Why Nikon?
Simply saying I like Nikon. It may be funny, but as to me, Nikon brand is like Stradivari brand for violins.
I have several generation Nikon cameras from FE10 to F65 and therefore several lenses equipped with Nikon mount.
Why this model?
It seems to me to be a gold milestone between digital and film cameras. Quick response like film cameras completed with sophisticated automatic features. From another side, full frame cameras are too expensive for me because I earn money mostly by another way, I'm not a professional.
The main reason of choosing this model is resolution specifications of the most photo stocks. My proved Olympus SP-350 don't meet these requirements by a little piece.
There are several attempts to try my new Nikon D5300 with previous lenses.
It is possible to use the Zoom-Nikkor 35-70 with Nikon D5300 (5300+3570) but only for taking still pictures like this one (#3570_01) because difficulties with exposure control (manual try-shot-check-try type) and sharpness control problem (I checked the main subject sharpness at camera monitor).
Another turn of testing was the set of Nikon D5300 with AF Zoom- Nikkor 28-200. It was not bad idea because greater focal length of this lens mounted at DX-format camera. It was not good idea because lack of automatic sharpness control in this option. But a combination of Nikon D5300 + AF Zoom- Nikkor 28-200 is alive and useful for taking still pictures (#28200_01), architect details (#28200_04) and perfect for landscapes (##28200_02, 28200_03). This lens can serve as auxiliary long focal lens because format transition from full-frame to DX cameras.
The great feature of Nikon D5300 consists of traditional optic viewfinder and folded display. In some cases, for example, occasional shots in the streets and public places takes a few seconds and do not pull attention of surrounding people, comparing with contemporary manner to take pictures viewing at the camera display. However such manner requires some training of photographer.
The choice of lens is defined mostly by photographer style, I mean. Thus I prefer AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140 lens which completely fit my behavior as photographer. By the way, I was pleasured with wider angle of AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140 comparing with this one of AF Zoom- Nikkor 28-200 attached to the full-frame camera, 76 degrees vs 74 degrees. There are several pictures made within full range of focal length (18 mm: ##18140_02, 18140_04, 18140_06, 20 mm: #18140_03, 24 mm: #18140_07, 27 mm: # 18140_09, 66 mm: #18140_01, 90 mm: # 18140_05, 140 mm: # 18140_08) and under various lighting conditions.
Also I like a GPS option, it is handy in most situation.
The Nikon D5300+ AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140 provides me all opportunities for enjoying with photography!

I purchased the Nikon D5300 for my B-Day in December 2013 from BH Photo. The Auto Focus will only work in live liew and not through the view finder. I have shot less than 50 pictures. Today, I contacted Nikon USA regarding the issue. They want me to send back the body for service. I am a little disappointed in the product. I know that it is not the lens because I purchased the same camera for my spouse at that time. That camera is working fine with all of our lenses at this point. I now have to pay the shipping cost and insurance cost for this defective product. I will be caution about further purchases from Nikon. I am giving this product 3 star because of the focusing issue.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I bought my first SLR (Pentax film) camera in 1972 used this brand until 1995 when getting film processed became difficult. I gave up on D SLR cameras because they were so expensive. Then I discovered the Nikon D3300 and loved it. So I became a SLR fan again, but I wanted more. B&H advertised the D5300 with built-in WiFi and GPS and I was hooked. This is an outstanding camera and I have only scratched the surface of what it can do. B&H is a fantastic photo company to deal with. Fast and courteous.

Bought this for my wife to get her into photography, it is a light well built camera. I use a D610 and a D750, was very impressed with this little shooter. She loves the color and is slowly working her way into all the setting and controls. I just wish it had a front command dial.

      Nikon D5300

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I bought this a few weeks ago with a prime 35mm lens. It's my first DSLR and is AWESOME. It seemed like the best option in my price range, but I'm convinced it's a great option overall, short of a full frame. I've used it for a few gigs (club nights) in low light with a speedlight at its lowest power) and it's been nothing but great. The wifi function was definitely a partial factor for buying this, but I admit I haven't had a chance to try that out yet. It's comfortable even though I have big hands. I wish I had more to say but it's just all around really great. If you're thinking about it, try it out. You'll like it.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I had a d3000, yes, I know, very old but I was still learning a few things with it, until I reached a point where I couldn't do certain things because it just didn't have the ability to, even properly exposed images (I shoot manual and raw), an image with ISO above 400 had terrible noise, and many other quirks, it was a much older camera... anyways, I just shoot for myself and family, mostly portraits, I would say 99% portraits, I am desperatly trying to learn and improve what I have learned in lifestyle photography, it' what makes my heart sing (I have a 4yo), so I really dind't have a big budget for an expensive camera, I wanted the D7100 and I found many reasons to justify $ more, until this one went on sale and I decided to give it a try and I am so glad I did! For under $ I got an amazing camera, the quality of the images is breathtaking, I am really, really in love with it. I was disappointed to find out the video has a time limit, which I had no idea, because my d3000 doens't have video capabilities, and then I did a lot of research and found out that companies have to pay higher taxes on cameras with unlimited video recording, anyways, it was a little bummer, but nothing to make me rethink not keeping this camera. I pair it with my beloved 35mm 1.8, and I deeply love this camera. So for the price and what it does, I truly coulnd't be happier! It was also my first purchase at B.H. Photo and I was very pleased with my expirience, lightining fast shipping, products were extremely well packed, and I had no problems with anything AT ALL.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

Bought the D5300 as an anniversary-present upgrade to my wife's D5100, which was getty a little squirrely from too many miles, bumps and bruises. The larger number of AF points, slightly bigger LCD, and a couple of control tweaks seem to be her favorite things at this point. The increase in resolution, and the loss of the low-pass filter, have provided a nice bump in sharpness, and the fact that she didn't have to learn a whole new control layout is a big plus.

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I am just getting into photography, and I wanted something that I could grow into and learn with for at least a few years (assuming I get better). This camera comes with everything and more a beginner could need. The quality is amazing and it's very easy to use. Once you know what the settings are (or changing things yourself), you can tweak things as you like quickly. I didn't know I could shoot 1080 ppi, 60 fps video with this, so that was a huuuge bonus for me. The videos are beautiful too, I've captured a friend doing skateboarding tricks and the video makes you feel like you're right there watching. I mainly use this for outdoor photos in nature, and those photos come out really well. I'd recommend shooting in HDR if there's a drastic difference in lighting (i.e. shooting a tree in the shade, and also wanting to capture the clear sky behind it) -- but you pros already knew that. For indoor pictures, things get a little tricky: sometimes the automatic setting uses too long of a shutter release, so the image comes out a bit blurry; and changing things to how you need them to capture the right moment with the right exposure may take a while (or maybe I'm just really slow). The Nikon D5300 comes with a large range of options to choose from in terms of exposure, as well as dials which control the aperture and shutter timer -- all of which is really straightforward, and easy to use. The pictures come out beautifully without any editing. I would definitely recommend this camera.

Good easy beginner camera. It's amazing to me how fast the technology changes. The better models cost more and are worth the extra money. Can't make the automatic settings work well for video. Wish I had spent more money and gotten a better camera. But, it's light weight, good video image and integrates well with other devices.

                My new best friend

                from Brooklyn

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

I love my new camera. I've been a long-time Nikon user. Intermediate level hobbiest. This camera is easy to use if you sit down with the manual for 30 minutes. I suggest spending time to learn all the features.
The wifi isn't straight forward. You have to sync the camera and the phone together. You don't sync the camera to a wifi network.
I haven't experimented with the GPS yet.
Overall, the camera is an affordable option for someone who takes pictures at the hobby-level. Excellent quality photos with easy to use interface. So much fun to play with my new camera!

Comments about D5300 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Black):

that's a great DSLR because he's very practical (need only one hand to use, small body, easy to tidy up,...). he's very brilliant (pictures are great even in the dark, he's powerful and not so expensive) the cons: the live-view is not great to make the focus, and he's a little bit noisy but that's a NIKON!!!
P.S: I'm not english but I hope the message is comprehensive

Nice menu system and ease of use. As an initial assessment it takes great pictures. I use it for taking pictures of our son.
