Light weight vs. rigidity are horns of the tripod manufacturers' dilemma. Fortunately, monopods don't need to isolate, aim or cantilever, they only need to mount and ground a camera, so they can veer sharply toward the flimsy horn. Consequently, remarkably flyweight monopods vie for attention. As with tripods, Manfrotto aims above baseline and makes a perfectly serviceable version superior to run-of-the-mill foil-and-friction. It's a little heavier and more expensive than some, but serious kit.

Ignore complaints about the lowest leg being flexible. It's a monopod! Whatever vibration is transmitted up the shaft is negligible in light of the fact you're holding the camera (or whatever) with your hands. All the monopod has to do is securely brace against the ground without collapsing, which this does admirably.

Strongly oval sections slide open and closed instantly, lock securely at a touch, and (because there are 5) close to only 40 cm. Camera mounting screw is well-protected but easily accesssible under a clever cap atop a comfortable, durable, dense foam grip. In aluminum, this one's hard to beat.

I need a light weight monopod for use with a small Bogen ball head & a Lumix FZ1000 in low light conditions. My much older Manfrotto 3249 — used for years with film & digital SLRs — is now overkill.

pluses...
-compact length
-light weight
-extends/collapses operates reasonably smooth
-clamps operate smoothly
-for now, no creep when extended
-inexpensive (a bargain for what it is)

negatives...
-flip out/in levers; not flip up/down. (up/down is better with ball head.)
-no apparent method of adjusting clamping tension
-bottom section is very small diameter, looks barely adequate. (upper sections ok)

Comments about Manfrotto MMC3-01M Compact Monopod (Black):

I bought this to help steady my DSLR when I'm shooting videos. The key word is HELP. It won't take the place of a true stablizer but it sure makes it easier to go portable. A pan and tilt head would probably be of added value but, as yet, I haven't gone that route. Of course, this monopod is pretty good for its basic intended purpose, too.

I bought this thing for holding a speed light and umbrella. It does this just fine and seems to hold them pretty well. However, it is a bit flimsy.

Comments about Manfrotto MMC3-01M Compact Monopod (Black):

Five stars considering the price I paid. It does what it was designed to do. But don't expect too much - it is a lightweight, compact design after all. If you are expecting a rock solid walking stick, you are just expecting too much.

It's reasonably sturdy up to the last section and then it becomes concerning. If you only extend that section half way it is much better.

This is my first monopod, and although it is a fine monopod for what it was designed for, I've discovered that for video, a monopod may not be what I need. I used it to shoot a sporting event and I wish I had just taken my tripod.

I think it will work better for me shooting stills but have yet to try it out.

For me, this purchase was an experiment that isn't working out.

But, since I got it on sale and it's super lightweight, I intend to keep playing with it for awhile to see if and where it fits into my workflow. It might make a passable ad hoc steady stick.

I've used this with an Fuji X-E1 (seems about perfect for a body of that size) and got tack-sharp stills from a 35mm at 1/8". For me, that's equal to about three stops of stabilization.

It's tiny & solid and it's got flip locks, which I prefer.

Look there are lots of good products out there but to date between my better half and I we now own five Manfrotto Mono and Tri-pods. They just perform and are a value. This latest light/compact Monopod is just off the hook and perfect for travel needs. I've become dependent on stability for achieving better photographs and a monopod offers me this in spades when a tripod will be too much bulk or weight like on hikes! Get one soon and you'll just love the extra stability and even a extra level of security !

I was rather surprised at how thin the legs were. This is not for the professional. I was expecting something a little more sturdy. Maybe it was my fault for not examining it closer. This is for a smaller camera and I don't mean GoPro.

Comments about Manfrotto MMC3-01M Compact Monopod (Black):

I'm using it with my camcorder as a stabiliser.

                  What I like:
The built was sturdy, even when fully extended.
The rubber handle is not the squishy type.

                  Some gripes:
The rubber cap (that covers the tripod screw) doesn't snap on, I have to push it in.
The thing is not a circulr tube, more like slightly squished. So when mounting anything, your camera might not align with your grip.

Buy it. It's $[$].Shot all day with my Nikon D7000 w/vertical grip and an old school 80-200mm beast on a little china ballhead, it all weighs in at about 5.5 pounds. Then add the pressure from naturally pushing down from regular shooting. Zero problems. I honestly expected this to slowly collapse when applying pressure, nope. No flex either. I am thoroughly and pleasantly surprised with this little gem. Just buy it already.

I am using this as a boom with my shotgun mic. It isn't terribly long, but it is long enough for my work. Construction is solid until the last two sections, it gets a bit flimsy which is expected because it does get pretty thin towards the end. It works for my shoots and is a good price to boot.

I notice when I was editing video is that there is very small shakiness in the videos since the stick foot is very small. It's on $![$]so nothing to complain about.

Comments about Manfrotto MMC3-01M Compact Monopod (Black):

Comments about Manfrotto MMC3-01M Compact Monopod (Black):

I need a light weight monopod for use with a small Bogen ball head & a Lumix FZ1000 in low light conditions. My much older Manfrotto 3249 — used for years with film & digital SLRs — is now overkill.

                              pluses...
                              -compact length
                              -light weight
                              -extends/collapses operates reasonably smooth
                              -clamps operate smoothly
-for now, no creep when extended
-inexpensive (a bargain for what it is)

                              negatives...
-flip out/in levers; not flip up/down. (up/down is better with ball head.)
-no apparent method of adjusting clamping tension
-bottom section is very small diameter, looks barely adequate. (upper sections ok)
