The first thing that will strike you when you open the box is how large the lens is. 72mm lens cover size. Its not heavy, just large. If I want to go compact with my NEX 6, I will use my kit lens. For me the size of this lens is NOT an issue, but many NEX owners bought the camera for its compact nature and may find this a deal breaker.
Weight of the lens: I have installed the supplied Sony neck strap that came with the camera. It is relatively narrow, but considering the weight of the stock camera, it has worked well for me. I can attest that with this lens attached, I walked around for 3 hours with the stock Sony neck strap and the combined weight did not bother me at all.
Next issue would be price. Not necessarily the stand alone price of this lens, but for the buyer who is coming into the NEX market, they may find the combined costs for the body and lens steep. For $1,350.00 you have other options out there for a body and comparable focal range lens. You have to really have bought into the NEX look and feel to make this your first purchase. I personally have been completely smitten by the NEX 6 and would have no other camera and both of the above listed negatives don't matter to me but if I didn't have the love for this camera......
I have used the lens for two shoots so far. The first was a portrait shoot. The large lens size does give off a more professional appearance to the model. The F4 aperture seemed to work fine for the shoot. I used two flashes with a handheld speed of 1/160 and it forced me to use a 400 ISO for correct exposure. I prefer a 200 ISO as this seems to be the sweet spot for the NEX6 but the pictures still came out fine. Focusing was surprisingly fast. At a shooting distance of 8' the depth of field focal range is around 6" so you can get a nice sharp image across most of the head. You will not get a completely washed out background but its blurred out enough. This lens will be great for family portraits because you need the greater depth of field for multiple stacked groups of people. For single subject shoots, I would prefer a larger aperture for that nice blown out background look.
Next shoot was a handheld shoot on a beach. I found the zoom feature to be very quick. The entire zoom feature is enclosed which I really liked. If you shut the camera off for a bit, then turn it back on, the lens returns to 18mm. I understand the need to retract in other lens but this lens has no exposed moving portions. The zoom is quite fast so it wasn't a huge drawback. I kinda wish it reset in the middle of its zoom range which would give me the option to go in either direction much faster for a quick draw snapshot. It only has one zoom speed that I could tell but again, it was pretty fast.
I shot some high contrast scenes across the entire zoom range and was surprised that I saw VERY little purple fringing....like barely there at all, and probably the best lens I have owned for this type of shot. I can say I noticed a little softness to the lens...BUT...after checking out my camera settings, I saw that I had done this entire shoot in the portrait mode. I am not positive but I highly suspect the images will be much sharper if I had set the camera in landscape or any other setting than the soft portrait setting. Even so, the pictures turned out really nice even in portrait mode. Birds feathers showed enough detail to make me happy. I also photographed flying seagulls as they took off from a stand still. The lens was able to track and focus very well and I got probably 75% of those shots in focus (not always framed the best though :) ) I shot @ a 4000 shutter speed, 200 Iso, and of course f4. Barrel distortion is handled better than the kit lens @ 18mm. So far, I can not see a reason why I will use another lens on my camera unless I have a specialty use. If this lens were f2.8, I'm pretty sure it would never come off.

I want to like this lens more than I do but it has its compromises. The size is very manageable with the A6000, it's not heavy at all, but with it, you can't use the flash for fear of shadows. That's a big drawback. The pics have been very clear and sharp, but there is noticeable vignetting at the corners. It being a power zoom, there's no scale to tell you what focal length you're at, just a little zoom gauge in the viewfinder. No for me. I know I need to use it a bit more before I decide if I will keep it but one might be better served with a few prime lenses instaed of this, in a non-video capacity anyway. Build quality is very very high by the way, so at least you feel like you've gotten what you paid for. And B&H is always great to do business with, in my experience.

Works quite well on the Sony A6300 as an all-around lens, zoom is smooth and silent, great for video, sharp. Feels solid. Could be less expensive.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I am loving this lens . It is a very well made lens. Im using it with my Sony A6300 and its a perfect combo. The pictures are tack sharp. I have the 50mm 1.8 and the kit lens 16-55, but I think this will be on my camera 90% of the time. Focusing is smooth and quiet. Some have said its too heavy, but I don't find that to be the case. Just a great all around lens , and at f4 you still can get a little bokeh.

Decent Lens for the Money

By Bill

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I own a 5D Mark II as my primary camera and a a6300 as a secondary camera. As a Canon user, I've become accustomed to the quality of their L-series lenses. This Sony lens is pretty good, but it doesn't compare to a Canon lens costing twice as much, obviously. I have found it to be a good lens to use while on vacation, as it covers wide to telephoto really well. The bokeh it produces is pleasant to the eye too. It has definite positives, so it's a good purchase, as long as you understand the image quality isn't going to compare favorably against much more expensive lenses.

I just hope it had a MF/AF button.

Awesome lens for The A6300 for The price

By LascanioPhoto.com

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

This is a great lens, great range, decent aperture of f4 throughout the whole lens and a great combination with the a6300. The only downside is the electronic zoom and focus which is not as fast and versatile as you wish but for the price this is a great lens for APSC cameras. Really happy.

Beautiful Lens

By Justin

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I bought this lens in conjunction with my Sony a6300 and what an absolutely beautiful pairing. The lens is well constructed with mostly metal parts making it feel and look a lot more expensive than it is and for the price you really do get something special. Images are pin sharp. Amazing depth of field. Fantastic colours.

For photos I used the manual zoom which is super smooth but am also able to use the remote on my Sony tripod when connected to the camera to control remote zooming which is going to be a huge plus when shooting video to achieve smooth zoom throughout it's range. Love this lens!

Turns the Sony 6300 into a great travel camera

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

This lens in the perfect match for the 6300. It is sharp and gives consistently good results. I use to carry my Canon full size DSLR with a 28-200 lens when traveling. The 6300 combination's size and clarity now make it my prime choice. I also use this lens on the 6300 as a back up for my Sony Alpha 7R2 when I am in a "must get the shot" situation.

Excellent lens...but with some concerns.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

This lens was sold out for a long time, but when it came back in stock it was worth the wait. I bought it for my Sony a6300. First, the build quality and construction of this lens is simply amazing, especially for the very affordable price!!! I like that the autofocus and power zoom are very quiet. This lens is definitely made for video but takes very professional stills. For video is was perfect but I did notice some vignetting during stills when using the included lens hood. For outdoors it's imperative for me to use the lens hood on all my cameras. Holding the camera with the right hand and supporting the lens with the left hand presents a small problem. The focus ring and manual zoom ring turn too easily and while supporting the lens with my left hand I had a tendency to accidentally touch either the focus or zoom ring which messed up my shot. With my Nikon DSLR I've never had to be careful how I supported the lens. With the Sony a6300 and this lens I have to hold the camera a different way to avoid touching the focus and zoom rings. Other than that I love this lens and it has excellent Bokeh. Great overall value.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I have purchased this lens to use it for video with my A7s camera. I only had the 16-35 f/4 and I was longing for a zoom. Though this lens is not a full frame lens in crop mode it works perfectly and the zoom gets even further. I love the electronic zoom funcion, it works really well. I can switch my camera to auto focus and I can just control the zoom just like on a normal video camera. The picture quality is great.

Just what I needed

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I needed a workhorse lens for my Sony FS-7 for live events and run and gun. Zoomable with plenty fast enough autofocus. Sure 2.8 would have been nice but for the price f4 is not bad at all.

not perfect, but good value

By csmyers

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I bought this used from BH a couple weeks back. I bought it for video work and so far I'm really glad I went for it. The best feature in my opinion, besides the fixed f/4 aperture, is the stabilization. It works AMAZINGLY. I can make a hip slide look like I was using a real slider. Even handheld at 105mm is acceptable.

As for downsides, I'm not in love with the power zoom. Initially I was afraid I wouldn't be able to zoom as fast as I wanted, but I found that if I didn't turn the zoom ring as fast, it works well enough. The lag is negligible and the ring turns smoothly.

In hand, the lens appears to weigh just a hair less than my a6000. It balances well, but I still DON'T like the size. My camera bag is noticeably heavier when this lens is in there, but I guess I'm used to the extraordinarily lightweight lenses Sony typically offers.

Distortion is well corrected and DOES keep up with the zoom speed, unlike correction on the kit 16-50.

Overall, I feel much more confident in my abilities as a videographer/cinematographer with this lens. I haven't been missing the super shallow depth of field, I have cheap small primes for that. f/4 is just fine for most of my work.

Would I like having the Zeiss 16-70mm? Yes. Is it worth the extra money for the smaller size and weight? No.

Pros

  • Durable
  • Fast / accurate auto-focus
  • fixed aperture
  • internal focus and zoom, so less dust uptake
  • Strong Construction

Cons

  • longer than the original sel18200 zoom collapsed
  • no remote app zoom control

Best Uses

  • Video

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

The version of smart remote current as of 6/6/16 [both ios and android versions] will not allow usable remote control of the zoom function of this lens. Holding and/or repeated tapping the zoom icon in the app only results in the most minor -- nearly imperceptible -- change in zoom -- the absolute lowest zoom speed the lens can perform. I estimate it would take many minutes to go from full wide to full tele. It is not a problem with my copy or hardware -- once I asked the question, several others reported the same issue, and no one indicated they did not have the issue.

The 16-50 PZ kit lens behaves OK with the app, and I just assumed this lens would do the same. It does not. As remote zoom was a primary motivator for my purchase, I am returning it rather than wait for a potential app update that may never come.

I still list it as 'recommend' -- as long as the buyer is aware of this one significant, and very likely unexpected limitation.
