I recently went to a garden show in a big indoor event center — fairly dim light, different kinds of lighting -- set the shutter speed and let the camera figure everything else out - and got great shots, of course a little grainy when you zoom in but clear at normal viewing size, and color decent too. I'm familiar with Canons so the UI is intuitive for me and I can use the manual controls without difficulty when I want to. I'm just very impressed with the clarity of the images - very crisp. And I love being able to shoot RAW images with my pocket camera. So far I haven't found anything I don't like. I broke an earlier version of this camera because I'd put my finger (to hold the camera) right where the flash pops up - top left of camera. Now the camera tells you to pop the flash up so - no more problem there. I've never figured manual focus with little cameras so I can't say if issues there are to do with the camera or me, but that area is a little tricky. I'm enjoying being able to use the touch screen to define the focal point - that is nifty. Very handy camera and I highly recommend it.

I am a fan of Canon - especially the S series - however, this newest incarnation is not at all what I expected after reading several reviews. I have an S95 which in my side by side comparison, beat the S120 in terms of color accuracy and sharpness. These are the most important aspects for me and the s120 failed. I tried adjusting color/sharpness/contrast/RGB balance which is buried in the cusotm color menu but it did not help enough. Reducing the green by -2 made an improvement. Setting sharpness to 5 (max) also helped, however, my S95 still produced sharper images at its default color/sharpness. The S120 does absorb much more light with its F1.8 lens but the effect is unnatural brightness and awful color with overexposed areas of white. At higher F-settings the image seemed to have less noise than the s95 but when examined closely it also lacked a great deal of sharpness along edges. I suspect that canon put a cheap but fast 1.8 lens to appease consumers and claim it was as fast as others. The S95, in comparison, has a CCD sensor which in conjunction with its F2.0 28mm lens produces very sharp images with gorgeous rich color. The reds are red - not leaning toward orange the way many later CMOS sensors seem to do.I bought the s120 for an upcoming vacation because it seemed like a good upgrade with the additional bonus of having 30p and 60p HD video - which I like to use when travelling. Actually, a short video test I did came out pretty decent with reasonable autofocusing when moving. But, as far as image quality, this camera was a major disappointment. I don't know if Canon is cutting corners but it seems that this camera is not up to the usual standards. I wanted to believe that this camera was a good idea but when compared to my old S95 it just didn't cut it. Perhaps if you view it in isolation you won't see a difference but I would think twice. On a positive note, though, it does start up very quickly, and seems to have no problem with focus in any light. The touchscreen is okay. But, its not good enough to be fast if the camera doesn't produce pleasing images. Too bad, Canon has a very good menu system logic. They just seemed to have gone downhill on this version.I would speculate that the older s110 is a better performing camera and its cheaper too. The s120 uses DIGIC 6 while the s110 and G15 use DIGIC 5. There is a difference. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has seen this difference when comparing. Thankfully, BHPhoto has excellent customer service and took it right back.

Comments about Canon Power Shot S120 Point-and-Shoot Camera:

I just purchased a second S 120 so that both Linda and I would have high grade cameras for our next long trip. The 5D iii and 70D's are great for driving around this country but cumbersome and heavy for airplane journeys. The S 120 has most of the features needed; is light weight; slips into a pocket for quick retrieval; and gives consistent great results. Sun glare is the only drawback. One must aim blindly when the screen is darkened.

Comments about Canon Power Shot S120 Point-and-Shoot Camera:

Although the camera's features are well suited to my needs and are the reason I have purchased this model as well as all but one of the previous models in this line, the cameras have been plagued with breakdowns, though the particular problems have varied from one model to the next. The problem with my current S120 is that when turned on, I see nothing, i.e., the viewing screen is blank. However, if knocked against a hard object, the screen starts to function normally. Alternatively, if just left on the screen suddenly becomes functional in a few minutes. Meanwhile, if photos are taken when the screen is blank, they show up as "normal." The problem with this particular camera is likely to be a loose connection, certainly different from the problem I any many others had with the S100 which was plagued by a lens which simply froze. What is amazing is that Canon has managed to produce a small camera with some excellent features allowing for photos that are very good considering the cameras compact size and yet it has failed to overcome quality control problems.

The camera is a bit wider and feels much firmer like a good point and shoot should. I like the pop-up flash which should help avoid red-eye. I am anxious to use it on a trip as a supplement to my Canon 7D.

Comments about Canon Power Shot S120 Point-and-Shoot Camera:

I just purchased a Canon S120 to replace a 4 year old S95 that gave its life in a dust storm. I like the S120 and S95's size, easily pocketable and convenient for quick photos from the car on the road. Reading the ads and specs and even some reviews, the S120 sounded like a clear winner in any comparison with the S95.

In actual use though I've gone from about 90% decent images (ones I don't discard) with the S95 to about 20% with the S120 and even those are closer to cheap department store digital cameras I owned a decade ago. I really wanted to like the S120, but it wouldn't hold up its end of the bargain.

My photos are usually taken in AUTO mode, since I take many of my scenic photos while driving. Even the best photos I've taken with the S120 have a softer focus and colors that are noticeably less vivid than the S95.

                As to the S120 improvements:
The image stabilization is reported as an improvement, but for photos taken from the car, it fares significantly worse than the S95.
The auto-focus is reported to be faster, but it frequently doesn't focus. At least 50% of the photos appear to not be focused on anything.
Photos taken indoors with typical house lighting are very grainy, and not sharply focused. The camera selects high ISO in this situation.
The dynamic range is reported to be higher due to the CMOS sensor, but all pictures I've taken outdoors in sunlight have areas that are washed out (overexposed) and other areas that are black to such an extent that they can't be adjusted out afterwards on the computer.
None of these were issues with the S95.

I'm still trying to find situations and conditions in which the S120 will work satisfactorily for me, but I haven't yet. I'm rating it 2 stars mainly for its portability. As for photo quality, it's not even in the same ballpark as the S95, or for for that matter any digital camera I've used in the last decade. If you've owned an S95, don't buy an S120 expecting similar performance.

Comments about Canon Power Shot S120 Point-and-Shoot Camera:

I bought the S120 for my wife, who was looking for an upgrade to an old point and shoot, but wanted one that still fit in the waist belt pocket of her pack. On paper this camera was better in every way than the one it was meant to replace.

The biggest concern we both had upon receiving it is that it is hard to hold. While not really snaller than her previous camera, it has no contours outside of a thin box. I found it hard to imagine holding it with sweaty hands while moving over uneven terrain, for example. My wife was dissapointed in the lack of even a rudimentary viewfinder. When her picture-taking experience wasn't rewarded with notably better pictures we returned the camera.

There was nothing 'bad' about the camera, perfectly serviceable except the handling as above, so I gave it 3 stars.

Comments about Canon Power Shot S120 Point-and-Shoot Camera:

I loved my Canon S110 and carried it everywhere on several trips to Europe. It worked well in low light without flash such as in art museums. After ruining the camera by dropping it with extended lens onto concrete, I looked at other options but kept coming back to the Canon S120. Although it's nearly identical to the S110, which it replaced, it has a more substantial feel. It's size is comfortable to carry in a jacket pocket. I'm very happy with the picture quality and very rarely carry my heavy SLR anymore.

Comments about Canon Power Shot S120 Point-and-Shoot Camera:

Purchased this based on recommendation and reviews of its video quality. Very impressed with the video, low light photography is okay but not what I read I would receive. Overall I'm impressed.

Comments about Canon Power Shot S120 Point-and-Shoot Camera:

This camera is great, fits in my pocket, great image quality, video capabilities are phenomenal for a camera of this size. Battery life isn't the greatest, but it's a small camera, so I just remember to keep it charged.

Not compatible with Canon CameraConnect app

Comments about Canon Power Shot S120 Point-and-Shoot Camera:

I bought the camera just to have a little point and shoot to use for outdoor pole photography (real estate). According to the Canon website it showed that this camera was compatible. Well, the website isn't designed very well. As it happens, of the more than dozen cameras shown on the website to be compatible with the app, not all are compatible with EACH of the 4 functions of the app. This camera was not compatible with the remote shooting function, the one function that I needed. Canon has since been working with me to exchange this camera for a one that has the functions I need AND is compatible with all functions of the app. Btw, the CameraConnect app, once working in conjunction with a compatible camera, works flawlessly but I'm not seeing any way to change aperture, shutter speed or ISO via the app.
