I was looking for a camera that would give me good image quality without the size and bulk of my DSLR. I was also hoping for good low-light performance. I have purchased several Point & Shoot cameras and been disappointed with all. I prefer to capture in RAW mode so I can adjust the development of the image. The G16 affords me just that.
I took the camera with a group viewing the inside of an old historic building this weekend, I found at a 1x zoom I had excellent low light performance and could get an ISO of 80 in Aperture priority. However increasing to 5x quickly brought me to 3200 ISO and a noisy photo.
That is very likely a harsh and unfair judgement as the lighting was really bad and bottom line to keep a tolerable shutter speed a higher ISO was required. My friend with a Full Frame had the same experience. I did under expose the photo a few times which brought about a slow shutter speed. This required bracing the camera against a solid object to get a picture. This worked well and I got several good photos in a rather dark room without flash (not allowed) this way.
I found the View Finder difficult to use, but using the screen on back I could see the photo and all the necessary information required to create a great shot, this provided a very ergonomic picture taking experience, I would say I prefer it over my DSLR. Yes it can be done the same with my DSLR but the camera is too heavy to make it comfortable.
The image quality is easily as good as my DSLR. The f1.8 to f2.8 lens makes it a very good low light camera and an excellent outdoor camera. I intend to use it as my general walk around camera. I believe street photography may be calling me.
Overall I believe I will be using this camera as much as my DSLR.

Bought this camera as a complement to my SLR based on feature set and noticed the following:

Pros:
Practically no shutter lag
AF works well on first image and in low light
Good control over AF zones
Large aperture - good in low light
Battery lasts reasonably long
Good image quality despite moderate resolution
Intuitive UI (via screen)

Cons:
Autofocus during continuous shooting is garbage - 80% of photos taken with Continuous AF are blurry (BIGGEST issue I've seen in stark contrast with what Canon may make you believe the camera can do - admittedly G16 does not use phase contrast focusing)
Ergonomics could be better - primary issue is dial on back: registers click instead of turn half of the times
Retracted lens protected by flimsy baffles, no lens cap
Environmental sealing could be better
Can be stopped down to f/8 only (to be fair this is not bad for a P&S camera)
Some awkward limitations on setting ISO and/or aperture in portrait and HDR modes

Great camera if you don't need Continuous AF (Canon needs to improve this) and you don't get frustrated with the dial in the back. In my experience not useful for shooting series of photos of moving subjects.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I own several Nikon DSLR camera, but I found that I needed a small camera for when my wife and I go or a walk or hike. After several weeks of research, I settled for the Canon Powershot G16, and am happy with that choice. It fills the gap I was looking for. It packs a lot of camera in a small body. I wanted a point and shot that allowed me to shoot in raw, the G16 allows that. The zoom range is more than adequate for my needs, and the fast f1.8 lens allows for fast autofocus in low light shooting with excellent results. The one down side is the small optical viewfinder, but I rarely use that, so it is a non-issue for me. It is the camera I was looking for, and I highly recommend it.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

Years ago I had a Canon G7 and I loved it. I traded it and never forgot about it. I waited too long to get another Canon G. I love that you can use manual settings if you want to, but you can use auto settings, too, and still get great results. Pictures are crystal clear. This is a great camera for someone who had gotten used to using a DSLR but doesn't always want to carry around all the equipment. It would also be great for someone who would like to learn how to use manual settings and improve their photography skills but spend less money. I still love my DSLR but I find that I use this camera more often because it's so much more convenient.

Bought for my daughter to learn photography. The pictures it takes are fantastic! So easy to use, and so clear and detailed. It is small and easy to use, yet has a good zoom and does a pretty good wide angle. Battery life seems great so far. I was worried about spending $300 on something less than an SLR, but I would buy another one of these in an instant! I can't find anything to complain about it!

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I use this camera for quick snapshots, online images and many of my travel photos that are to be used for slide shows. I've made some very nice, large prints from it as well.

I've had G-series cameras since the early models. Drowned one on a rafting trip. They, like most digitals, don't like water.

Biggest problem I've had with them is the lens suddenly becoming stuck half way between extended and retracted. Something goes awry internally and they won't fully close nor open. Canon doesn't have a reasonable fix for this. Buy a new camera when it happens.

I bought the "lens shade/filter adapter" for my G16. I think that might help prevent bumps to the lens barrel as well as fingers accidentally hitting the lens leaves that open to expose the lens. Nice to have for a polarizer anyway. Without the shade/adapter the camera fits nicely into most any pocket without being too heavy. I rejected the G1 because of its weight and bulk for travel.

The G16 is quick to custom white balance.

Being able to capture in RAW, AdobeRGB and the conveniences as mentioned above were all there for me.

Seems interesting that it doesn't seem to be as sharp as it was when purchased. The lens is rather difficult to clean because it's so small and inset. I use small cotton swabs, lens tissue and cleaner. Maybe the lens is not as clean as it should be. I can't think of anything else that would reduce the image sharpness. I'm open for suggestions.

Battery life is much better than on many of my other DSLRs including, especially, my Sony a6000.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

I have a full size DSLR but is too heavy for my wife to use on road trips. We shoot from our moving car while cruising with our car club at highway speeds and winding roads. The pictures from this G16 camera come out sharp and in focus without camera shake 90% of the time. This camera has increased our good shots by 80%. The camera was bought for a specific purpose and has surpassed my expectations. Camera is a great all around camera.

I purchased this camera for an upcoming trip, and was very pleased with the performance over the couple weeks. I've had several Canon cameras before, and I was really impressed with the quality of the photos. The auto focus is also quick, seemingly quicker than my previous Canon. Battery life was extremely good, I only needed to change them once, and the charging is also quick. Finally, the startup time is also quick, so you can snap that shot before it's gone

Thus far I have been astounded by the quality of my shots in both manual and auto modes. Excellent in low light thanks to the CMOS sensor.I am a Mark 5 and EOS 100 Mark 11 user. This camerafills a much needed niche for me when I am not able to set up shots. Best little camera for the money that I have ever used!!

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

being stuck in a torrential downpour in West Vancouver over Xmas, I destroyed my camera, stupidly having it out for pictures. The Powershot G16 is a fabulous camera, point and shoot, or if you wish using the options, but auto mode is all you need for some great shots. I tried to replace with other cameras, nothing compared, so happy to have found B&H that still had this beauty available.

I saw a friend's shots from his G16, asked what he paid for it and knew I had to get one. I am still getting all the functions and options wired but am familiar with the Canon UE so it shouldn't take long. Very happy so far.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

Returned a Nikon Coolpix for this camera because image quality was poor and low light shooting with no flash was near impossible. I want the camera for travel and sometimes your not allowed to use flash indoors.

The G16 has much better image quality and low light photos have not been a problem. I mostly use the camera in manual, but like the hdr feature when I'm in a hurry.

Only two negatives for me are no articulating screen and a wish that it zoomed to 200mm. I can live with both of these negatives for the better image quality.

It does fit in my jeans pocket, but I'm a little afraid to keep it there because I don't want to damage the delicate lens cover. Fits fine in a coat pocket or sweat jacket pocket.

I'm very happy with this camera as an addition to my dslr and would recommend it to others.

I take it with me when I am out for a drive and I might see something to photograph. I take it to family get togethers and for just family trips. It takes great photos and I am able to share them on Facebook or have them printed at one of the online photo sites with ease.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

This camera has an optical view finder, shoots RAW, HD Video and a great image processor. This camera is great for when I don't want to take my full frame Nikon, like dinner or just walking around. The thing that sold me on it was the viewfinder. LCD screens just don't make me me feel comfortable getting the exact composition I want. I also like the 1,8 lens so that I can blur backgrounds. I would like to see the zoom go out a little farther like closer to 200mm but the range is still 95% perfect for what I need.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

If you now shoot DSLR's and are looking for a backup camera or want a compact camera for travel or just to put in your pocket for a walk, this is an excellent choice. It fits in a jacket or purse (perhaps a bit large for a pants pocket, though), is simple to use (especially if you're familiar with other Canon products), and has most of the features found on larger DSLR's. Picture quality is very good - though I would recommend using the 2-second delay to minimize camera shake. The current price is quite reasonable for what you get.

Comments about Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera:

We went on a trip to India and Sri Lanka recently, and I took the advice of many reviewers - I left my DSLR at home, and just took the G16.
I'm not sorry that I did - the results were really quite excellent, and it saved me carrying some heavy equipment all over southern Asia.

One major flaw was the absence of geotagging without having to spend an hour with the manual trying to figure out how to do it using WiFi with my smartphone as a 'bridge'. Even my smartphone geotags photos. I can't see the advantage of leaving out such an important (in my opinion) feature that would seem trivial to include. I'm certain this will annoy many users. I would recommend this camera to a friend, but explain about the lack of geotagging.
