The first thing that will strike you when you open the box is how large the lens is. 72mm lens cover size. Its not heavy, just large. If I want to go compact with my NEX 6, I will use my kit lens. For me the size of this lens is NOT an issue, but many NEX owners bought the camera for its compact nature and may find this a deal breaker.
Weight of the lens: I have installed the supplied Sony neck strap that came with the camera. It is relatively narrow, but considering the weight of the stock camera, it has worked well for me. I can attest that with this lens attached, I walked around for 3 hours with the stock Sony neck strap and the combined weight did not bother me at all.
Next issue would be price. Not necessarily the stand alone price of this lens, but for the buyer who is coming into the NEX market, they may find the combined costs for the body and lens steep. For $1,350.00 you have other options out there for a body and comparable focal range lens. You have to really have bought into the NEX look and feel to make this your first purchase. I personally have been completely smitten by the NEX 6 and would have no other camera and both of the above listed negatives don't matter to me but if I didn't have the love for this camera......
I have used the lens for two shoots so far. The first was a portrait shoot. The large lens size does give off a more professional appearance to the model. The F4 aperture seemed to work fine for the shoot. I used two flashes with a handheld speed of 1/160 and it forced me to use a 400 ISO for correct exposure. I prefer a 200 ISO as this seems to be the sweet spot for the NEX6 but the pictures still came out fine. Focusing was surprisingly fast. At a shooting distance of 8' the depth of field focal range is around 6" so you can get a nice sharp image across most of the head. You will not get a completely washed out background but its blurred out enough. This lens will be great for family portraits because you need the greater depth of field for multiple stacked groups of people. For single subject shoots, I would prefer a larger aperture for that nice blown out background look.
Next shoot was a handheld shoot on a beach. I found the zoom feature to be very quick. The entire zoom feature is enclosed which I really liked. If you shut the camera off for a bit, then turn it back on, the lens returns to 18mm. I understand the need to retract in other lens but this lens has no exposed moving portions. The zoom is quite fast so it wasn't a huge drawback. I kinda wish it reset in the middle of its zoom range which would give me the option to go in either direction much faster for a quick draw snapshot. It only has one zoom speed that I could tell but again, it was pretty fast.
I shot some high contrast scenes across the entire zoom range and was surprised that I saw VERY little purple fringing....like barely there at all, and probably the best lens I have owned for this type of shot. I can say I noticed a little softness to the lens...BUT...after checking out my camera settings, I saw that I had done this entire shoot in the portrait mode. I am not positive but I highly suspect the images will be much sharper if I had set the camera in landscape or any other setting than the soft portrait setting. Even so, the pictures turned out really nice even in portrait mode. Birds feathers showed enough detail to make me happy. I also photographed flying seagulls as they took off from a stand still. The lens was able to track and focus very well and I got probably 75% of those shots in focus (not always framed the best though :) ) I shot @ a 4000 shutter speed, 200 Iso, and of course f4. Barrel distortion is handled better than the kit lens @ 18mm. So far, I can not see a reason why I will use another lens on my camera unless I have a specialty use. If this lens were f2.8, I'm pretty sure it would never come off.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

Purchased this lens to use with Sony A6000. I was used to using a Sony 16-105mm with my A77 and wanted the convenience of the range for street photography. Since there is a G grade Sony lens it appears to be sharper than the 16-105,, but I do miss the 16 mm wide end. The lens focus is all internal and makes it less conspicuous than a protruding zoom.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I'm using on A6000. Lens is sharp, IS works great, nice contrast and color. Some say this lens is not so good at F4, however my copy is very good from F4, slightly soft in corners, but better than my other lens especially at the wide end. Very surprised at how good the lens is.

I haven't had much chance to use this lens yet, but I am well impressed with it's operation. The AF and power zoom are very quiet, and should be ideal for videos (which is what I bought it for). It is rather large, although not heavy, and the fit and finish are excellent.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

Purchased for two reasons. To improve the quality I was getting from the kit zoom and to have a single go-to lens. The SELP18105G did not disappoint.

          *AF is quick
*The lens is very sharp with some softening towards the edge. Those that want even sharper images should look at primes. There will always be trade off for the convenience of carrying one lens.
*Though it is large, it is light and since zooming is internal, it never becomes unwieldy.

Many mention the distortion, but it is corrected in camera or in post with lens profile; not an issue on NEX cameras.
People complain about what it isn't, instead of looking at what it is. It is a constant f/4 6X Zoom. It has fast AF (for a em-mount). It is relatively inexpensive with very good optics and excellent build quality.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I really wanted to like this lens. It is compact, reasonably light, constant aperture of f4, does not extend the barrel with zooming. And even a good balance with my NEX 7. But in the end I had to send it back because of the excessive pincushion distortion. It went from bad to worst as I zoomed out.
To their credit B&H refunded my money. If you are going to shoot only stills and want to go to the trouble of correcting lens distortion then you will be OK.
But I shoot video about 50% of the time and the distortion was NG.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

This lens may not be good for the FS series cameras, but it is great for the NEX series. The NEX cameras have a menu item that lets you correct for CA. shading, and distortion for certain lenses. They all work with this lens, however the distortion item is grayed out because it is always on. You never see any distortion before you snap your picture like in other E lenses, which process the correction after the shot is taken. This lens corrects all distortion before the shot is taken. It also makes all corrections during video capture. The zoom motor is just like advertised, it is very quiet and if you have steady fingers, you can make a very slow crawl zoom. For stills, the smart zoom (2X) is a continuation of the optical zoom. Going from optical zoom to smart zoom causes a slight jerk in the zooming process but does not matter since the smart zoom seems to be disabled for video capture. The pictures are sharp and have very little CA or vignetting. The best item for my use is the ability to auto-track focus smoothly on relatively fast moving items. Using a follow focus on this lens is confusing due to it's endless focus throw. But it is good for performing rack focus. It is light, sharp and a joy to use. Pretty good so far, still testing.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I have been waiting for this lens for two years. I always wanted more zoom range than the kit lens has and I wanted a variable power zoom for video.

This lens let you zoom the normal way, by twisting the lens or you can zoom using the switch. With a little practice you can get very slow (dramatic) zooms. I mean really slow. Very cool. You can also zoom quickly when you need to. It does take a little practice to get the results you want.

The lens is pretty big but it isn't too heavy. The colors are nice, contrast is good, and the pics are reasonably sharp. They need very little processing in Lightroom. Thankfully, LR5 can fix any distortion you run into so that is not a problem as long as you shoot raw.

The 18-105 focal length is perfect for a walk around lens. I wish it had a closer focusing distance but with 24 megapixels I can always crop a little and still get a file big enough for large prints.

I will continue to test it and update my review as I use the lens more. I just wanted to jump in here so Nex7 users don't get scared away by all the negative reviews of people trying to use this on their video cameras. I hope they get a firmware update to fix their problem.

I will rarely have to remove this from my Nex7. The only time I see myself taking it off the Nex7 is when I want to shoot macro.

Thank you Sony for making a very useful lens that is reasonably priced. It was worth the wait. I am very happy with my purchase.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

If I only had my NEX-EA50, this lens would get 5 stars. But, like many others, I was hoping to use this lens with my NEX-FS700 as well. This lens DOES NOT WORK with the FS100 or FS700! This lens requires in-camera software correction to correct extreme pin-cushioning in the optics. Check the Sony website for the lens to find out if your camera will work with it. The EA50 has the correction and looks fine. The auto focus and face detection is fast and accurate. The servo zoom is MUCH faster than the 18-200mm kit lens for the EA50. Constant f/4 is great. All-in-all, a great value lens to help my EA50 become my go-to run-and-gun camera. Unfortunately, I can't swap it to my FS700.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I am updating this review, having read reviews from others. This lens does have very noticeable pincushion distortion at mid and long focal lengths. However, this is instantly and fully corrected in Lightroom 5 by scrolling (in Develop mode) to Lens Corrections and clicking on Enable Profile Corrections. Impressive that immediately with December 15, 2013 release of this new lens, Lr5 recognized it and had software for corrections. That's why Lr has this feature. So BEWARE and use your SOFTWARE.Electronic corrections have provided lens designers more freedom with zoom lenses.Zoom lenses are prone to distortion. New "wonder" compact zoom lens designs are meant to be used with electronic corrections. This lens has internal zooming to keep length and balance point close to camera (important on the slim Nex, and internal zooming should keep dust from getting pumped into lens). Those who shoot jpg get in-camera corrections. We who shoot RAW must apply corrections in our computers. Results are excellent. The beauty of this lens is it's slick function in the field. Remember the Hubble telescope? Shortly after placement in orbit, crippling distortion from faulty assembly was apparent. Electronic corrections even solved that. There is nothing wrong with using electronic corrections. Everything we do in Lr or similar programs is electronic correction.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I normally use a full frame Nikon DSLR with f/2.8 lenses. However it gets very heavy and bulky to travel with for extended trips. I purchased the Sony NEX 7 with 3 lenses (10-18mm, 18-55mm and 55-200mm) to serve as a light weight camera system. For a walk around lens, I found the 18-55mm lens a little short; so I often was changing to the 55-200mm lens. I thought the 18-105mm would be a good replacement and a quality upgrade since it was an f/4. However I found the diameter of the lens was too large and it shadowed the flash (without the lens shade). Since I sometime need the flash for inside pictures and I did not want to add the bulk of an external flash, I returned the lens. If the on camera flash is not a concern of your, then I would highly recommend the lens.

When used on the FS700 this lens displays major pillow distortion. It is unuseable and I returned it.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

                      Most useful: Everything except macro.
Most unique: Internal zooming (and focus) so dusty air is not pumped into lens and camera.

This may be the first review of this lens to appear online. Received lens one week ago and have put it through its paces on a Nex 7, shooting RAW and processing in Lr5.

Images are crisp and well contrasted. Auto focus is instantaneous and silent. Zooming is quick by either twisting the zoom ring or with the motorized drive. Focus and exposure, and hence image in viewfinder, remain stable during zoom.

When using a circular polarizer stacked atop a UV filter, and at wide angle focal length, there is slight vignetting, but not with but one filter.

I bought this lens for video work with an FS700. On paper this lens was exactly what I had been waiting 2 years for. Light weight, constant aperture, internal focusing, IS, servo zoom, par focal and a great short zoom range. Everything you would want for doing verite style video work. Construction is a little less solid than I would have expected for a G series lens, but what really broke my heart is the SEVERE pin cushion distortion at every focal length. I would have gladly paid 3-4 times as much for a lens that actually maintained the quality level of the G line. The lens may be fine for stills on an NEX point and shoot but it's useless on a video camera.

Reasonably fast and sharp. The power zoom is pretty much silent. While it is a bit on the large side when paired with a NEX body it feels very balanced. I would have preferred to see a 2.8 aperture, it's still a very nice lens for under $.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I bought this lens with great anticipation. It was the perfect fit and size for my Sony NEX-FS700. I had a 72-77 step-up adapter lying around that made this lens fit perfectly into my Vocas MB-250 mattbox. Made in heaven I thought. I was thrilled at this point. I soon found out after firing up the camera that at about the 50mm point the lens started to distort the image inwardly. Sort of the "slimming lens" people jokingly ask for. If you point the camera at vertical objects like doors or grandfather clocks the image is truly distorted. Some are calling this the "pin cushion" effect. This makes the lens NOT USABLE on the FS series of cameras. I tried it on the FS100, my own FS700 as well as the newer FS700R as well. I was hoping the later firmware in the R would somehow correct for this. It did not. The only thing the R did differently was operate the zoom with the cameras rocker handle. This lens is will not zoom with my FS700 handle running out of the box firmware. Unfortunately this lens used with the FS700R still has the pin cushion effect. Sony should have stated somewhere that this lens and perhaps others like it are NOT compatible with the FS series of cameras. I do hope Sony updates the lens or the firmware in the FS cameras to overcome this problem. This lens is a great size, weight, zoom ratio and I loved the fact that it was an internal zoom lens. I have since returned this lens. Hoping to see a fix in the near future. Just because it's an e-mount lens doesn't mean it will work on all e-mount cameras. I guess I found that out.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

Great IQ and really useful power zoom range, and very effective OSS. Sort of dissappointed that the lens apparently does not support phase detection AF on the NEX 6.

This lens maybe OK for NEX cameras, as they have internal Lens correction for it, but it's absolutely NOT good for video camcorders Sony FS100 and FS700.... ( maybe Sony will make softwar update for it, but I'm not sure it's possible )
