Because I primarily use my Canon 1Dx, I wasn't able to try the TTL functionality until recently with this controller. Once the firmware update came out at the end of April, I downloaded it and tried shooting with it in TTL mode with my Canon 5D Mark III. For the most part I was very pleased with the use of it. However, there were quite a few times where it misfired or didn't fire at all, and I couldn't figure out why. I turned it off and back on and adjusted from manual back to TTL. I hope it was just a glitch that day. Overall, despite its steep price tag, it works as expected. One thing I wish it did was display the actual power readout of the flash head on the LCD screen of the controller, instead of just + or - with exposure compensation. Not sure why it was designed that way.

It's a remote. Overpriced.$[*], when you just spent around $4500 for the Profoto B1 500 kit.Cause it's not a kit of wireless triggering equipments. It's a remote. The B1 are already wireless, air strobes. It should be included in the B1 kit. The remote works well. It's useful and i think it's normal to own this remote, if you have one or more B1.

    Works well

Comments about Profoto Air Remote TTL-C for B1 Air (Canon E-TTL):

Pretty much like the canon transmitter for the 600rt
    Works well. Simple to use.

If I had a wish it would be:
    IR for focusing
At least Pocket Wiz channels 1-4 as many of us have way more configurations than b1 or D1's
Use AA batt instead of AAA

Then it would be close to perfect

Comments about Profoto Air Remote TTL-C for B1 Air (Canon E-TTL):

Essential tool for B1's and digital display great to have...BUT as already mentioned here biggest issue is that the power adjustment level on remote does NOT correspond with B1 head. Profoto are you listening....whats the point of having a simple (and expensive) + or - adjustment level on the remote that does not even correspond to the actual power level display on the B1??? STOP pumping this system as revolutionary and start to include essential functionality for photographers... How are we supposed to know and quickly adjust the current power level in manual for each head? This is vital when trying to work alone or quickly with more than 1 head and not keep asking your assistant "What is the power level on the B1"?Makes me believe that you mainly created these things with TTL in mind.I rarely use TTL (unless i'm forced too) and for me the power adjustments in manual also respond tooooo slowwww from the remote (I'm sure you get the point)....and i can make a cup of tea by the time they get there with more than 1 head....Other gripes...more about the B1's limitations as a closed system and compatibility to trigger Sekonic meter but i will moan about that in the B1 reviews...

Easy to use layout and work well. It's hard to give more stars for a few reasons though. It's too expensive and I feel 90% of the cost is to cover their R+D, although isn't ground breaking technology.... I appreciate the competition here (e.g. broncolor) have been slow in the area and feel they have open slather to charge what they like within reason. High Speed Sync when it arrives will help justify the price.

This remote, together with the B1, are my first Profoto products I own. To make the long story short, I'm really close to return them to B&H. I won't talk about the B1 here, I'll review it in its own product link. The remote does what it's supposed to do, and it works as advertised. Now, what I HATE about it: 1.It is such a tight fit in the hotshoe of my camera, I can see pretty soon having to send the body to Canon to replace it. I literally have to wrestle with it to yank it out. Are you kidding me??? I would expect this from a Chinese remote (oh wait, they are made in China), not from a top-of-the-line manufacturer of photo equipment. 2.Even with the remote turned off, the camera's shutter speed doesn't go above 1/200th of a second. I have to remove the remote from the hotshoe in order to use a shutter speed above 1/200. Did I mention how hard it is to remove it from the hotshoe? I wouldn't complain if the remote would cost $ or so. But it's $. For this much, i would expect 0 problems. I know that people say that Profoto is the best, but this product, together with the B1, are complete turkeys.

The B1s can certainly be operated as traditional radio-triggered, optically slaved, or hard-wired flashes. They can also be operated with Profoto's earlier-generation manual-only Air Remote. Used only that way, the B1s are much overpriced.

With the Air Remote TTL-C, however, you unlock functionalities that suddenly make the B1 flashes extraordinary:
                            1. Ability to shoot TTL
                            2. Ability to shoot TTL with individual flash exposure compensation on each channel.
                            3. Ability to transform workflow, by making an initial TTL shot followed by switching to manual, with the TTL setting pre-loaded as the initial manual values.
                            4. Ability to adjust flash power from a distance (without touching the flash).
                            5. Ability to control individual flash modeling lights on or off, or control their power level if set to proportional.
                            6. Ability to turn individual flash heads on and off, without touching them.
                            7. Ability to switch flash between first and second shutter sync.

Let me emphasize #3 above. You take an initial shot with TTL, and the flash decides how much power is appropriate. Let's say for discussion that the system selected power level 6.5 on the flash for that initial TTL exposure. If you then switch to manual on the Air Remote, the flash remembers that power setting and your default manual exposure will be at 6.5. You can then add or subtract power as you wish. I find myself using the one-TTL-shot-then-switch-to-manual as a default workflow in difficult lighting situations (the TTL alone actually works pretty well, but I often shoot in high-contrast locations and like to use manual). My flash meter hasn't come out of its case in a month.

AAA Battery life is good, range is good, sync reliability is outstanding. More reliable syncing, easier to use, far more durable and altogether preferable to using PocketWizard Flex/Mini TTL triggering, which is the nearest thing to this TTL feature.

Construction feels a bit flimsy but I can't say I've had any real problems yet across thousands of shots on multiple professional shoots. Sync failure is far less than 1%, probably on the order of 1 in 1000 shots. The Air Remote TTL-C gives fair warning when the AAA batteries are low. The unit can control three zones of flashes independently, and can be configured on different channels to avoid interference. Clicking a button adjusts flash power by 0.1 stops; holding the button adjusts power by 1 stop. The display is lovely and quite readable until it shuts down to save power. Not so readable in the dark. I'd like a firmware update to extend the display-on time to my preference.

On the downside, the button design is a little cheap for the price range. It's too easy to shift by 1 stop when you wanted 0.1 stop. The buttons are small. Pushing a button seven times to add 2/3 stop (0.67) is error-prone. The system operates in a relative or differential sense (add or subtract power from current setting, not set-power-to-an-absolute-value) so it can be easy to forget where you are. You'll only know energy output for sure if you look at the back of the flash to see the 0.0-10.0 power level. The Air Remote TTL-C display shuts off more quickly than I'd like. I agree with what Ricky said on March 5, good ergonomics with room for better, and one hopes there will a firmware update to address some of these little annoyances. Future HSS support has been hinted at by Profoto, and I will be delighted if the teased firmware update delivers it. And the storage bag is obviously not designed for the Air Remote, it's an oversized sack. I keep my Air Remote TTL-C in an extra pocket of the very nice B1 carry bag.

If you have trouble justifying the price, think of it as a replacement for a flash meter, which is in a similar price range and which you will probably no longer use much because of the new workflow possible with the B1/TTL-C system (shoot one shot TTL, then if needed switch to manual, then tweak from there). Yes, there are times when you might pull out a flash meter, but honestly I'm not using mine any more.

Note also that the Air Remote TTL-C won't trigger any non-Profoto brands of flashes. You'll have to trigger those optically, or buy expensive Profoto radio receivers for those other flashes and operate them manually if you want to trigger them from the Air Remote TTL-C.

Comments about Profoto Air Remote TTL-C for B1 Air (Canon E-TTL):

Works as described. The only reason I knocked this down a star to 4 is because the connection to my hot shoe on the 5D Mark III is a little too stiff. I would rather it be tight, but it's on the verge of being a bit too tight and a little difficult to attach on the fly.

Nikon users, hang in there. I hope this is available for you soon because it is so awesome to have TTL with such powerful lights and great modifiers!

Comments about Profoto Air Remote TTL-C for B1 Air (Canon E-TTL):

This little Air Remote TTL-C does exactly what it was designed to do. However, there is plenty of room for improvement.
The unit feels like it is made from thin plastic - not a strong, durable feel at all. The metal base was an extremely tight fit on and off of my 5D3. Considering the super tight fitting base in conjunction with the "cheap" plastic construction, I feel like I have to be very carful when mounting or dismounting it from my camera so as not to break the unit from its base.
The screen is beautiful, but the buttons don't light up so you will have to memorize them if working in low light. The little buttons on the right are too small and also feel extremely cheap.
Lastly, it uses AAA batteries when most everything else seems to use AA batteries. Not a huge deal.
Those were my criticisms of this unit. They particularly stand out when considering the high cost of the unit.
All things considered, if you want to work TTL with the B1s then you must have this unit and that alone makes dealing with all the little problems mentioned above no big deal.
Profoto's lighting system and particularly the B1s are wonderful. This necessary little trigger is just the weak link from a quality standpoint.

Comments about Profoto Air Remote TTL-C for B1 Air (Canon E-TTL):

I've had a couple weeks now to test this remote. It's amazing for the most part, pretty straight forward, easy to use and common with Profoto equipment beautifully contracted. The things I don't love about it are as follows. NO HIGH SPEED SYNC: The lack of a high speed sync function makes this unit more difficult to nail those fast action shots. There are workarounds but not as easy to dial in as the Canon 600EX for high speed shooting. ENERGY CHANGES: the remote changes the energy in relationship to where it is currently by indicating a +/-. i.e., +1.0, +1.2 or -2.3, etc. Instead, I would have preferred that it have me the actual power value on the strobe, i.e. 7.0, 4.5, 2.0, etc. Everything is pretty straight forward, easy to select group and channel, Mode changes from TTL to Manual, and Curtain sync priority from first to second curtain. Almost a five star rating. I believe that with enough demand Profoto could write a firmware update to change the ENERGY OUTPUT readout, but not sure if the hardware would support any high sync functionality. I like to believe they thought that through already?
