The first thing that will strike you when you open the box is how large the lens is. 72mm lens cover size. Its not heavy, just large. If I want to go compact with my NEX 6, I will use my kit lens. For me the size of this lens is NOT an issue, but many NEX owners bought the camera for its compact nature and may find this a deal breaker.
Weight of the lens: I have installed the supplied Sony neck strap that came with the camera. It is relatively narrow, but considering the weight of the stock camera, it has worked well for me. I can attest that with this lens attached, I walked around for 3 hours with the stock Sony neck strap and the combined weight did not bother me at all.
Next issue would be price. Not necessarily the stand alone price of this lens, but for the buyer who is coming into the NEX market, they may find the combined costs for the body and lens steep. For $1,350.00 you have other options out there for a body and comparable focal range lens. You have to really have bought into the NEX look and feel to make this your first purchase. I personally have been completely smitten by the NEX 6 and would have no other camera and both of the above listed negatives don't matter to me but if I didn't have the love for this camera......
I have used the lens for two shoots so far. The first was a portrait shoot. The large lens size does give off a more professional appearance to the model. The F4 aperture seemed to work fine for the shoot. I used two flashes with a handheld speed of 1/160 and it forced me to use a 400 ISO for correct exposure. I prefer a 200 ISO as this seems to be the sweet spot for the NEX6 but the pictures still came out fine. Focusing was surprisingly fast. At a shooting distance of 8' the depth of field focal range is around 6" so you can get a nice sharp image across most of the head. You will not get a completely washed out background but its blurred out enough. This lens will be great for family portraits because you need the greater depth of field for multiple stacked groups of people. For single subject shoots, I would prefer a larger aperture for that nice blown out background look.
Next shoot was a handheld shoot on a beach. I found the zoom feature to be very quick. The entire zoom feature is enclosed which I really liked. If you shut the camera off for a bit, then turn it back on, the lens returns to 18mm. I understand the need to retract in other lens but this lens has no exposed moving portions. The zoom is quite fast so it wasn't a huge drawback. I kinda wish it reset in the middle of its zoom range which would give me the option to go in either direction much faster for a quick draw snapshot. It only has one zoom speed that I could tell but again, it was pretty fast.
I shot some high contrast scenes across the entire zoom range and was surprised that I saw VERY little purple fringing....like barely there at all, and probably the best lens I have owned for this type of shot. I can say I noticed a little softness to the lens...BUT...after checking out my camera settings, I saw that I had done this entire shoot in the portrait mode. I am not positive but I highly suspect the images will be much sharper if I had set the camera in landscape or any other setting than the soft portrait setting. Even so, the pictures turned out really nice even in portrait mode. Birds feathers showed enough detail to make me happy. I also photographed flying seagulls as they took off from a stand still. The lens was able to track and focus very well and I got probably 75% of those shots in focus (not always framed the best though :) ) I shot @ a 4000 shutter speed, 200 Iso, and of course f4. Barrel distortion is handled better than the kit lens @ 18mm. So far, I can not see a reason why I will use another lens on my camera unless I have a specialty use. If this lens were f2.8, I'm pretty sure it would never come off.

I'm using this lens with a Sony a6000. I bought it to replace a lens that wasn't compatible with the camera. I wasn't sure about the power zoom, but I really like it, plus you can manually zoom if you want too. It is sharp. I haven't had it too long, but so far it has been great!

      Versatile and good value

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I use it on an A6000, mainly in a small studio setting with external flash. Pictures are great, on par with the SEL35F18 @ f4. Portraits are sharp and the prints look awesome.
When using the remote app from my iPhone, it's pretty cool to be able to control zoom and focus remotely!!
Beware that this lens with the pop-up flash will produce a shadow. Use an external flash or point the pop-up flash upwards.
Also, when the camera powers down, it resets the focal length to 18mm.
Besides this minor things, its a great lens.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

Although I use the lens for portraits, food, street photography, and architecture, my main reason for buying it was for travel. On a cruise last year, I carried my Nikon D610 with the 28x300mm lens. I was thrilled with the pictures from the Nikon, but the weight of the camera and lens bore down on my neck.

For a backup camera and for my trips, I purchased the Sony A6000 with the kit lens. The Sony and the new lens will be much easier to carry. I'm very pleased with the quality and the build of the 18-105. Since I use the A6000 for occasional videos, I appreciate the smooth power zoom.

For me, it's a perfect complement to the Nikon. I love them both!

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I have only used it few time so far but on the new Sony PXW-FS7 the SELP18105 works well. The only complaint most of us have is the fly by wire focus ring. Video shooters tend to not use AutoFocus so we need a mechanically connected focus ring.

With the built in lens correction in the FS7, the SELP18105 is sharp and the controls on the handgrip work for zoom and Iris. Not the fault of the lens but the FS7 will only correct aberations up to 1080p. Don't forget to turn on lens correction as it is off by default in the FS7.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

This was purchased (1) to give me a longer lens for my a6000 than the kit lens, (2) to get the highest quality single lens covering medium wide to medium tele so I can go out with one lens (after all, a major reason for mirrorless is light weight), and (3) to have a fast lens for hand held telephoto. All this without weighing too much and still having motorized zoom for the occasional video. (2) and (3) argued for the 18105G instead of one of the 18-200 alternatives, and I'm extremely happy with the quality of the image when shooting handheld in somewhat low light at F4. It is surprisingly light, only a little heavier than the body, and is very quiet when zooming. I chose based upon online reviews, and was not mislead -- great lens.
As others have noted, the large first glass (72mm) obstructs the light from the flash if the zoom is wider than 50mm. However for indoor flash I found I could easily tip the spring loaded built-in flash up towards the ceiling with one finger, and the bounce flash showed no light obstruction, and gives softer lighting as well.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

Purchased this lens to use with a6000 mainly because it covered the same approximate range as my Canon 24-105mm ƒ4. I've been very pleased with the lens so far after making about 200 prints. Lens is lightweight, sharp, focuses quickly and easy to use. Although the power zoom works just fine, I would prefer a manual zoom, especially since the camera always defaults the lens to 18mm on startup. I noticed some reviews criticize this lens and other Sony lens for distortion, CA and lack of sharpness in the corners. If you're shooting RAW, and why wouldn't you, then Camera Raw should take care of the CA and the distortion if you use the provided lens profile. Corner sharpness was not that much of a concern for me since I don't tend to put the subject of my photos in the corners. Great lens and camera combination. About all I need for a day of general photography. The lightweight of the lens and camera make it a pleasure to carry. Some days you just don't want to lug around a Canon 5DMII and a lens.

Sony 18-105 mm F4 OSS Lens

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I am a former professional photographer. I am now an avid amatuer. I bought the Sony Nex 6 camera a couple of months ago and the Sony 18-105mm to use as my standard lens. While the lens is agreat piece of glass, for me it defeated the purpose of having a mirrorless system. The lens is long and heavy and makes the camera very unwieldly to carry around your neck. You have to have a camera bag or a fanny pack if you want to use this as a travel lens. It does take great photos and has easy to use controls. However, for me it was not the right fit as I wanted something much lighter and more compact as a travel lens. I bought the 18-55mm kit lens to use for most situations. I will buy a longer lens when an appropriate focal lenght is available.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I want to like this lens more than I do but it has its compromises. The size is very manageable with the A6000, it's not heavy at all, but with it, you can't use the flash for fear of shadows. That's a big drawback. The pics have been very clear and sharp, but there is noticeable vignetting at the corners. It being a power zoom, there's no scale to tell you what focal length you're at, just a little zoom gauge in the viewfinder. No for me. I know I need to use it a bit more before I decide if I will keep it but one might be better served with a few prime lenses instaed of this, in a non-video capacity anyway. Build quality is very very high by the way, so at least you feel like you've gotten what you paid for. And B&H is always great to do business with, in my experience.

I've shot a couple events and one trip, and this is a great lens. Its very sharp, versatile and bright. Yes, its large vs. other eMount lenses but its such a great lens, you'll get over its size quickly. Its my new 'photo travel' lens (I'll keep my 16-50 lens for when i need a really small size camera). My only wish is that it wouldn't return to 18mm everytime its switched off (minus 1 star for this - hopefully Sony will change that with a firmware update - hear that Sony?).

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

Other reviewers have described this as a large heavy lens. While it is larger than other NEX lens it balances on the camera great and not really that heavy. This is a very well designed and built lens. Have used this both for photo and video on a NEX-7 with super results. Compared to regular DSLR (other camera is Canon 60D w/18-135) this is such a handy workable combination. Have made super enlargements and crops with this lens. My only comment (kind of a complaint) is - 1, the zoom switch is on the side for underhand grip but I always use a small camera with overhand grip so the switch should be naturally on top of the lens, and - 2, since it is all electric drive it always returns to WA when switched off, turning on takes a few seconds to restore both the screen and reset the drive motors. Other than that this is the perfect lens. Good zoom range for still & video and constant f4 is great. Would be interesting to test against the Zeiss. Very satisfied with operation and results.

Purchased this lens to use with Sony A6000. I was used to using a Sony 16-105mm with my A77 and wanted the convenience of the range for street photography. Since there is a G grade Sony lens it appears to be sharper than the 16-105,, but I do miss the 16 mm wide end. The lens focus is all internal and makes it less conspicuous than a protruding zoom.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

Purchased for two reasons. To improve the quality I was getting from the kit zoom and to have a single go-to lens. The SELP18105G did not disappoint.

                  *AF is quick
*The lens is very sharp with some softening towards the edge. Those that want even sharper images should look at primes. There will always be trade off for the convenience of carrying one lens.
*Though it is large, it is light and since zooming is internal, it never becomes unwieldy.

Many mention the distortion, but it is corrected in camera or in post with lens profile; not an issue on NEX cameras.
People complain about what it isn't, instead of looking at what it is. It is a constant f/4 6X Zoom. It has fast AF (for a em-mount). It is relatively inexpensive with very good optics and excellent build quality.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I had previously reviewed this lens and given it 4 stars, marking it down one star because it was not compatible with the NEX 6's phase detection AF. Now with NEX 6 firmware version 1.03 it is compatible. Upgraded to 5 stars.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I really wanted to like this lens. It is compact, reasonably light, constant aperture of f4, does not extend the barrel with zooming. And even a good balance with my NEX 7. But in the end I had to send it back because of the excessive pincushion distortion. It went from bad to worst as I zoomed out.
To their credit B&H refunded my money. If you are going to shoot only stills and want to go to the trouble of correcting lens distortion then you will be OK.
But I shoot video about 50% of the time and the distortion was NG.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

This lens may not be good for the FS series cameras, but it is great for the NEX series. The NEX cameras have a menu item that lets you correct for CA. shading, and distortion for certain lenses. They all work with this lens, however the distortion item is grayed out because it is always on. You never see any distortion before you snap your picture like in other E lenses, which process the correction after the shot is taken. This lens corrects all distortion before the shot is taken. It also makes all corrections during video capture. The zoom motor is just like advertised, it is very quiet and if you have steady fingers, you can make a very slow crawl zoom. For stills, the smart zoom (2X) is a continuation of the optical zoom. Going from optical zoom to smart zoom causes a slight jerk in the zooming process but does not matter since the smart zoom seems to be disabled for video capture. The pictures are sharp and have very little CA or vignetting. The best item for my use is the ability to auto-track focus smoothly on relatively fast moving items. Using a follow focus on this lens is confusing due to it's endless focus throw. But it is good for performing rack focus. It is light, sharp and a joy to use. Pretty good so far, still testing.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I have been waiting for this lens for two years. I always wanted more zoom range than the kit lens has and I wanted a variable power zoom for video.

This lens let you zoom the normal way, by twisting the lens or you can zoom using the switch. With a little practice you can get very slow (dramatic) zooms. I mean really slow. Very cool. You can also zoom quickly when you need to. It does take a little practice to get the results you want.

The lens is pretty big but it isn't too heavy. The colors are nice, contrast is good, and the pics are reasonably sharp. They need very little processing in Lightroom. Thankfully, LR5 can fix any distortion you run into so that is not a problem as long as you shoot raw.

The 18-105 focal length is perfect for a walk around lens. I wish it had a closer focusing distance but with 24 megapixels I can always crop a little and still get a file big enough for large prints.

I will continue to test it and update my review as I use the lens more. I just wanted to jump in here so Nex7 users don't get scared away by all the negative reviews of people trying to use this on their video cameras. I hope they get a firmware update to fix their problem.

I will rarely have to remove this from my Nex7. The only time I see myself taking it off the Nex7 is when I want to shoot macro.

Thank you Sony for making a very useful lens that is reasonably priced. It was worth the wait. I am very happy with my purchase.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

If I only had my NEX-EA50, this lens would get 5 stars. But, like many others, I was hoping to use this lens with my NEX-FS700 as well. This lens DOES NOT WORK with the FS100 or FS700! This lens requires in-camera software correction to correct extreme pin-cushioning in the optics. Check the Sony website for the lens to find out if your camera will work with it. The EA50 has the correction and looks fine. The auto focus and face detection is fast and accurate. The servo zoom is MUCH faster than the 18-200mm kit lens for the EA50. Constant f/4 is great. All-in-all, a great value lens to help my EA50 become my go-to run-and-gun camera. Unfortunately, I can't swap it to my FS700.

Comments about Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens:

I am updating this review, having read reviews from others. This lens does have very noticeable pincushion distortion at mid and long focal lengths. However, this is instantly and fully corrected in Lightroom 5 by scrolling (in Develop mode) to Lens Corrections and clicking on Enable Profile Corrections. Impressive that immediately with December 15, 2013 release of this new lens, Lr5 recognized it and had software for corrections. That's why Lr has this feature. So BEWARE and use your SOFTWARE.Electronic corrections have provided lens designers more freedom with zoom lenses.Zoom lenses are prone to distortion. New "wonder" compact zoom lens designs are meant to be used with electronic corrections. This lens has internal zooming to keep length and balance point close to camera (important on the slim Nex, and internal zooming should keep dust from getting pumped into lens). Those who shoot jpg get in-camera corrections. We who shoot RAW must apply corrections in our computers. Results are excellent. The beauty of this lens is it's slick function in the field. Remember the Hubble telescope? Shortly after placement in orbit, crippling distortion from faulty assembly was apparent. Electronic corrections even solved that. There is nothing wrong with using electronic corrections. Everything we do in Lr or similar programs is electronic correction.
