I've had one of these for several years and it's my workhorse small LED. Phenomenally bright in both daylight and tungsten. Since the LEDs are very large though, you get a funky multi-edge on the shadow and the quality is a little harsh. Both of these problems are totally solved by putting an Airbox Macro Inflatable softbox (sold at B&H) on it- gives you a nice soft source that's controllable, since its only one source, but still bright since this little light has so much oomph.
I attached an image showing the shadows cast by this light both with and without the softbox on it.
Being so bright, this light can take a lot of diffusion to get nice and soft.
I wish the construction was metal. One part of it got flaky on me, but the manufacturer fixed it for me.

Great when they work - unreliable.

Honestly I love these lights. When they work.

The quality of light is superb, although they're very pricey they are worth it for the battery life etc.

Honestly I love these lights. When they work.

The quality of light is superb, although they're very pricey they are worth it for the battery life etc.

The problem is in the dimmers which apparently are very unreliable. I bought 2 of these and had immediate issues in the first couple weeks of the tungsten or 5400k ends of the light shorting out so that I could only use one of them (ie tungsten works but daylight doesn't work at all and vice versa)

Send them in to Switronix (you pay shipping AND duty to do so) and they fixed em for free - only the problems started again a week after I received them.

I've bought 2 more of these lights - yet to see if they have the same issues, but just be aware there is definitely a problem in the design somewhere.

Great Light.

Comments about Switronix TorchLED Bolt 220W On-Camera Light:

For video, stills, mixed color temp situations, and exterior daylight fill in a portable, battery-ready package, the TorchLED 220 delivers on so many levels. First off, it's powerful enough to be used as daylight fill. That's impressive. It's simple to operate, and once your color temp is mixed, it holds true while dimming. That's very impressive. Bundled with the Switronix Battery Kit, the TorchLED 220 is good to go. As for the Cons mentioned in other reviews, I heeded the advice and bought a better (and extremely affordable) ball mount. I also paired the light up with an Airbox Macro Velvet Softbox Kit for soft diffusion and a wider throw. You will definitely want to think about diffusion. The light is that bright. The unit comes with a plastic milky diffusion insert, which really helps, but it's just not enough, in my opinion, to get the most out of this light. I'm really enjoying the versatility of this unit. It's a bit weighty when compared to smaller, less powerful LEDs. It could be mounted on a camera or a rig but it's no featherweight. That's something to consider if that's your primary need. You might think 'light stand' for longer shoots. I can say that on a recent exterior shoot I handheld the unit without a second thought. No problem. No heat to deal with. And by using both the Airbox and the TorchLED's diffusion insert, the light was soft and the result was terrific. I really liked it.

Comments about Switronix TorchLED Bolt 220W On-Camera Light:

The Best LED light out there yet...For the price which is a little more expensive than regular led lights this light is the winner. First of all the led bulbs are high quality and give accurate color temperatures. And second of all the throw distance is very long. The light never gets hot. The only problem is that the light is a little delicate, the knobs that control the temperature and intensity might break if pulled too hard, also the connector that attaches the light to the camera with adapter might break id turned to hard. So just be careful not to use a lot force.

Comments about Switronix TorchLED Bolt 220W On-Camera Light:

The light itself has a ton of uses that make it perfect for any lighting kit. I almost never use as an on-camera light but rather as a small unit in my kit to replace my old 200w tungsten lights. They are very bright, and the color is quite good. Perhaps the smallest hint of a magenta tint in comparison to actual HMI's, but that's hardly noticable at all. Love the battery power, I've found that they can indeed last 2+ hours as Switronix says. I can stick them in small nooks and spaces quickly without running a stinger to put a small splash of light wherever I want in the frame and match whatever color temp needed, or I can quickly use it as a small fill where needed. The flexibility of this light is really nice to have. That being said, it has no yolk or baby pin receiver, so using it as you would a traditional instrument is difficult right off the bat. To mount to a stand or some kind of baby pin and be able to pan and tilt anywhere, I've found a very good solution. Here's what you need, all easily purchasable at BH and inexpensive. See picture as well:1x - Matthews Minigrip head - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/283851-REG/Matthews_350584_Minigrip_Head.html1x - Matthews 4" rod for MICROgrip - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/686707-REG/Matthews_350602_5_4_101mm_Rod_for.htmlSimply screw the rod into the light and mount it into the 3/8" receiver on the minigrip head, then mount to a standard baby pin and you're good to go. Plus, the head and rod are quite handy to have in your kit in general, when not using this light.

I purchased on the advise of the salesperson and am very happy. Very wide evenly spread lighting. The dimmer is a real plus. Most impressive is the ability to adjust the color balance. I likely will never purchase another video light that does not have this as an option.

Doesn't heat up and last for a while. Best part is it gives the natural light you are looking for. No green tint like those cheap 100 dollar LED. Dimmer and diffuser is only a plus. And the temperature change is this LED going whole 9 yards. Bought another one and planning to buy a few more. I use this for weddings!

This is a great all round toplight for ENG situations, with its bicolour flexibility.
My only criticism would be one similar to most top led lights is that the mounting of the screw thread should be reinforced further to handle frequent movement. Otherwise it is a great light.

The fact that this unit lets me control brightness and color temperature while on the move is invaluable. It is extremely bright for its size but a tad on the bulky side. I don't really trust it on a ball mount, especially when the battery is attached. The setup is fine for static cameras but constant movement can cause the ball to slip a little. Once this light is stabilized properly it's a tank. Its weight is a good thing but only if its mounted securely. Great product and not overly price for what it can do.

I have just started using it and find that it does supply a good amount of light. I plan on using it for video interviews and fill for some stills. I like being able to put it on light stand and place it where needed. On the Nikon D 800 it is a bit heavy and even more so on the D 3 I also shoot with. Although it is not unmanageable. I also like having a diffusion cover for it. I am sure it will also work for table top lighting. I amy do another review after more use.

My assistant videographer bought this and i had to have it. We worked in a dim-lighted area during a wedding reception and with just his light on saved the day during special events. Great light balance too!
looking forward to using it at my next outdoor wedding.
