features as well... I like the fact you can do shutter speeds up to 1/4000th to 250" seconds in manual mode, I haven't found the f-stop of 8 to be as issue as the in camera ND filter helps cut down the light by a few stops.
This is really good for long exposure work, but you can get attachments for this camera that allows you to add more filter externally.

Things I don't like about the camera is:
            1. the manual focus is a bit of a pain in low light conditions as its a bit hit and miss even with the small box magnification, it would be nice to have a focus ring on the front but this is a small thing... after all its only a compact camera not a digital SLR camera.
            2. would be nice to have a lock dial on the mode on the top as I found myself bumping that a lot which can be annoying.
            3. I can't think of anything else as its just such a nice little package.

The good things about the camera:
            1. I like how long the battery lasts as I've managed to get 500-560 shots out of one charge with the battery this camera comes with, which last me a few days this is with the display used all the time. I'm sure it will last up to 1000+ if you where to use the view finder.
            2. Its so easy to use if you are used to canon's more professional range of cameras as the layout is quite similar.
            3. The large aperture is a huge thing for when shooting in low light as it means you don't need to use such a high ISO.
            4. fits nicely in my front pocket and i still have room for everything else.

It is a quiet camera. The display on the manual mode is excellent. It tells me if I have too much or too little light.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I bought this camera in June after being a long time Canon user with both film and digital products. After using it for 30 days I fell in love with it. The resolution and clarity were amazing and it's low light capabilities were great. On a recent trip to Europe however, I got caught in a rainstorm in Cologne and stored the G16 in my backpack. After taking it out the camera wouldn't work. Now I realize that water is not good for electronics, but this camera was exposed to moisture and not to heavy rain directly. Certainly no more than my cell phone or DSLR. After returning it to Canon for repair and paying the $, I am very uneasy regarding taking it outside for fear of more damage. The Tech Rep at Canon stated that some moisture must have found it's way into a crevice somehow. I don't expect it to be weatherproof but I did expect better durability and support. My previous love for Canon products has now been tempered with some skepticism regarding their durability in an environment that may not be ideal. I will certainly be careful about using it for travel, nature or landscape photography and am looking for a more reliable advanced Point and Shoot camera to supplement my DSLR. Surprising as well was Canon's nonchalance and lack of concern.

I purchased my G16 in April 2014 and after using it several times, discovered I was having the same issues my G12 had, exposures that turned out completely white or under exposed images even though the flash functioned. I sent the camera back for warranty repair and hope that solves the problem. I hope the G16 doesn't have sensor issue like the G12!

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

Having owned large Canon SLRs for many years, I have been making the shift to smaller, lighter cameras that are easy to travel with. I purchased this camera for hiking and hunting. It has a very rugged feel to it. Picture quality is excellent and you have all of the manual controls you could want. My only criticism is that the design of the camera does not permit you to attach a UV filter to protect the lens.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

My wife and I picked up this little camera for traveling and adventures on the weekends. We use professional cameras for our day jobs but we wanted something smaller for traveling. This camera puts out RAW pro quality images packed into a very manageable camera. The camera can be for beginners or professionals. I wish it came with a wrist strap instead of a neck strap but that is very minor problem.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

Just received the G16 this week, in super fast time, great service from B&H, and it's a love affair
at first use. Currently am only using the auto mode based on an urgent need for photos. I can't wait to fully get familiar with all of the incredible features.
The video quality is also exceptional. Has a great sharp, crisp, and large view screen.
In any light situationn the color balance is spot on,
and in low light there's virtually no picture noise, simply outstanding. It's size and strap are comfortable to use and operate. One of the best cameras I've owned in over 50 years. Simply Love It!

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

As a proffesional photographer, I bought the G16 as a compact camera that would allow me to have all the manual control I like.

The fact that the lens retracts is a big space saver when fitting it into a pocket or the wifes purse.

The images are a bit noisy/grainy but that's to be expected from such a small sensor. The lens is fast though (F1.8 when wide), however, it doesn't close down past F8. The image stabilization is great, especially for video.

Another big plus for the camera is the fast x-sync of 1,2000th (although there are ways of getting partial shutter sync up to 1/4000th at half the power level)

The one thing I do expect from the G Series cameras (at their price point) is full, uncompromised manual control. While it gives you more manual control than a point and shoot, there are still things that Canon has done to partially cripple the camera. Shutter speed is limited to 1/2000th of a second unless you close down your aperture and make sure not to zoom in the whole way. Only if you close your aperture to 6.3 and zoom back can you achieve a shutter speed of 1/4000th of a second.

The camera menu and customization options are also very lacking with what you can do. Some obvoious things include turning on and off exposure simulation, manual exposure in video mode, as well as other things that seem obvious to a professioinal looking for a small everyday camera.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

The G16 is a small camera with features that serious amateurs and pros will like. It supports manual, aperture priority, shutter priority, and raw images. I had a G9 and the G16 is a big improvement. The sensor performs much better in low light with almost no noticeable noise up through ISO 800. The addition os WiFi is great too.
