I've been shooting for business and fun for more than 50 years. I've acquired a lot of landmark cameras over the years: A Nikon F with the 105mm f2.5, a Leica M4P with 50mm f2 Summicron; both a Canon F1 and the T90; a Nikon D7000; a Sony NEX-6. The A7 belongs up there with each of those hallmark machines. It is easily the best DSLR I've ever used. Yes, I know it's mirrorless - an EVF instead of an optical finder. But in every way, for DSLR users, this is the camera with which you can safely jump into mirrorless.First of all, the finder/menu system. Every important control is literally under your thumb. It combined the best qualities of an optical finder and a ground glass screen. In the 2 seconds (adjustable) persistence of each shot, the super-high res EVF CONFIRMS you got what you expected. Punch a small button next to the viewfinder and you can zoom in during that persistence period and confirm you got what you want - without wasting time "chimping" as you would with a DSLR.One of great annoyances of doing video with a DSLR like a 5DIII is that the viewfinder isn't live view. You need a Hoodman or other device to turn your LCD into a crude EVF. Doing video with the A7 is a dream - because the live view IS in the finder - and it's high resolution.Next, lenses. I've still got 3 Leica M mounts from my M4P days, and lots of Canon FD lenses orphaned when Canon went EOS. Even if you have not manually focused in decades you would not believe how easy and quick it is with the A7. It has a feature called "focus peaking" that is to manual focusing what a BMW automatic transmission does to replacing a 6-speed gear shift. It shows you PRECISELY when you hit focus, in less than 2 seconds. Amazing! And there are inexpensive adapters for just about everything but the bottom of a Coke bottle. And for adjusting exposure - there's a histogram you can put right in the viewfinder window - try THAT with a D610 or a 5DIII! In short - if you ever considered going full frame, you'd do yourself a great disservice NOT to try the A7 rather than any DSLR.Much maligned are kit lenses. Many may be inferior to expensive specials, but the 28-70 is a great exception. Many buyers were misled to NOT buy the full A7-kit lens package. Dumb. When the $[$]24-70mm so-called "Zeiss" came out, many copies were quite inferior to the kit lens available as a $300 option. On the Sony DPR forum, time after time, pixel-peepers had great difficulty telling which shots were made with the kit, and which with the 24-70. The kit lens is that good! For video, the best thing for mr is the audio input and monitoring system. It is first class. Whether you use a Rode shotgun, a lavaliere, or a mixer in, the A7 is pro grade. Full Zebra if you want it to balance/check lighting before you start shooting. What's NOT to like? There is only a single SD slot. I am accustomed to two.Battery life is not great - say 300-400 shots/battery - and you want to buy both spare batteries and an optional chargerThe Sony lens selection is limited, and no third party (e.g. Sigma, Tamron, Tokina) have made AF or AF/stabilized lenses for it. Sony lenses like the 55mm and 35mm primes are very overpriced. On the other hand, you can pick up an excellent old Canon, Minolta or Nikon 50mm f1.4-f2 lens for under $100, an adapter for about $20 - and with the A7's brilliant manual focusing system, you can save $300-500 and get all popular focal lengths cheaply.Want great wide angle? B&H sells a brilliant Samyang 14mm f2.8 for about $400 that will blow the doors off anything offered for 2-3x by Nikon or Canon. A 70-200 f4 lens for under $[$]will be here shortly, and the 16-35 I am waiting for should follow. Thus, with the kit lens, you'll be set. There's one caveat: Technology is moving fast today. For the next 5 years, as cameras become basically small computers, the technology is going to make any camera less than bleeding edge in 18 months. Unlike my Leica M4P or Nikon F, these cameras will not be heirlooms. I look back at images made 10 years ago with my Nikon D70, and they are lovely. But the camera is obsolescent. 10 years from now, your A7 will similarly be obsolescent, but will still make great images, if you care for it. Don't expect to get 300,000 exposures with any prosumer camera today (although you might get that and more!) because in the age of computerized cameras, they're all designed to be made obsolescent (NOT obsolete - unusable) in 2-3 years. So go click the button and put an A7 and 28-70 kit lens in your cart (I added the accidental damage extended warranty because poop happens) - and get ready to enjoy this great camera!

This camera makes beautiful images...the kit lens is not stellar and is slow to focus . In my opinion this camera was rushed into production...but if you shoot portraits or landscapes and can be slow and methodical in your image making this may work for you...if you are a street or sport shooter or just want something to take pictures of your kids/grandkids this probably will not work for you .
Until they come out with better lenses and I actually see them and they fix the slow focus issue . This camera is still in development mode as far as I am concerned...maybe in a couple years it will be where it should be right now . Save yourself some heartache...the Fuji X-E2 and the Olympus E-M1 are better choices for me.What good is a camera if you cannot get the images...the Olympus and Fuji are quick enough to capture the moment.

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

Just returned from using it in China rather than take my heavier professional cameras. Did a good job but it seems a little slow in processing a just taken picture. When taking a picture in both raw and JPEG the battery life is very short so it is best to buy a spare battery or two. Image quality are very good but it has a delay in when using the zoom.

I'll probably use this most often with a different lens, my bad. I've owned other Alpha cameras and really like having the full sized sensor. Need to do some manual focus work and this has a bar that comes up to tell you where you are focused, a great help in the darkenss.

    I didn't like it.

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

I ended returning this camera and buying Hasselblad HV which is superb incarnation of A99 camera. Apparently many people like A7, but I was hugely disappointed by its toy like build quality. It feels cheap and its kit lens feels even cheaper. I like well built cameras. Photography is not only about image it's also about a process, your satisfaction of holding that camera, having feeling about lens, controls etc. A7 didn't provide me with that. Today there's zillion of cameras with great image quality. 24M is way too much for most scenes anyways, so quality of camera, its controls, is very important to me.

This is my first full frame camera and I am very impressed. The image quality is wonderful. Low-light performance is good, and the video AF is great. It beats the AF in my Sony EX1-R.

Absolutely worth the money. I know there are better cameras out there, but there is nothing that comes even remotely close at this price point.

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

I'm a serious amateur and decide3d to move on from a digital SLR. My main reason is I wanted a good quality camera that was smaller and lighter than my old gear and without breaking the bank. I found it in the A7. So far I'm very impressed with the image quality and low light sensitivity. Not so impressed with the battery life but that's easy to overcome.

Serious amateur. I bought the camera because I'm pleased with my a6000 and wanted a full frame to use my Leica and old Nikon lenses. It lacks stabilization but heck I spent 45 years hand holding cameras in low light situations. Now that I'm using fast manual lenses, lack of stabilization really not much of an issue. Bottom line is the camera seems to being sold out so if you are on the fence, grab one. I'm having lots of fun and getting superior images.

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

I started off with a Canon, then a Nikon, and now my Sony A7!

I was nervous about switching out of my comfort zone and researched the camera a million times before purchasing to make sure it was the right camera for me, and it was!

I was nervous about getting a camera with no built-in flash but the salesman who sold me the camera at B&H (if I remember correctly, his name was Christopher) quickly showed me how the camera could be used in low-light situations without the use of a flash. (I still purchased an external flash - Sony HVL-F32M External Flash - just in case, but haven't even needed to use it much yet!)

I highly recommend this camera to all photographers - from beginners to professionals. Besides from it being amazing and beyond clear *and mirrorless and full frame* , it is very simple to use and very light and easy to travel with.

The ONLY downside is that the battery life is not the best, but it's okay because you just get an extra battery and your good to go!

I use this camera for landscape photos and portraits.

The camera is very intuitive and easy to use. I am coming from a Nikon 3100 and have found an easy transition.

So far the photo quality is amazing and I am very pleased.

Make sure to get a large memory card as you will need it with this camera photos/file size. I recommend at least a 64gb.

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

The A7 is a beautiful camera inside and out. A very inexpensive full-frame camera when compared to introductory level Nikon or Canon full frames.

            Some Pros:
            - Take amazing low-light photos even with kit lens
            - Electronic viewfinder automatically detect eye
            - Light and portable
            - Tilt screen

            Some Cons
            - No image stabilization
            - Lacking wide array of lenses
            - No built in flash

The sheer performance of the outweighs the lack of some features. I highly recommend this camera and if purchased, B&H typically has the best pricing with additional goodies.

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

This camera is a fantastic, really good image rendering, great high ISO performance. The thing I particularly like about the Sony a7 is the focus peaking feature. It helps me put on my collection of vintage manual lenses, in other words, using those on this camera was super easy. I ditched my trusted Canon 7D because of this feature.
One thing could be improved is battery life. I turned on Airplane mode right after taking it out of the box, but still got less than OK battery life. I don't know why Sony make such a bad thing for the a flag ship product. But so far I'm doing fine with another spare battery, so that shouldn't be a big problem if you have one or two more to go with it.
Overall, it is a great full frame camera for the price.

I can't believe that Sony has such a complete full frame in such a small package. I returned this though because the A7 II just came out wih image stabilization in body. Can't wait!

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

I read the reviews, compared competitive camera images that just couldn't match it, and found that the camera lived up to what was promised 100%. Excellent full frame mirrorless lightweight that does more than the big SLR's at 3 times the cost. It, and the others in this Sony series, are a break through. I needed a powerful camera to take accurate and high resolution images of my art, and this is one of the best out there I've seen.

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

I returned a Canon 6D and purchased the Sony A7. The Canon was just too heavy for me to be able to shoot as much as I enjoy. I love the availability of adapters and legacy lenses. The peaking feature nicely assists manual focus. The camera is 5 star, the Sony documentation not so much. The PDF/Kindle version of a book on the A7 that I found online during my camera research was my best investment. As mentioned in other reviews, buy extra batteries.

I like the camera looks, feels good. All the bottoms may take a while to get to know. Still need time to compare the picture with my Canon 5d mark iii.

It is a very good camera. Make raw + jpg photos and videos with avchd and mp4. The iso is high, but no so good (make strong noise).
