I followed their instructions to the letter and had it taking pictures to my Samsung III within minutes. Being 75 I have had my share of problems with other stuff. Works perfectly with my iPad Air also. I am amazed at the distance from the camera to my phone that it works so well. High school basketball pictures with the little camera on a Gorilla tripod mounted to a railing 20 feet from me works perfect.

Small camera is easy to take with you. Pictures are typical for compact cameras, lots of pixels, lousy low-light performance. 10 X optical zoom is great to have tied to your phone. Remote use (in hand above crowd) is fun to use.But I expect much better user experience from Sony. Shutter button to exposure time is acceptable with slight lag. Exposure to screen is ~ 2 seconds in 2 Meg mode, and 5-6 sec for full resolution. If you use the button on the camera as opposed to the one on the screen, you can take a picture (but only one) during the readout. If you use the on-screen shutter button you have to wait. Not for small children or sports, but works well for landscapes and sleeping cats ;)Another massive frustration is the WiFi connection (iPhone 5). Of course you have your phone set up to connect to your home network. So to use the camera, you clamp on phone, turn on, open phone, enter security key, enter setup, go to WiFi, select camera, exit setup, scroll to PlayMemories, start app wait about 4 seconds for app to start and discover camera. Now you can shoot. Camera battery lifetime is short, so you will not want to just leave it on, meaning the WiFi will revert to home. Oh, another picture? start at the beginning with setup etc all over.Camera has none of the camera control modes of a $120 class compact point and shoot (with built in WiFi, a flash, and considerably more capability). You will miss the flash, and panaroama modes (use the phone!). No annotation. No geo tagging even with the phone's GPS. One gets the sense the product was rushed out the door with little software effort or thought about integration with the phone. For the cost of the novelty you can buy a *very* capable compact point and shoot or a low-end mirrorless. The QX is a horrible attempt at new with unfinished minimal software, slow speeds and minimal photographic capability, for twice the cost of comparable gph, wifi pocket cameras. Don't bother, or at least remember to keep the box and all packing material: you will need it for the return.

Comments about DSC-QX10 Digital Camera Module for Smartphones (Black):

Great for Macro, discreet hand-held street shots, and for interesting viewpoints using a simple Justin clamp that I clip onto my monopod or lightstand gets me either a "wormseye or a 10 foot tall giant's view" of my subject. When clipped onto my cellphone it's a great conversation starter and ice-breaker. Image quality great for sharing. Great zoom.

Comments about DSC-QX10 Digital Camera Module for Smartphones (Black):

What's good about it is that it improves smartphone image quality significantly, it's small and pleasant to use. Exposure can be very easily adjusted, it's got a good optical zoom, it's basically a significant optical improvement on the iPhone camera.

What's bad about it is that it is slow. It works over a little local network wifi connection to the smartphone and you operate the camera via an app. This is all very ingenious but it also slows things down significantly, in a number of ways. Images are slow to capture, if you're already on a wifi connection you'll have to adjust that before taking a picture, the app is relatively slow to boot up.

Comments about DSC-QX10 Digital Camera Module for Smartphones (White):

I bought this because it's such a unique camera and it takes phenomenal video and really good pictures. The problem with the unique form factor is that it's hard to know that your photos are properly framed, and it takes so long to pair with a phone that you might miss some important moments. Grab this only if you want to have fun and are patient.

      Should Have Returned It

Comments about DSC-QX10 Digital Camera Module for Smartphones (White):

The previous review is not understating the communication hassle between the camera and one's smartphone. It is frustrating enough to cause one not to use the camera. One wonders why they didn't design this with Bluetooth instead of a mini WiFI net that takes 30-45 seconds to establish then is lost if the camera goes into power save sleep.

Also, being in my 70's, the fingers aren't as nimble as they were at one time, thus I find the spring loaded clipping affair difficult to get on to the camera. The operation is easy; it's the keeping the tabs spread out while sliding onto the phone that is hard. The photo results are on par with the several small point & shoots that I have owned. In other words, they are very average.

Comments about DSC-QX10 Digital Camera Module for Smartphones (Black):

The idea of providing some functionality to smart phones is appealing. However the communications between the lens and the phone is just ludicrous and makes the device useless, in most real life cases. It is a pity Sony, makers of really amazing artifacts, coming to this shortcoming.

It works as advertised. Easy to install and easy to take pictures. More settings would be appreciated. The only complaint is the internal wi-fi that allows you to see what the camera is seeing on the phone seems a bit slow. I'm hoping to see improvement when I upgrade from the 4S to 5S Iphone. No flash feature is a problem for night time indoor shooting.

I bought this camera as alternative to carrying my DSLR all the time. Great for those moments when I wished I had my camera. Basically does what it claims to do, the app is a bit glitchy but am sure that will get sorted. Overall, it's a fun little camera, easy to carry, easily attaches to my iPhone or mini gorilla tripod.
