I now use this mic every time I shoot. I is leaps and bounds better than the on camera mic but I do get a hiss or a hum from it occasionally. I use it on my Canon 60D. It works fine with the Canon firmware but if you are running Magic Lantern firmware you need to go into the Magic Lantern audio settings and boost the DB gain for it to power the microphone.

If you attach a cable extension you can use the mic as a boom mic to get it closer to the sound you need recorded (i.e. sound for a scene, interviews, etc.) It is a great cost effective way to elevate your audio for production.

My 4 stars is because of the audio hiss that I sometimes get. This may be caused by the connection on my camera or the cable, but I have not gotten the chance to full test those options and it has not been a huge issue for me to really need to investigate it that thoroughly yet.

I use this with my Canon 70D. It is definitely better than the built-in mic but it's not perfect. I mostly use the 17-55MM f2.8 IS USM lens with this camera and the built-in mic picks up focusing motor noise quite a lot. Using this mic eliminates most of it but not all. A very quiet scene, especially indoors, can cause the noise to be picked up even with this mic. Also, be aware that if you leave the mic attached to the hot shoe, the flash can not be activated for still pix, at least on this camera. Otherwise I like the mic. It's light, doesn't need a separate battery, pops on and off quickly and has good (in my opinion) sound quality. If you want to completely eliminate focus motor noise though, you need to use manual focus or get a boom mic.

Comments about Rode VideoMic GO Lightweight On-Camera Microphone:

This little microphone is great for capturing sound directly to your camera's card.
Light weight, fits in the canon hot shoe, makes for a very portable shooting rig. Great little mic for the price.
The only downside is if you are not using a batter pack for your DLSR camera you will need to change the camera battery more often as it get's its power from the camera itself.

I appreciate an affordable shotgun mic! The sound quality is decent, especially when you edit a bit of background noise out in post. It's also incredibly lightweight - i.e., perfect for on the go usage.

The instructions on the website state very clearly that this microphone does not have batteries, and so it draws on power from the camera in order to work. Be sure that the camera you intend to use this with will provide power to it, or it won't work. If your camera does not provide power, then by a microphone that has batteries.

Super light weight, and no batteries!! Even without a special wind screen you will notice the audio quality is so much better outdoors than using the in-camera mic!! I use it on the Canon T5i - you will notice Rebel owners all over using the VideoMic Go, if you have a much more expensive camera, there's a good chance you will want higher quality audio and have the money to do so. There's no question this is a significant upgrade no matter what kind of videography you do!

I use this on my Sony A57 so I had to purchase a pricey adapter. The quality of the audio sounds fairly decent in contrast to the on board microphone on my DSLR. On my Sony DSLR, there are no audio settings so sometimes the audio seems to loud. I'm not sure how to fix this.

                          Would recommend!
