Before I begin I would like to offer Sony kudos for launching what is most likely to become the next major advancement in mirror less full frame cameras.
Before purchasing the Sony A7 with the FE 28-70 kit lens, I read every review and comment on this camera and lens combo I could find. There was much good to say about the A7/r. And not much good to say about the 28-70 kit lens. With some of the shortcoming of both the camera and the lens I felt the camera was not ready for primetime. With the price tag as it was I was going to wait until the A7 MkII (?) was available. Currently I'm shooting with a Canon 5D MK III and L glass. I'm going on an Alaskan cruise and will also spend a week in Seattle and was looking for a lighter load (with tripod.)
Then I saw that B&H had a webcast coming up highlighting the A7/r and I registered for it. Turns out they had a webinar special which I took advantage of and bought the camera and lens.
I've had the camera for a couple of weeks and have shot around 350 raw and raw + jpegs. Keep in mind that I'm reviewing this as a photographer, not a tester.I concur with most of the other reviewers with respect to the kit lens, regarding barrel distortion, chromatic aberration and some loss of sharpness with the kit lens. I shoot mostly in RAW and most of the above mentioned issues can be corrected in Lightroom / Photoshop. I've already made some presets that eliminate much of the work in getting rid of CA, Distortion etc. I do spend a little extra time sharpening my RAW files than usual. I would have bought the 24-70 but for the most part the reviews on that lens were not that much better than the 28-70.
As far as the camera goes, not having a better auto exposure bracketing system is a major shortcoming. The battery life is horrible (I bought 3 extra), I know the kit lens is plastic but the least they could have done is put a metal filter thread on it. Not including an external battery charger for the camera is an embarrassment. I've been trying to find a remote shutter release for the camera and have not been able to do so. I did find an obsolete compatible battery charger on the clearance rack at a local retailer. With the negatives that I mentioned I still believe I made the right choice and look forward to learning and using this camera. Perhaps a future update will correct some of the issues I mentioned. Oh yes. I did order an inexpensive Fotodiox Lens adapter to try with some of my old Minolta Rokkor X lens. I will not get an adapter for my L glass as that would defeat the purpose of the small footprint of the Sony system.

This camera makes beautiful images...the kit lens is not stellar and is slow to focus . In my opinion this camera was rushed into production...but if you shoot portraits or landscapes and can be slow and methodical in your image making this may work for you...if you are a street or sport shooter or just want something to take pictures of your kids/grandkids this probably will not work for you .
Until they come out with better lenses and I actually see them and they fix the slow focus issue . This camera is still in development mode as far as I am concerned...maybe in a couple years it will be where it should be right now . Save yourself some heartache...the Fuji X-E2 and the Olympus E-M1 are better choices for me.What good is a camera if you cannot get the images...the Olympus and Fuji are quick enough to capture the moment.

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

I read the reviews, compared competitive camera images that just couldn't match it, and found that the camera lived up to what was promised 100%. Excellent full frame mirrorless lightweight that does more than the big SLR's at 3 times the cost. It, and the others in this Sony series, are a break through. I needed a powerful camera to take accurate and high resolution images of my art, and this is one of the best out there I've seen.

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

I returned a Canon 6D and purchased the Sony A7. The Canon was just too heavy for me to be able to shoot as much as I enjoy. I love the availability of adapters and legacy lenses. The peaking feature nicely assists manual focus. The camera is 5 star, the Sony documentation not so much. The PDF/Kindle version of a book on the A7 that I found online during my camera research was my best investment. As mentioned in other reviews, buy extra batteries.

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

I've never owned a really great camera, until now. I'm a novice, just starting out and I am amazed by the size of the camera (very compact and light) as well the quality of the photos this camera produces. I played around with the a7 and a7r with the 24-70 mm lens by Sony. I had a very hard time deciding between the two cameras (the a7r with the lens was nearly twice the price). I think I made a great decision with the Alpha a7. I would definitely recommend this camera. If you look through B&H's web site, there is a really great comparison of the a7, a7r, and a7s. I warn you though, you want all 3 of them.

I am a serious Wedding photographer shooting myself 50 Weddings per year and as a studio about 100, After two consecutive fri sat sun weekends and a lot of ADVIL i happened to see my doctor for a checkup. I mentioned the pain and my wife was in a bad car accident and she is still having difficulty holding a camera period! The Sony outperformed the D4 I was shocked! It's light and super fast. The menu took some tweaking but got it down pretty darn good! Shot my first Wedding with it this past weekend and it was like a dream come true! No Pain!!! Most ergonomically sound setup ever! Also didn't take long to adjust to it at all! The kit lend is garbage and flash would be better if the hot shoe was metal. No other complaints just wow! My work never looked so good!

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

Beautiful Camera, well built with a superior sensor.
In combination with the right lense (not the kit lens) it is a complete DSLR replacement.
I use this camera with the Zeiss FE 55 F/1.8 and the images are brilliant.
Battery life is quiet disappointing, so I had to buy the Battery Grip and a second battery.
I am missing a button to qickly turn the display on or off. You can do this only in the internal menu, which is very inconvenient.
Regarding the kit lens FE 28-70mm. It is a cheap light weight and better than no lens. But I would not buy it again. There is too big gap in terms of picture quality between the 28-70mm and a prime lens like the Zeiss FE 55mm.

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

a full frame light camera. Being schooled as a film photographer for 45 years - I have carried the heaviest of cameras. Put up with it - when digital came out - same problem if you wanted a full frame camera you have to lug them. Bought one - sold it. When this camera came out I could not believe it. It performs just as well as all the other digital DSLR's out there and it is LIGHT. Not only that with the proper adapter I can put on any of my glass I have in my bag that I have paid thousands on. But you need to manually focus.
So what - I've manually focused for so many years that doesn't scare me off with - that's no big deal and in fact I prefer it.
Very happy with all the functions of this camera, EXCEPT the manual sucks and the panorama mode is very constrictive. As I can only make the panorama that Sony wants me to, as I can't do partial ones.
RAW is fine and PS CC camera raw 8.3 works well with it as does Lightroom 5.

I have only had this model for one month and have not been able to test it completely. However, it meets my number one issue - reducing the weight on the neck and shoulders while carrying a camera with interchangeable lenses. Some of the features I truly enjoy are:
      -Image Quality
      -Viewfinder
      -Adjustable monitor angle
-Built-in camera leveling thru the viewfinder

On the negative side, the kit lens – it is not of the quality nor as versatile as the 24-105 that I used with the 5DII. A wider selection of lenses with native Sony "FE" attachment would be great!

The jury is still out. I have an NEX-6 now and, frankly, can't see much difference in the results although I haven't given it any kind of scientific tests. I like the A7 viewfinder and the controls better and believe it does better in low light conditions, but question whether it's worth the considerable extra cost.

This camera is fairly easy to use. I was a bit of disappointed for not having a built-in flash. However, I was very impressed with the result of shooting at a fairly low light condition without a flash. DP Review did not give good reviews for pictures shot in JPEG format. For a non-professional photographer, I think this is a remarkable camera at a reasonable price.

Only have had this camera for about two weeks. Have used it for indoor photography of family mainly. Great imagery, and it feels great in my hands. The kit lens is adequate, but I may graduate to the Sony FE55, either via purchase, or maybe a trial rental. Will be taking it overseas shortly for travelling, and am sure that it will serve me well. Got this in lieu of my Canon 6D due mainly to form factor. The Canon was too large and heavy to carry all day, esp with all the other items one needs for travelling these days (ipad, spare glasses, etc.,etc.)In short: very satisfied with this purchase

Being just an amateur photographer, I hesitated on spending such an amount of money on a camera, but I wanted an upgrade and I was pretty sure this one was exactly what I needed.
No more doubts since I buyed it: it's absolutely perfect.
Intuitive, easy to use, comfortable, lightweight, fast and great quality in any light situation.
The only con I see is the battery life.
I'm just waiting to have the money to get a better lens, but this one was a good deal so far.

Comments about Sony Alpha a7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens:

As a photo hobbyist and enthusiast, I have  always wanted a capable full-frame camera in a more portable and smaller form factor. At its pricepoint, the A7 and A7R has no peers. From its aesthetically pleasing body, fantastic EVF, and great customizability among other things, the A7 is a beast to behold. Thank you to B&H for the great customer service during the promotional offer in allowing me to have my dream camera! :-)
