I have owned 2 copies of the Canon 24-105L in the past and both were fine and I accepted their flaws and limitations. I read the various reviews online when this was launched and most called the difference between the Sigma and Canon negligible. I however found them much more pronounced. The Sigma is far sharper in the center and a bit sharper on the edges. The AF is faster than any Sigma zoom I've used and is faster than the other Canon 24-105's. Not like a 135 f/2 AF, don't get me wrong. The vignetting is similar and the CA is better on the Sigma. On the wide end (24) the Sigmas has less distortion than the Canon version. It is heavier but on a 5D3 it is a similar fit to the new larger glass 24-70's that have been coming out recently. The Art Line is beautiful and well designed and after owning both this lens and the Sigma 35 1.4 I look forward to more full frame Sigma lenses that rival or beat their Canon counterparts for a great deal less money.

I received this lens from B&H yesterday and have been putting it through its paces. The build quality is solid, the autofocus is smooth, but tends to hunt more than the Canon 24-105 F4L it replaced. Image quality is sharp in the center, but softens considerably as you move away from center. I can't say that it is better than my Canon 24-105, yet. Color representation, chromatic aberration and lens flare are non existent with the Sigma 24-104 (that was a problem with the Canon version). The background is nicely blurred (bokeh). It isn't apples to apples, but compared to my Canon 24-70 F4L is not even close. My 24-70 F4L is razor sharp throughout the frame, with excellent image quality. I'm shooting on my Canon 5D Mark III.

Sharper than my "L" Series

Comments about Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Canon EF:

Hi: went back-and-forth for a year contemplating this lens, after renting it and testing it vs. my 24-105 Canon "L" lens.
Pros: Sharper than the Canon, balances nicely on the 5D Mark III, less "play" in lens barrel when extended, autofocus is fast and precise, build quality good for the money.
Cons: Heavier than the Canon "L", not weather sealed, filters are expensive (82mm), slightly narrow manual focusing ring

Comments about Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Canon EF:

The build quality of the 24-105mm is outstanding. I primarily use this lens for scenic and landscape photography. Although the lens is heavy, much of the time it is mounted on a tripod. Colors are rich and images crisp at the edges. So far I've found the autofocus on this lens is amazing as well as silent, fast and accurate - extremely important if trying to capture wildlife in the scene.

This lens has basically become my main lens for my 7DMII. On an APS-C sensor it gives me an incredible range with most shooting situations. I am finding it very sharp with nice background blur at f4. This is my 3rd Art lens from Sigma and I love them all. You really can't go wrong with this lens

      Great but with flaws

      By Graham

Comments about Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Canon EF:

I bought this lens for a good all round lens. I'm happy with it overall. It feels solid and its pretty sharp for my 70D. Its much sharper than Canons version and doesn't get darker when you zoom in like Canons which i am happy about... However in low light (indoors), it takes too long to focus, atleast for sports. There is one Major flaw. When i go to change the lens to the sigma 24-105 while the camera is on. The Af doesn't work and it forces me to turn the camera off, take off the lens and then put the lens on and turn my camera back on again which has lead to me missing some valuable shots. I don't have this problem with any other Canon lens i own. However, if i remember to turn the camera off before i switch lenses then it's good to go. I am overall happy with this lens and would %100 choose it over Canons.

Comments about Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Canon EF:

Putting the lens through its paces, I found it to be quite a joy to use! A solid, good-looking piece of equipment, I initially planned on returning it after a series of photos showed blurry corners and unacceptable levels of chromatic aberration. Noting I had attached a low cost CP filter (Tiffen brand), I decided to remove the filter and see whether it made any difference. Wow!!!! Picture quality significantly improved. Traveling to NYC, I purchased a better quality (Hoya) CP filter. Excellent picture quality to say the least. The only reason why I knocked off a star was due to some distortion especially at the widest focal point. Otherwise an amazingly good lens! On a side note, the overall weight of the lens was not an issue for me.

Compared to the 15 year old Canon 24-70mm f2.8L (version 1) this thing is junk. I just did a side by side comparison at f5.6, 8, & 11. At every focal length the Sigma is much softer in the corners and has way more CA. Do yourself a favor and get something else.

Build construction is great, but optics aren't there

Canon EF 28-105mm USM IS L does NOT even get closer to this Sigma......Sigma did again...beat Canon shamefully... I am a Canon shooter, but hate Canon laziness to upgrade bad lenses...There another thing: Canon charges for the hood ig lens is not L series... SHAME ON YOU CANON...I have been upgrading all my Canon lenese for Sigma art lenses...I do not regret it. This Sigma 25-105 is wonderfully sharp and the construction is outstanding!!!! You will love it....The cons: heavy (Metal body) and heavy vignette at f/4 (easily corrected at Adobe Lightroom)...I recommend....

Comments about Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Canon EF:

This lens kinda blew my mind. I bought it to replace my Canon 24-70 2.8f and didn't want to pay full canon pop. I was told to check out this lens as an alternative and i will never go back! this lens for video coupled with the Metabone Speedbooster Ultra is just about perfect for run and gun work. I use it with an FS7 and it is truly a great combination.

As for why i did not give it 5 stars, the only knock on the lens is obviously that it isn't 2.8... but that doesn't matter much to me with the speed booster. But the big ring is the zoom and the small one is the focus. Makes sense for photography where most focus work is done in automatic but for video this is kind of backwards. still.. I got used to it and now it isn't a big deal.

          Highly recommend.

            hello all,
from the date of purchase of this lens it never left the 5Ds body
each and every shot since day one was razor sharp, butter smooth bokeh and amazingly vivid colours which even my 24-70 f2.8 canon doesn't provide.
the smoothness of the zoom and focus is one of a kind.
some vegnieting is there at either ends of the focal range , distortion is almost non, no lens extending when falling down which is weird with its size and weight.
i think it has a perfect lens to body weight distribution (yes its heavy but its better for my shaky big arms) and thats pretty much all i can say

Great lens that is very sharp for a zoom. Build quality is excellent. F4 with OS is a fair compromise when considering the size of a F2.8 lens. If I need a faster shutter speed I will simply increase the ISO by a stop. Autofocus works great in good lighting conditions but it tends to hunt in low light.

I took it on vacation to Cabo San Lucas and it should have been the only lense I carried with me as it was the only lense of four I hauled along. Really impressed and can't wait to use it more!

This is my main lens, use it for practically everything. It does weigh quite a bit but I dont think its that heavy. You get used to it and most Sigma lenses are fairly hefty. The Vignetting is alright, fairly noticeable at F/4. The zoom range is great for full frame cameras, colors, sharpness are fantastic. I highly recommend, great lens for pretty much anything except astro-photography or macro shots.

Better than the Canon -- but enough better??

Comments about Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Canon EF:

Preface: I have the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art and the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art. Love them both. Nothing I tried of Canon's was on par. Love that glass. So I though, "Hey, the 24-105 should be WAY better than the Canon!" so I bought this one. And…

Yes. The Sigma is a wee bit sharper. It has a bit less distortion (and what it has Lightroom recognizes and takes out). Yes, the image stabilizer on the Sigma is a wee bit better. Yes. The Sigma is a wee bit tighter (but to be fair, my Canon 24-105 has a LOT of miles on it). The AF seemed comparable in non-scientific test.

But the Sigma is bigger. It's longer collapsed, longer when extended, and overall heavier. Front threads are larger. One thing that I really did not like about the Sigma was the really skinny focus barrel. That thing is about 1/2" wide… and it's *behind* the zoom ring, opposite the way the Canon does it. And after 10 (?) years of using the Canon that way… just a really hard habit to break. If the distortion were closer to zero, I'd have kept it for video work (which does not have LR plugins for lens correction). Not terrible distortion, just not much better than the Canon.

At the end of the day, I didn't feel it was *that* much better than the Canon for me to make it worth the upgrade. Yes. Overall, it's a bit better in a bunch of areas. But for me, not enough better to keep. If I were buying new, however, I'd probably go with the Sigma. That is, new Canon vs. new Sigma. Keep in mind that a lot depends on the copy you get of either.

Great lens from Sigma, but I'll wait for their 85mm prime offering that I hope comes soon.

Comments about Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Canon EF:

My Canon 24-104 f4 broke the week before I had a wedding to shoot on the island of Jamaica leaving from NYC...the zoom got stuck and would only work 24-50mm. I did use my Canon 24-105 a lot but I also used the Canon 24-70 2.8 just as often before I bought the 24-105 and it never broke. The Canon's soon would also slide when my camera was faced towards the ground.

The Canon does focus faster than the Sigma with my 5D3 and it is weather sealed but the Sigma is not.

The Sigma is Sharper, manual focus adjustments are smooth and a pleasure, The zoom does not slip. The image stabilization is better.

The only issue with the sigma for me is that it isn't sealed, slightly slower auto focusing and if you're shooting video and try to pull focus it does zoom a bit.
