I purchased this device to backup my photos and homemade videos. My college kid in graduate school uses it to access, and backup, his files and papers from any public Wi-Fi access point.
I run Windows 7/8, while my son likes Mac OS. I have it hard wired to my home LAN, and hard wired access is lightning fast. Using my wireless devices to connect to it via my home LAN is not as fast, because speed is limited by your wireless device's wireless card, or by your LAN.
It does faster hard drive backups than my Windows Server 2008 R2, which is configured as a file server. My Cloud has support for Apple's backup protocol, which my son uses for his IPad. He also runs a MacBook connected to MyCloud, which he uses to share files with all of Apple devices.
The remote access works by using a special application to log into a Western Digital secure web site, which is dedicated to communicating with your My Cloud. The web site communicates with your My Cloud, while your device communicates through the web site to your My Cloud. Simple.
The My Cloud remote application uses a drag and drop interface, which looks similar to Windows Explorer, to transfer files between the cloud and your local device's storage memory.
Remote connection peed seems to be limited by more your internet connection and your remote device than by My Cloud. I have connected at home in three ways, with varying speed connections. One, a laptop connected via a network cable is FAST. Two, a laptop or tablet connected via wireless to my local LAN runs about 1/4 to 1/2 the speed of a network cable, depending upon the device.
Three, a laptop, or a tablet, connecting via the internet on my home LAN is as fast as transfering large files to/from most any web site. Upload and download apeed is frequently limited by your internet provider. Naturally, a laptop using a network cable to connect to the home LAN is way faster than one connecting wirelessly, by a factor of 3 in my case.
Oh yeah, before I go, I also use it with my DLNA enabled, wireless blu-ray player to stream home videos onto my TV. NICE.
Hope this helps someone.

I would probably give this product 5 Stars, if it came with real instructions or WD had real product support. I have automated email from them that sounds great "Your Complimentary WD SmartWare Pro Activation Code." However, there is no information on what the code is for or where it goes and "support" will not reply. There are other strange auto things in the setup, but they work. Files ("shares") are easy to reach both by WiFi and internet. However, there is no indication of security - who can look at your files. My Cloud is setup to connect to Drop Box, but with the limited information, it might be wise to use Drop Box as an independent (semi-)public cloud and tell no one you have a WD MyCloud, Or at least do not give them access information. One very strange thing is the USB port. You can use it to transfer files - don't -- things must go to your computer and back, it is half as fast as a USB 2 on your computer. Otherwise, speed is a function of your ip, LAN or WiFi. I would NOT recommend this to anyone with limited computer-intuition.

Nicely integrated network storage solution

By DougB

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:

I purchased the 4TB My Cloud Personal to replace an 8+ year old network drive on my iMac. I was pleasantly surprised with the functionality that is provide by the My Cloud solution. The drive is configured to have a User folder, Public folder, as well a TimeMachine backups on an iMac. The folders can be accessed from your local network as well as externally over the internet once you register the device. I am using the User space to automatically backup my Documents, Music, and Movies folders from my Mac. Multiple Users are also supported. Note that this is a backup of the most recent files, not a historical backup as is done with TimeMachine. A neat feature was that once I configured my iPhone with the "My Cloud" app that I was able to create a backup of my photos within my user space. This is then very convenient for directly bringing these photos into other applications on my Mac such as Lightroom or Photoshop.

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:

Have connected this to my Archer C9 TP link router for NAS. My first NAS. Main purpose was time machine backups and storage for my raw photos from the SLR. Was a breeze to setup. Time machine works flawlessly. WD sync also running in the background.
The only thing I have not tried is backing up which may be needed in the future.

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:

After fooling around with Microsoft Home Server 2011 and Server 2012, I decided to simplify things and go with this NAS box. It is easy to setup and configure. Like others have said, it may be best to set the IP address to static so that you can always find it on your network. Remote connection is easy and I was quite surprised at the download speed when away from the house. One of the best features is to use it as a movie server and watch any video I have stored on any computer / XBOX / Playstation / Roku I have in the house connected to my home network.

I have had this drive for 3 months and have spent 3+ hours with support. If I try to use the drive as a normal drive with folders from my windows computer, I'm prompted for a username and password. None of the usernames and passwords that are setup through the dashboard register. WD blames microsoft and states that I should call MSFT. The solution. Delete users and re-add. It works, then fails the next day. Expensive product which I hoped would work much better. I upgraded my dropbox account instead, but still use this product to do phone and video backup.

The unit does exactly what I want and the price was very reasonable. Setting it up is not as easy as one would think. They gave me too many options. I wish it just said what do you want to do? I choose my goal and then it give straight step by step instructions on how to do that. They do say they are available to call for help and I will do that, but my experience with those help lines is that they take for ever.

Otherwise, I am very happy and I know I will figure it out.

First off, I tried 4 Macs to timemachine to this device, then 3 PCs, and some tablets and phones. Turns out, nothing is recoverable!?! It's there but not recoverable. Then I download the WD software on the Macs then I get all these notifications about files that can't be backedup. Anything with ':< |>\?*"/' is invalid. Waist of money

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:

When my laptop hard drive filled up with pictures, I decided to take the plunge and get a network storage device. The WD MyCloud promised easy, trouble-free setup, and the price was right. I'm not interested in cloud access, I just wanted a drive to show up in Windows Explorer where I could put stuff. Unfortunately, I couldn't set up this device to work that way.

The device requires the use of the WD software and I had a hard time setting it up with Windows. The software would not recognize the device initially, requiring a 45 minute call with tech support. Accessing the device from my laptop constantly requested a username and password before connecting. Files can only be added to "Shares" created through the software and Windows wouldn't map to the new Shares.

All in all, this is not the device for me. Hopefully others have better luck. I really just wanted something that would act like an external hard drive, except on my network; the WD MyCloud is not that device.

Good quality & works as advertised. I found setup easy, quick and intuitive. My only complaint would be that I can only be logged in from one computer at a time when accessing non-public file folders and that is a bit of a hassle sometimes.

Easy to install and now I am able to access the files from anywhere. Also can access the files using my phone. No need to connect and disconnect, like I used to with my old external hard drive.
Been using this for less than a month.

The initial set up was straight forward. The links to the support site were inconsistent, making advanced settings, such as remote access from a mobile device a bit of a treasure hunt. Have all devices on my personal LAM connected, simplifying my work day.

WD products are great. Have a 2 Tb version of the cloud and have had no problems. This is an excellent price for the 4TB version.

Comments about WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud NAS Storage:
